Re: Resistance 3
Posted yesterday, so the patch and Double XP are live now.
Update on Patch 1.04 and Double XP Weekend
Hey everyone,
We wanted to thank all of you for your patience while we iron out the remaining kinks in the Resistance 3 Multiplayer. Many of you have been playing with no issues, but there are also some of you experiencing framerate hitches and other minor bugs. We wanted you to know that we are continuing to work through these issues as quickly as we can.
Tomorrow we anticipate Sony rolling out patch 1.04 (in NA and EU). It includes minor performance optimizations, updates to the Move/Sharpshooter aiming when aiming down the sights, as well as some matchmaking balance tweaks.
Following 1.04 will be a patch that should clean up the rest of the loose ends. There are some smaller framerate issues we are aware of and these will be addressed in patch 1.05, along with some split screen optimization. This patch (1.05) has not gone to Sony approval yet, but should soon. We are continuing to strive for a smooth, positive experience for everyone.
In the meantime, as a THANK YOU to those playing and hanging with us, we are going to offer DOUBLE XP THIS WEEKEND! Everything will be doubled starting now! You will simply have to close out of the game and go back in to get the updated configs.
Thank you and happy leveling!

Resistance®3 Live Chat with Insomniac Games
CardinalRose:
Hi everyone! Thanks so much for joining our chat today with Insomniac Games developer Marcus Smith. Marcus is the Creative Director on Resistance 3, and was also the project manager for Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2.
4:02
CardinalRose:
Marcus, we're very excited to have you with us today. We see everyone's questions rolling in, and to kick things off, can you talk about what the biggest challenges were in making R3?
4:03
Marcus Smith:
The biggest challenge was that I can't type fast.
4:04
Marcus Smith:
Ok, jk. The biggest challenge was how to create a game that could bring new players into the Resistance universe while also building a game that fans of the series would enjoy.
4:04
Comment From ResistanceFan
will we ever see resistance 1 maps in r3
4:05
Marcus Smith:
We're not planning on it, mainly due to technical limitations- our engine is a lot different than is was during the R1 years, so converting assets isn't as easy as it sounds.
4:05
Comment From Gmstr1
was Resistance 3 the last of the series?
4:06
Marcus Smith:
Nope. Nihilistic is currently developing 'Burning Skies' for the PSVita and there might be more opportunities to expand the Resistance Universe even more in the future. Hopefully.
4:06
Comment From Gmstr1
will the pure chimera ever be part of the story? possible R4?
4:07
Marcus Smith:
Anything is possible. I don't want to get any deeper than that.
4:07
Marcus Smith:
Mostly due to said slow typing skillz
4:07
CardinalRose:
We are receiving your questions and comments. You'll see your question appear once it's selected to be answered. We will do our best to answer as many questions as we can.

Comment From Guest
While planning out the story for Resistance 3, was there ever a time in which all of you thought about bringing back Nathan Hale in some way?
4:09
Marcus Smith:
Sure. There was constant debate. Some people thought he should come back as a boss, full of Chimeran powers. But we wanted to tell a story that was much more grounded about a guy doing his best under adverse conditions and the idea seemed a little too..."Metal Gear" for the game we were making (all due respect to MGS, of course)
4:09
Comment From TheWarlord
How much time it took to develop the full game ?
4:10
Marcus Smith:
A little under 3 years. Most of us moved over after finishing Resistance 2, so we needed to take some time off and unwind.
4:10
Comment From johnny frias
What games do u plan on doing for the ps vita and will it be resistance 3
4:11
Marcus Smith:
Insomniac Games is not planning on developing any games for the Vita. Not that it wouldn't be fun, but that's not in the cards.
4:11
Comment From Addie
Can you tell us about the patches to be released in October?
4:13
Marcus Smith:
We've been busy addressing issues, from framerate issues to Move control tweaks. For all the latest info, I'd suggest joining the forums at myresistance.net
4:13
Comment From szerbijn
Is it true that there will be coop based DLC? If so, will it be related to the story or just another type of competitive multiplayer?
4:14
Marcus Smith:
We haven't announced our next DLC plans, but we know how much people enjoy co-op, so... (keyboard angrily yanked by marketing department)
4:14
Comment From PSN: BlackDarkness
Do you think we'll ever get to see what life is like on the Chimeran's Planet? Like being on the surface & exploring it.
4:16
Marcus Smith:
Maybe. It all depends on where the story goes. Not to be evasive, it's just that we're not in a position to say where the franchise will go.

Sushi_Pirate:

4:17
Comment From Weewee
Yes, why not keep nathan hale for Resistance 3? Instead of having Joseph kill him.
4:18
Marcus Smith:
That's the direction the story went during R2. For R3, we wanted to tell a very different angle of the Resistance Universe- focused more on individual strength than military might.
4:18
Comment From Dr. Who
The arsenal in Resistance 3 is terrific, and I noticed that there were some makeovers done to a few weapons (the Magnum, the Rossmore, and Marksman). Was this because you were using a new engine?
4:20
Marcus Smith:
Not so much because of the new engine functionality, but because we get bored easily and having returning weapons means using them for years during development. We basically said- 'if a gun returns, it has to be made better and it has to fit the game we're making'
4:20
Comment From Maida
What major changes have been done in R3 game design?
4:21
Marcus Smith:
The biggest change was that we wanted to return to supporting co-op through the campaign, so gameplay areas had to be designed in a way that promoted player-support-flanking (basically player one flanking the firing line of player two), which supported weapon combinations and... fun. ;-)
4:22
Marcus Smith:
Also, we wanted to encourage 'player choice', so we opened up the spaces a lot more that R1/R2, giving more areas to fight from.
4:22
Comment From Guest
With the popularity of the trophy system has insomniac ever thought about issuing a trophy patch for R1? Fact is, people want trophies for games like R1, MGS4 and Heavenly Sword.
4:23
Marcus Smith:
Nope. The bottom line is that Resistance 1 was created before Trophies were introduced to Playstation and going back to compile a new version of the game to add them in isn't technically/or financially feasible.
4:24
Comment From monkey
i love this game

Marcus Smith:

4:24
Comment From Necrogaz
will you someday join us on the multiplayer of R3?

Yeah, for sure. We're still focusing on stability and patching, but 'play with Insomniac' days will be returning.

Will we get to experience what other parts of the world were like during the invasion like Asia Europesouth america canada etc
4:26
Marcus Smith:
Hopefully. We've had a bunch of different stories being told about the universe in things like the novels, PSP game, Vita game, comics, ARG, etc.
4:26
Marcus Smith:
I'd love to see more stories being told.

4:28

I think R3 is a great story and is an extension of R1 & R2, but stands alone. The controls are tight and the mechanics are fun.
4:29
Comment From R3_Snipe
What is your favorite Resistance 3 multiplayer map?
4:30
Marcus Smith:
I'm partial to the prison. We played it the most because it was one of the first maps, so I saw it evolve so much. Every time we'd playtest it, it was a little better
4:30
Marcus Smith:
But my favorite spots would be gone!

Capelli or Hale?
4:31
Marcus Smith:
Boxers or briefs. These are life's eternal questions....
4:32
Comment From Null_Raptor
In the prequel novel, Resistance: A Hole in the Sky, Nathan Hale (real or imagined) appeared as a voice inside Capelli's head. Was this culled from early story ideas for R3 or something the author, William C. Dietz, came up with on his own?
4:32
Marcus Smith:
Yeah, that was something we were doing. The thought was that Capelli would not know if he was really hearing from Hale, or going crazy. It ultimately came off as confusing though, so we pulled it.
4:33
Comment From n90hurricane
I still have nightmares about the Leviathan from R2. Will you give me a hug?

4:38
Comment From Necrogaz
will there bee someday a Resistance movie? im pretty sure that most of the people here would see a movie about that
4:39
Marcus Smith:
We'd love for there to be a movie. Hollywood works differently than game development, however. And we make games, so we are waiting for the movie types to work things out.

This is kind of like a co-op game. Except I'm typing and you're typing and we're not really shooting anything. But other than that...
4:41
Comment From Null_Raptor
Do you guys work closely with the staff at Brady Games when they are doing the strategy guides? I really enjoy all of the extra art and background story information they include.
4:42
Marcus Smith:
Yeah, we usually invite people in and give them a big tour, design docs, stats, concept art and an early copy of the game. And then they send over a copy for us to review before it comes out.
4:42
Comment From R3_Snipe
I love what you guys did with the multiplayer. Do you have a favorite feature change in the multiplayer?
4:43
4:43
Marcus Smith:
I really like the addition of abilities that let you build a 'soft class'. Helps you feel like you are getting better, but not in an un-balancing way.
4:44
Comment From PSN: BlackDarkness
Are you excited for any games to come out?

Marcus Smith:
...perhaps... *giggle*
4:46
Comment From TheWarlord
Did you guys use the renders from R1 and R2 in R3 or made it from ground up?
4:47
Marcus Smith:
R3 is the sixth game we've made for Playstation 3, but we don;t change our engine wholesale rather than make improvements along the way. So, it's the same and it's different.
4:47
Comment From Draven71
When designing a game campaign that can be played by a single player AND can be played co-op is there a difference in the difficulty in any particular level, in regards to NPC toughness, more NPCs. Some games seem to be the same regardless of how many people are playing. Two people can take out a level a lot easier than just one so it seems to make sense that the co-op campaign on "Normal
4:48
Marcus Smith:
Yes, there's a difference when you add a co-op player. We want the game to be fun and challenging, but keeping the difficulty the same wasn't either.,
4:48
Comment From Necrogaz
wich one do you guys preffer, Move, PS3 controller or Sharpshooter?
4:49
Marcus Smith:
I'm personally lazy and like the Dual-Shock so I can move the least amount possible.
4:49
Marcus Smith:
But I know people who are amazing with the Move, so I'd never discount it.
4:49
Comment From Draven71
Does working on video games make it easier or harder for you to enjoy other video games when you sit down to play them?

Sushi_Pirate:
We are receiving your questions and comments. You'll see your question appear once it's selected to be answered. We will do our best to answer as many questions as we can.
4:50
Marcus Smith:
I'm probably much more critical when I play a game. I just finished Dead Island, for example, and all I can talk about are the things I wish they'd done differently. But I still spent 30+ hours doing all the sidequests and everything. Clearly there is something wrong with me...
4:51
Comment From Blackheart6004
Will Resistance 3 will able to support 60-players online in the future?
4:52
Marcus Smith:
No. We made a very different game than the mp of R2. It was designed from the ground up to be smaller matches, but in terms of map size and mechanics.
4:52
Comment From Dr. Who
Henry Stillman's radio broadcasts from R2 really helped to establish the mood and atmosphere of the Chimeran invasion. Are there any references to radio USA in R3 that people might not pick up on?
4:53
Marcus Smith:
Not specifically. We used to have fiction that the radio network heard in R3 was named after Henry. But eventually we used our radio time on different things.
4:53
Marcus Smith:
Stillman was great. He was conceived and played by one of our sound designers.
4:54

What do you think of the comparisons that have been made to Half Life 2 (positive and negative)?
4:56
Marcus Smith:
If there's anyone to be compared to, I'd like it to be Half-Life. But I think most of the comparisons are a bit of a stretch. I can say no design or story decision was ever made "because Valve did it" or "just like Half-Life!"
4:57
Comment From ♥Comet♥
Will there be DLC's for maps and skins?
4:58
Marcus Smith:
Yes. Hopefully in the next week or two we'll release a DLC pack that contains a new mp game mode, several new skins as well as a patch that will allow us to bring two new maps to all players for free.
4:58
Marcus Smith:
What a deal!

Re: Resistance 3
From Insomniac October 2011 Newsletter
Resistance 3 Survival Pack releasing next week!
For those of you fighting the global resistance against the Chimera in Resistance 3 multiplayer, you’ll be happy to know that we will be releasing the first DLC for the game next week. The Survival Pack brings you a brand new MP game mode: Invasion. Invasion requires both teams to divide resources to simultaneously control multiple control nodes on the map. As you hold the nodes, you receive points. It hearkens back to the wonderful balance in Resistance: Fall of Man of knowing when to send troops on the offensive and when to hold other players back. In addition to Invasion mode, your $3.99 (US) gets you four new skins of the various Survivors in the game, as well as a static XMB theme.
And if that isn't enough to convince you, sometime in the next couple of weeks with Patch 1.05, we will also be providing ALL players with two brand new maps, Creek and the Granary. Two new maps for all, a new invasion mode and skins for a few bucks.Comment

Re: Resistance 3
I finished this game co-op with my friend a week or so ago. Can I just say...
What a heap of rubbish. So glad I wasn't the one that purchased this because it was such a down for me.
This was just about as over-hyped as Haze was when everyone claimed it was the PS3's answer to Halo.
Worst ending ever.Comment

Resistance 3 Patch, Free Maps Coming Soon
Resistance 3 has been out for a while now, and plenty of PS3 gamers are still spending plenty of time on its multiplayer modes. Today, the Survival DLC comes out, which is multiplayer-centric, namely offering a new multiplayer mode. But according to the PlayStation Blog, more multiplayer goodness for Resistance 3 is coming soon, and better yet, this upcoming offering will be free.
James Stevenson, Insomniac's Community Manager, said the following on the Blog: "We are also working on another patch to continue to address issues. When we release this 1.05 patch, we will be including two brand-new maps for all players, the Creek and the Granary." What the specific fixes are in the 1.05 patch remains to be seen, but we'll keep you updated with more information as it breaks.Comment

Re: Resistance 3
Not only barely outsells R1, but below R2:
Resistance Sales Dip
New sequel sells 205,000 fewer copies than Resistance 2.
Sales of Resistance 3 are lagging compared to Resistance 2's sales in 2008.
According to a report by Eurogamer, Resistance 3 sold 180,000 copies in the United States during its first month in stores.
By comparison, Resistance 2 sold 385,000 copies during its first month of sales back in November of 2008.
Our Resistance 3 Video Review
Despite the dip, Resistance 3 did well compared to other September releases, coming in at number seven on NPD's monthly software sales chart.
Sony and Insomniac haven't commented on the sales figures.
Resistance 3 originally hit stores on September 6th. A patch and two new multiplayer maps are coming soon.Comment

Re: Resistance 3
November was also closer to X-mas... I do not count this at a loss just yet. If it is still lackluster after X-mas, then we can talk comparatives. And seeing how it still did well compared to other releases that month shows just the sign of the release window.
Which would disappoint, because the direction they took is much improved.
But I think it was when it was released, and saturation. But the Holidays will play a key role in all of this me thinks.Last edited by EnigmaNemesis; 10-14-2011, 09:39 PM.Ⓥ Boston Red Sox | Miami DolphinsComment

Re: Resistance 3
Yeah I like it better as well but I just want the multiplayer smoothed out and better weapon balance. It really is poppy especially when theirs alot going onscreen and slows down. They should also have sperate hardcore modes that you can choose not have them all looped into one as I always enter an empty room."If you don't have anything good to say, say it often"- Ed the sockComment
