    Re: Red Dead Redemption

This is a post from someone who claims to be a R* employee in response to the Wives Letter.
It's from the internet so it's gotta be true!

Anyway, if this guys isn't whistling Dixie, it appears the game could still be good:

We're producing a fantastic game right now, but in times past, it seemed to have little in the way of direction or conception. If it did indeed have these attributes, they were largely lost upon the majority of the development team, and many of us had little knowledge of what kind of product we were actually trying to put out there. I think we all do now, but it's in no thanks at all to any concerted effort whatsoever to actively motivate the team and evangelize the product to the developers themselves. I do believe that many of us didn't see how what we were doing could be important when we didn't really know what kind of game we're supposed to be making. Ultimately, I think we've all sort of "figured it out" and things started falling into place, but at the same time, I think this collective realization has put the pressure on all of us, management included, that we really need to nail this thing and get it out on shelves on time.
But if you read more of this guys post it pretty much confirms that Rockstar San Diego is a mess filled with a bunch of producers that have no clue what's going on - or care for that matter.

To be fair, this is what we all assume is going on elsewhere, it just isnt publicized like this has been. I mean, look at Madden, you think from 06-09 things were going smooth over there? Look at some of these other games that have come out and we have been like who the heck made this garbage. This generations seems to have taken its toll on the industry and not for the better. Lets face it, all we care about is the end result, thats all I really care about with this game. the premise is awesome, hopefully it can deliver elsewhere.

Same here man. Back a long time ago in one of those "if you could make one game, what would it be?" threads, my answer was pretty much exactly what R* has created in Red Dead Redemption. I've been crazy hyped for it for a while now, and now, a few months before release, there is a chance it might have some major problems. I'll go nuts if this doesn't turn out well, as i've been waiting a LONG time for a good open world western.

Yep, we shared the same sentiment in that thread as we do here. I can't wait. This is my dream game. I LOVED gun... I just hope that it's Gun on steriods, GTA level.

Yeah, Gun was the shiz. I played it nonstop until I beat it, taking time to just ride around the wilderness as well. It didn't have much in terms of a huge variety of things to do, but it put the idea in my head that an amazing western based game could be made in a similar style. Hopefully Red Dead is just that.

I find it hard to believe that a game that has the potential to sell GTA4 type numbers would be completely mismanaged as if it wasn't an important game.

                Baffling if true.

Well Hank, if this game is even a smidge better than GUN..........I will be in heaven. GUN was great, just needed variety and was too barren. We shall see what comes about.

I agree. I loved GUN and like many have pointed out, if it's even half as deep as GTA I'll be in Heaven.

I just hate hearing this stuff so close to release.
I'm a huge hockey and boxing fan and yet I think I'm more stoked for this game than I was for any NHL or Fight Night game release.

To make matters worse, I just picked up The Good, The Bad and the Ugly on Blu-Ray and watched it last night. It got my Western blood worked up. I need this game now!!!

I'm still in awe of how they managed to clean it up. Amazing.

You might even come across some citizens in need of help. Red Dead Redemption is filled with randomly generated small side-quests and I came across a few during my travels. One was a girl that looked to be in the midst of a kidnapping. Another was a prostitute being bullied by a would-be client. And the last was a set of homesteaders under attack by bandits.

The gentlemanly thing to do would have been to help all of these people in need. I certainly had the guns to do it. The fun part about Red Dead Redemption is that good and evil are completely up for interpretation. I ended up siding with the bandits and killed the homesteaders before looting their bodies. The lady of the night ended up getting killed by the bully while I watched, so I blasted him in the face with a shotgun. And that women in the midst of a kidnapping? Well I killed her captor, but then left her tied up. I tossed her on the back of my horse and went for a ride
