That's how I'll raise my kids if/when I have them. Once I got to about 11 or 12, I could more or less watch whatever movies I wanted, as long as my mother knew what was in them and was fine with it. I remember it was a big deal buying my first "parental advisory" CD (Country Grammar by Nelly in 2000, when I was 10), and I had to look through the lyrics beforehand with my Mom to make sure they were okay.
It was all downhill from there for me.
