    Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

I just started this last night. Pretty awesome so far but so much to learn. So I got that elf/arrow guy Faendal to follow me but I think I got him killed. Do I need him for anything or can I go on without him? I have a save about an hour before the spot he dies. I could go back but not sure if I really need to or not.

You can and will find other followers so it's kind of up to you. An hours worth can be a lot to backtrack, if it were a few minutes I'd say yes (not a strict RP player like some). It does suck to lose Faendal bc he's very helpful with his bow.

Are you playing on console or pc?

Console. I think I may backtrack. I'm hoping I have a save in the place we were in where he got killed. If that's the case I may only be about 30 minutes behind. *fingers crossed.

He's really only useful for his archery training early on if you are into that.

Yeah, I was actually 2 hours behind so i just said forget him and took over his house.

I have to say I'm about 10 hours in and I am quite overwhelmed. Trying to figure out how to use Spells and combat skills faster, Chemist stuff, cooking, forging, sharpening, and I just found something about enchanting. What the heck is that and where do i find the info on how to do all this stuff. The manual is meh at best.

Still engrossing, I just feel like I'm missing out by not learning how to do these things.

Specialize in a few things and go from there. Don't let it overwhelm you as the game is what you make it.

That is why I love TES games so much.

I remember the days of RPGs where you could go into a house or cave or whatever and loot it for everything. Now I have to pick and choose my loot wisely lol!

This is the only game on earth where I'd recommend buying the strategy guide.

I know the internet exists, but I can't tell you how useful that damn thing was the first time I played this game.

Just play the game. It will become easier and more clear the more you build your personal experience playing.

But one bit of advice; dont try and be a master of all trades from the get go. The more you play the more you favor what interests you/ your character(s). You'll get the hang of it. You dont really need a strategy guide.

Man just thinking about how big and vast Skyrim was makes me wonder just what in the hell the next ES game will be like...crazy....

Thanks for the 411 guys. If I can pick up guide on the cheap I'll check it out. One question. I think the problem with learning the crafting stuff is not having the items needed in my inventory because I can only carry so much. Armor/Sword/Bow? Or Elves ears/Mountain flowers/troll fat? Tough choice I know.

One question though, how does enchanting work? I can't figure it out. What exactly do I need to do that? I swear my sleep time has taken an incredible hit since I started this.

I was always stuck on this as well, but eventually figured it out. Hopefully this helps.

                          1. Find an item with an enchantment already on it.
                          2. Find a soul gem, any kind will work.
                          3. Find an Arcane Enchanting table.
                          4. Select the item with the enchantment on it, and a "learn skill" or something to that affect will come up in the bottom left part of your screen. MAKE SURE that you want the enchantment, but not the item. Because the item is destroyed in order to learn the enchantment. It's usually worth it, but if you've come across some fantastic weapon that you like, I'd advise you not to destroy it for the enchantment.

So let's say you choose to destroy an item with 8% Archery increase. After that, you can enchant any item (as long as you have the necessary materials ) with an 8% Archery increase.

                          5. Select the item you which to enchant, the item enchantment you learned from destroying the item, and a soul gem (which is basically fills up the enchantment bar, depending on how powerful the gem).

                          6. Click enchant, and you should be good to go!

Do any of y'all playing the PC version use the "Texture Pack Combiner" with all the recommended packs? I recently upgraded my HDD, so I need to d/l all my mods again, but TPC looked valuable. Any thoughts?

I kind of want to pick up the legendary edition guide just so I can have it for the DLC stuff.
