If this game had let me actually live and exist in the city instead of funneling me through the levels then it would probably be one of my favorites this generation. I'm definitely going to try the DLC but reading online its frustrating to find out that the DLC is probably side missions originally intended for Vito that have been repurposed.

Infact the amount of content cut from this game appears to be huge. Everything from trains to side missions. Like BlueNGold I'm looking for impressions of the DLC, is it worth it guys? I've heard that they feature pretty thin text based briefings?
Definitely agree. I just got the game a couple days ago. I'm at Chapter 7 or 8 I think so I'm about halfway done and so far I love it. I just wish it was more opened up, instead of continuing through the chapters like you were saying.

Where did you hear about all this content being cut? I didn't even know that.

Why remove all that stuff? Disc space? I loved Mafia II, but seeing all that pisses me off a little.

          Re: Mafia II (PS3/360)

I rented this on 360 and beat it. Recently downloaded the demo from Steam for my PC and fell in love again. I really wanted to keep the game the first time around for 360, but didn't. Now that I can buy it for $12.50 on Amazon I am really considering buying it. I just can't decide. If I buy it for PC then...

          + It looks much better
          + Plays smoother
          - Won't be able to log into XBL while playing it(unless it is a game for windows correct?)

What do you guys think? Go for it or not?

My guess is time constraints came into play as well. Some of it probably wasn't working right or whatever and it probably was easier to cut it to get the game out on time instead.

Yep I bet the publisher probably came in at some point and told them to get the game finished and ready for release, so sacrifices had to be made. I love it for what it is but feel that it could have been so much more.

Canes I would definitely grab the PC version if you have the gear to run it. There is no multiplayer so Xbox Live doesn't really matter. I'm sure those opening winter levels look absolutely gobsmackingly beautiful at a maxed out resolution and frame rate. Sadly I don't have a gaming PC but the 360 version was more than ok for my purposes.

The only reason I want it for 360 is so I can be playing it and be in a party chat, but my 360 and PC are 3 feet away so I can still sit here on my PC while in a party chat. I think I am going to buy it. $12.50 for a better looking version of what I already played is a great deal.

I'm having the same dilemma myself. I really liked the game, but as I do with many action type games, I sold it on ebay once I blew through the story.

I think I could definitely get my 12.50's worth if I go with that Amazon deal. I think I even have a Amazon gift card that someone bought me for Christmas...

I think I've convinced myself. I'm going to buy it again.

                    Re: Mafia II (PS3/360)

I beat the game just now. It took me 12 hours so it wasn't long, but it wasn't short enough to make me dissatisfied. They definitely could have stretched out the story by doing things like letting us play through Vito's younger years when him and Joe were just a couple young kids on the street and also the part where....
                    Spoiler
could of had some missions to it as well. The story really picked up in the 2nd half of the game though and the ending was pretty solid.

I really, really hope there is a Mafia III. I don't know how well the game sold but a third game could be what I thought this game was originally going to be, which was a little more open and fully-fleshed out because it was kind of disappointing there were no side missions and like Guffers said, we were being funneled through the chapters/levels for the most part so that was also disappointing, but once I got into the story I dealt with it.

This game was just so detailed and well done that I would find it hard to believe if 2K wasn't working on Mafia III. If they are working on it, there's a ton of things I want to see. I want to be able to buy properties like Vice City/San Andreas, I want much more customization over how Vito looks (clothes, hair, maybe even build like SA did), car dealerships, true side missions and more.

But overall this was a really solid game. Definitely worth the purchase. Not sure if I'm going to take a look at the DLC or not -- I'll probably Google some impressions of both -- but I had a good time with this. There was a ton of potential that was left off to the side, but I have my fingers crossed there is a third game on the way.

I don't need more Vito customization. Black suit, white shirt, black tie, fedora is the classiest way possible to kill other people. Dressing in anything but that would be uncivilized.

Lol @ Dayman, I would have liked some more clothes. Only really because going into the clothing stores was one of the few things you could actually do outside of the main story. I would have liked each store to sell a different range and style of clothes, similar to what you could do in GTA IV.

I'm glad you enjoyed the story BlueNGold, I loved it as well. Some people have complained that it went off the deep end a little in the final few chapters but personally I thought the escalation of the problems was handled ok. I would have liked a slower burn and build up to it though. eg. Like you said it would have been the perfect chance for them to add in some side missions related to the drug dealing. It would have been nice to see them build a little drug empire before the inevitable.
Still, a great game in a beautifully realised world.

I just would have preferred if there was more than just a few different colored shirts that looked the same, the suit w/raincoat, leather jacket and suit w/ fedora.

Since they already had such a great customizing feature with the cars, I figured the clothes were going to be similar but they weren't.

I didn't think it went off the deep end at all. I thought the escalation of problems was pretty good also. The one thing story-wise that disappointed me was that it felt like they didn't go deep enough into how each family operates, the differences, and the characters in each family. The first Godfather game did this really well, but with this game I didn't feel it was as good.

The most disappointing thing to me out of all of this was the fact that it seems like they released an unfinished game. I know I keep using the word "disappointing" even though I enjoyed the game, but I just finally looked through those links you posted (I wanted to wait until I beat the game) and they left so much out.

Looking at things like gun licenses, jobs, races, melee weapons and a better melee system in general, and all the missions they left out is aggravating. I wish they would have just taken their time making the full game they originally intended on making because what I just played was so close to being such a classic game and possibly better than GTA IV, but it fell short.

But like I said a few minutes ago, hopefully they are working on a third game. Now that the second game has already been released and they have the bulk of the work done and most of the features and the city itself implemented, all they really have to do is continue the story from where they left off here and fully finish all of those things they left out.

Awesome point regarding the development of the families. That would have been a great way to deepen the story. They could have tied the different families to different regions in the city and used that to further flesh out the story. Anyway it's just ticked over to midnight here so happy new year guys!
