    Re: Dead Rising 2

This is sweet news as I really enjoyed the first game, flaws and all.

I would love if they made DR2 online co-op and got rid of the timer issues already noted. That would be AMAZING.

      Dead Rising 2 Multiplayer Confirmed

Capcom has been very tight lipped about facets of Dead Rising 2, with much of the information about the zombie killing action sequel released in one press release and a few screens. We were keeping our fingers crossed that there would be something – anything – released about the upcoming game at GDC, and luckily, we managed to glean a few little nuggets from the show. During the Platform Independent Shader Development with mental mill – Making of Dead Rising 2 panel, Izmeth Siddeek, the character art lead from Blue Castle Games detailed how the development team needed to focus on creating large amount of characters that had to be lit and shaded properly, as well as a number of other design hurdles overcome with the mental mill program. Thanks to the program's shaders, the Blue Castle team was able to create unique eye and cloth shaders, as well as skin shading that looked natural and realistic that could be applied to large numbers of characters and zombies on screen at one time.

However, it was Laura Scholl, the Product Manager of mental mill, that made some of the largest bits of news out of the panel. Mentioning a conversation that she'd had with Siddeek about the use of the program, she stated that Siddeek confirmed that Dead Rising 2 will frequently track at least 800 separate clothing textures to provide the sense of unique zombies onscreen. What's more, thanks to the elements that Blue Castle are using from mental mill to quickly mass produce characters for the game engine, players could experience as many as 6000 characters onscreen during multiplayer sessions.

That last stat bears repeating for two separate reasons: first, there was no prior admission of multiplayer within Dead Rising 2, which will be a pleasant surprise for Dead Rising fans. Secondly, to face off against up to 6000 separate zombies at a time will definitely be a daunting, but thrilling prospect. Although no other details on multiplayer or the game were provided, it definitely was an exciting statement to hear. We contacted Capcom for comment, but did not receive any word as of publication of this news piece.

        Dead Rising 2 Update

Weekly Famitsu got the scoop on Chuck and more in its latest issue.

Aside from the name, little is known about the new character. However, the magazine does reveal that his profession will be connected to the gameplay somehow, similar to how Frank, a photo journalist, took pictures to build up experience. So what's Chuck's profession? That's currently being kept under wraps.

The key word for this week's update is "volume up." As in take the original Dead Rising, up the volume, and you've got Dead Rising 2. The game will retain the basic concept of the original: surviving the flood of zombies for 72 hours. You'll, of course, be able to grab all varieties of objects from your surroundings to bash in zombie brain. This is where the volume up comes into play, as the game promises more weapons and vehicles for your use. The zombies are also getting a volume up in terms of their numbers, so they won't necessarily be at a disadvantage.

One area that will be going in the reverse direction is loading. The game promises less loading thanks to updated tech. On a note relating to the loading, it appears that fallen zombie bodies will remain in place while you explore a single area. The bodies clear out only when you move beyond a loading point.

Famitsu managed to sneak in a few words with producer Keiji Inafune, who was unfortunately a bit on the shy side with specifics. He wouldn't share Chuck's precise job, although he did confirm the presence of a new form of gameplay relating to the job. He also wouldn't clearly respond to a question about the game's slot machines being playable.

Most unfortunately, he dodged a question about network support, stating only that Capcom is looking into it.

Development on Dead Rising 2 is currently half way done, said Inafune. Capcom is aiming for a simultaneous worldwide release.

The most fun I had with the first was spending the 3 in game days chopping up zombies. Pretty sure I did that in one sitting too but didn't manage to kill them all. I also thought that produced the best ending compared to the rediculousness of most of the others.

The time constraints/save system made me give up on this game way back when. Fun game, but eventually the frustration of the time/save system outweigh the fun factor.

                IGN First Look

If you thought the hundreds of zombies on screen at one time in Dead Rising was a lot, prepare yourself for a whole lot more. Dead Rising 2 will offer over 7,000 zombies on screen at one time. I saw it and it looks exactly how you would expect an entire city block filled with undead to appear. It's not just a visual trick either. Capcom proved this by hopping on a motorcycle and tearing through the crowd, leaving a trail of death in its path. Run back through the path and you'll find that all of the dead zombies are still there. For the sequel, the bodies won't disappear until you leave the area.

Perhaps the most important technical improvement comes in the control department. Some may have noticed that the shooting controls in some Capcom games can be a bit wonky. For Dead Rising 2, Blue Castle Games is switching it up a bit by providing an over-the-shoulder shooting stance that offers full strafing and aiming capabilities.

If getting up close and personal with the zombies is more your thing, there's some new tech for you too. Blue Castle Games has added a procedural slicing mechanic. What that means is that if you slice a zombie across the torso with a sword, the zombie will split at that point. Wherever the zombies get cut is where the damage will appear.

I still have the first one sitting on my shelf in shrink wrap. I got it for right around $10 before CC closed its doors. The trailer for the 2nd one looks great. I love the part where he is running around with the giant moosehead killing zombies. The fact that is takes place in Vegas looks really cool too. Looks like a solid rental at the very least.

Swine Flu Outbreak Kills Dead Rising 2 E3 Appearance

Much anticipated Capcom title Dead Rising 2 will now not be shown at this year's E3 thanks to a Swine Flu outbreak in Osaka, Japan, Capcom told Kotaku.

"Our Capcom guys are not coming to E3 because of the Japanese government restrictions," said Capcom's Chris Kramer, Senior Director, Communications and Community. "The company is taking the advisory very seriously."

Japan currently advises its citizens to restrict international travel, but people can still travel if they want to. The government there reported Tuesday that they've had 191 confirmed cases of Swine Flu, more than in any other country other than the US, Mexico and Canada.

Kramer said the company, which is headquartered in Osaka, laid in a supply of surgical masks and hand sanitizers a month or so ago, to try and cut down on possible illness in the company. The country has closed more than 4,400 schools, colleges and kindergartens for the week. The first case of the flu in the country was reported in Osaka.

While Dead Rising 2 will no longer be at the show, all of Capcom's other expected video games will be there, Kramer said. The decision to not show Dead Rising 2 was driven by the fact that Capcom's Keiji Inafune and other developers based in Japan will not be making the trip.

While Canadian-based Blue Castle is developing Dead Rising 2, Inafune is the executive producer and keeps a close eye on the game's development.

"Dead Rising 2 is the only game we won't be able to showcase at E3, because it's at an early stage of development and the team is not comfortable having anyone else demo the code," Kramer said.

We are reaching out to other Japan-based developers to see if anyone else has decided to cancel their E3 showings, but we understand Capcom is the only developer taking that step.

Dead Rising 2 Multiplayer at TGS?

With the Tokyo Game Show right around the corner, IGN inboxes are under constant surveillance for news on demos, appointments, and more. Well, just a second ago, a Capcom e-mail popped up and it immediately got our attention.

It's about Dead Rising 2 at TGS, and we think it's hinting at multiplayer.

"Think you can win big on Terror Is Reality, Fortune City's spectacular zombie game show?" the e-mail reads. "It's you versus the undead with millions watching and baying for blood. Your blood, zombie blood, they don't care, it's all entertainment. It's glamour and gore. It's heroes and zeroes. Which one will you be?"

Normally, a vague e-mail talking about an in-game zombie killing show doesn't make us crazy, but in the e-mail and after registering, we were presented with an image of four guys in similar-looking motorcycle suits. Hmm, is this "Terror Is Reality" a multiplayer mode for folks in Dead Rising 2? Are we just reading too much into this?

Looks like we'll find out at TGS.
