      Re: Homefront (360/PS3)

Yesterday, the reviews came in for THQ's newest first-person shooter Homefront, and while the game's Metacritic average was technically positive, it wasn't positive enough to appease investors. Fearing the lukewarm critical response presaged a commercial failure, investors were bearish on THQ, resulting in a 21 percent crash in the publisher's stock price yesterday, slipping an additional 1.28 percent today to $4.63 a share.

After market close today, THQ moved to assuage investors' panic, making a rare announcement of first-day sales for Homefront. According to the publisher, Homefront sold approximately 375,000 units in North America within 24 hours of release. European and Asia Pacific sales figures were not included in the tally, as the game has not yet seen full release worldwide.

Calling this sales figure "robust," THQ also said that it would be increasing server capacity to accommodate demand for Homefront's multiplayer. As with a handful of other THQ titles, those who purchase new copies of Homefront gain full access to the game's online multiplayer component.

Secondhand users have access to every map and can spend as much time as they wish in Homefront's multiplayer modes. However, they won't be able to advance their characters any further than level 5--out of a possible 75--unless they purchase an online pass for $10.

it'll probably take them weeks to settle the servers down, just like many other games that launch with this awful oversight. Just lazy to hype the hell out of your game, tout how it has the most preorders in the history of your company, only to then "underestimate" the server load requires to run it as advertised. Just awful THQ.

I'm not banking on the issues getting fixed anytime soon. Ala UFC 10. That game was a mess online. I starting to feel like I've been screwed over again by THQ.

Homefront Dedicated Server Capacity Doubles – More on the Way

              ....

What are we doing to address this problem? We are configuring more servers right now for all formats, across the globe, in order to meet demand. We have already doubled our capacity in the past 24 hours, and we are continuing to bring even more servers online over the next few days.

We expect that most players will be able to join a dedicated server today, but if you still experience connection issues, there is another option.

Our ‘Skirmish’ playlists are capped at a lower player count (16 max) which means they do not require a dedicated server. Our peer-to-peer networking code runs great, and the performance will be similar to what you’d expect from any FPS with a solid peer-to-peer infrastructure, like the Halo series. You will certainly be able to get a queue-free taste of the full Homefront experience, until our dedicated server capacity is high enough to support demand.

So, why did we not foresee this problem you ask? Actually, we thought we had... Homefront’s huge pre-order tally had given a good idea of how many copies would be sold in the first 24 hours, first week, and first month. We then estimated our required server capacity as a percentage of total sales, based on information we have from both THQ and competitor titles. We increased our estimate further to be ‘safe’ – specifically to avoid issues like this!....

                Re: Homefront (360/PS3)

(Reuters) - THQ Inc (THQI.O) said it sold 375,000 copies of its new military-themed video game, "Homefront" on the first day of sales in North America, which helped its shares recover slightly after a deep sell-off a day earlier.

In comparison, Activision Blizzard's (ATVI.O) "Call of Duty: Black Ops," the top war-themed game on the market, sold 5.6 million copies on its first day in stores in North America and the United Kingdom. THQ's numbers for "Homefront," do not include Europe, where the game launches later this week.

"We are delighted with first day sales for 'Homefront' and are already fulfilling re-orders for the game from multiple retailers," Brian Farrell, THQ's chief executive said in a statement.

THQ shares closed down 1.3 percent on Tuesday at $4.63, after falling as much as 7.7 percent. On Monday, THQ's shares plunged more than 20 percent when it received mixed reviews on influential websites like Metacritic and Game Rankings.[ID:nN15255216]

The company's management has made efforts to convince investors that its upcoming games lineup is its strongest ever and the performance of "Homefront," its first release in that slate, is being closely watched by Wall Street.

"Homefront," has been unfairly compared to the "Call of Duty," franchise which has more resources behind it, said Kaufman Brothers analyst Todd Mitchell, adding that THQ's game should be viewed like an indie movie, with lower sales expectations.

"It cost significantly less money than Call of Duty and management said it would break even by selling 2 million copies," Mitchell said.

Mitchell estimates the game will sell 1.3 million units this quarter.

The futuristic game, which is set in 2027, features a North Korean army occupying a bankrupt United States, Japan and Southeast Asia.

The game's content and an associated marketing blitz have touched nerves at a time of heightened tension on the Korean peninsula. [ID:nTOE72D05X]

If you really enjoyed the Crysis 2 demo and only have the money for one game right now, then it would be safer to go with that. I would love to have both this and Crysis, but am sticking with this instead. I have played the other two Crysis games, so I have my fill of it.

As for Battlefield 3, you'll be waiting 6+ months, so you probably shouldn't worry about it now.

Thats all there is to it. I just got it from Gamefly today and I can't get into an Online game to save my life. Just flat out inexcusable. Especially if you bought the game.

I had trouble keeping a straight face with the campaign so far. Since I learned the writer of the story helped inspire Walter Sobchak from The Big Lebowski, I've been constantly thinking that I'm in one of his dreams.
