Re: L.A. Noire (PS3/360)
I thought this was a neat touch, could be absolutely nothing but it's my interpitation...(don't read unless you're up to at least the first vice case)
SpoilerIt turns out the temp bartender did it. When going over the scenes I couldn't help but notice nearly all of them had a random $5 bill laying around, always said it was irrelevant when I picked them up. After finding out it was a bartender I figured they were left as you'd leave a tip.Comment

Re: L.A. Noire (PS3/360)
My thoughts on Cole Phelps, dont read if youre not in Arson yet (beware of other spoilers):
SpoilerIMO Cole Phelps is one of rockstars weakest main protagonists. As much as they tried to give him character and personality, it just fell flat for me. He starts out looking after himself, disregarding his squadron/partner and doesn't evolve too much from there at all. He spends the entire game on a high horse. And then in a weak attempt to give him another dimension, they randomly make him an adulterer, which apparently was a crime back then? That blindsided me. Did I miss something there? They never showed Cole's family or his family life. Were we suppose to know his family life was on the rocks? His adultery was most definitely a plot device to demote him, it was painfully obvious.
Kind of spoiler, but you could assume this by now:
SpoilerRockstar did themselves and Cole a great disservice by leaving his family out of the story. Where you have Nico, Louis, and especially Marston who all have ties to their families throughout their storyline, Cole has one scene where his wife leaves him, and a shot of a photo of his daughters. We dont even get to see the development of his relationship with his mistress, just a random time lapse and they're in love?
Significant Spoiler Dont read unless youre done with the game:
Spoiler
Then the game marginalizes Cole as a character again when they give you a significant amount of gameplay as John Kelso, insurance investigator. In the short time playing as John, I was hooked to him as a character and personality. They gave us too much time with him, by the end, I was wishing the story were more about him rather than Cole.
Phenomenal game, but the character of Cole Phelps was weak in my opinion. No character development at all. One selfish SOB from the start to the end (minus one very random act of selfishness at the end).SpoilerHis family didn't really matter to the story. So we would have gotten a few cut scenes of his wife being angry and his kids being sad? That's played out. I thought the whole military thing was riveting and tied everything together quite nicely at the end. All the holes were filled for me and it did a good job of explaining why people treated him the way they did through the story.
My gripe with the ending of the game is that you basically turn into a movie-goer. You spend almost the entire game having to pay attention to every little detail and take your time, then at the end, it essentially turns into a horizontal scroll adventure game. I was all ready to take down the damn fat cats!
One great thing about the end of the game. FLAMETHROWER!!! Bwahahahaha!Last edited by ImTellinTim; 05-20-2011, 02:48 PM.Comment

Re: L.A. Noire (PS3/360)
Then again I am only up to being an arson dic. now.SpoilerI am surprised Cole doesn't really talk about fam. life. Noticing the wedding band right off the bat, thought the fam. would have more of a role in the game.NFL - Dallas Cowboys, MLB - NY Yankees
NBA - Knicks, NHL - NY Rangers,
NCAABB - St. Johns Redmen (Redstorm)Comment

Re: L.A. Noire (PS3/360)
Yeah I had noticed that too, I was surprised it that Cole had never commented on them whenever I picked them up.I thought this was a neat touch, could be absolutely nothing but it's my interpitation...(don't read unless you're up to at least the first vice case)

Speaking of Cole
SpoilerI liked the character but I agree with the guy who said that they should've talked about his family a lot more. It was mentioned a few times when driving (he yelled at his homicide partner about talking bad about his wife and talked about his family a couple other times) but the whole cheating thing didn't have that much weight because we saw the family once and that was only after he had gotten caught. You don't have to show them being sad but there should have been something more than just mentioning them in passing while driving.Originally posted by BlzerLet me assure you that I am a huge proponent of size, and it greatly matters. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.
If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment

Again, folks who arent at the endgame, stay awaySpoilerHis family didn't really matter to the story. So we would have gotten a few cut scenes of his wife being angry and his kids being sad? SpoilerYeah I hear you about the family, but his adultery was a major part of the storyline and seemed totally unfounded when it happened. Had his family been a legitimate part of the game, I may have had an emotional feeling against or for Cole, but I just felt...slapped? So by the end when Cole got washed, I really didnt care any which way. In RDR I was pissed, I restarted like 3 times, I tried to save him because I cared. I didnt care for Cole after 15 hours and cared about John after 3. R* probably planned to release DLC for John. Everything about Cole felt forced. After you learn the character after 6 or 7 hours that's what you get out of him and then hes just ehh.
That said, the story was fantastic. So many directions, so many cases it was/is fantastic. Loose ends were tied up well even though Im not very clear on the intentions of the flame criminal form Cole's squadron. He went crazy and burned down houses? Thats it. I did like how they played the drug angle, insurance angle, new development angle and more to lead you away from the truth that Cole created the monster.
The DLC potential for this game is fantastic though. You can continue on with John Kelso, bring in a new detective, use a old detective (probably not), bring in an undercover detective going into the crime world, be a criminal, or just make up new cases with Cole (GOD PLEASE NO).
Anyway, the moral of the story, I dont like Cole Phelps. I didnt like Nico or Johnny from GTA IV either but I cared about them. I loved Louis and John Marston, Carl Johnson, Tommy Vercetti, but dammit I lost all care for Cole. He was boringComment

Are the first 3 cases supposed to act as some sort of tutorial? There was no investigating to do at all.Comment
