"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Mass Effect gets GOTY from TeamXbox
Out of all the awards, this one (perhaps not surprisingly) saw the widest range of votes. CoD4, The Orange Box and BioShock all got some love, but the first next-gen epic from BioWare ended up walking away with the title. Detractors might point to the bugs and graphical glitches that pop up, but it’s impossible to deny the fact that this one’s a role-playing masterpiece. It’s got plenty of what we’ve come to expect from a BioWare game, including extended dialogue sequences, a built-in moral compass that alters the game based on your right or wrong decisions, and some of the hottest aliens we’ve ever seen.
What’s most impressive about the game is the fact that it was able to draw in gamers that don’t consider themselves fans of the RPG genre. Our very own Brent Soboleski wasn’t really looking forward to the game that much, but the ability to play the game however he wanted quickly changed his mind. If you want, you can make your way through the galaxy blasting everything in sight with pistols, shotguns or assault rifles, or you can rely on your biotics and save the ammunition for your teammates. It helped make the game so much more than a traditional RPG, blending equal parts role-playing and action.
With the recent announcement that a sequel is definitely on the way (along with some DLC to tide us over until then), we’re happy with the knowledge that we’ll be able to see what awaits Commander Shepard in the future.
Story and characters aren’t everything, but these components of narrative have always been the weakest part of video games. For decades games have made up in frenetic action what they have lacked in dramatic depth. And that is a big reason why games have traditionally appealed most strongly to the demographic group that most enjoys frenetic action: young men. In its choice of milieu — science fiction — Mass Effect is not ambitious at all. But with its focus on character development, personal growth and moral tension, all fueled by a graphics system created to evoke emotional empathy, Mass Effect points the way forward. It may be a harbinger of a time when story and character are as important to video games as explosions.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

Re: Mass Effect Discussion
Probably not as far as some of you guys as I sometimes do not get a chance to play as often as I would like. Still loving the game though. One of the best I have ever played. Need some help though.
SpoilerHow do you beat Benezia? I get down to where she is the only one left, but I can't inflict any damage on her, or so it seems. Any tips on how to beat her? Thanks!Comment

You can't inflict any damage on her at first. Just worry about her minions and don't be afraid to run around. You'll have your shot at her, but for now, just worry about her minions.PSN: JISTIC_OS

SpoilerThanks bro! Maybe I do need to run around a bit. I'll bet more of her minions come out if I get to other areas of the room. I will try that out.Comment

Re: Mass Effect Discussion
I don;t know how to use the spoiler thing everyone else is using so I am just going to ask. For anyone else reading this could be a possible spoiler.
SpoilerIne the mission Virmire, when Wrex is acting all pissy in the begining and Sheppard goes over to talk to him. It gave me the option to shoot him. I kinda thought about doing it but, i didn't. Did anyone shoot him or would I have really shot him if I had picked it?Last edited by fishepa; 12-22-2007, 01:53 PM.Comment

yeah, if you choose to shoot him, then you really do kill him. I tried it just to see, but then quickly reloaded since he was one of my favorite characters.Comment

It has it's flaws, but the positives definitely far outweigh those flaws.Comment
