@#$%$#$# Sectopod just killed my Col. he had 46 kills I didn't know they have two over-watch shots. I used my lighting reflexes assault to trigger the first one and grab a point blank shot, then I tried to finish the mech off with my other assault and he got blasted in the face.

Just lost my first. A rookie, Clap Trap. Almost made it. I should have pulled him back to safer cover. Wow, I actually feel a sense of failure.

        Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown

So I get into a a small skirmish with a UFO, it was one that was spotted landing however the Difficulty that was selected was not hard (Forget exactly what it was called) so I throw out my main squad for easy Exp and such totally ignoring in the debriefing my advisor said that since it wasnt a crash the threat level and resistance could be higher......Well 4 Muttons, 4 thin men, 6 regular aliens, 1 of those people that disappear after you kill them and 4 of those flying Cyborg things later I am like WTF!

Out of all that I only lost 1 guy. A level 3 guy I just threw in there, luckily I had like 3 heavy with shrapnel and regular rockets and 2 others with grenades along with 1 sniper (I got the 6 man squad upgrade). I shot all my rockets at the muttons and threw way to many grenades as well. My sniper then just picked off the stragglers one by one. I dont usually use explosives since you lose valuable artifacts and such but I wasnt losing men on this mission.

Now I got 2 SHIVS I can use. One alloy and another regular. I got to say I love them. They have great support to them and can take more of a beating it seems. Plus I dont get to attached to them as much as my soldiers. Dont get me wrong, I still dont want them destroyed I just dont sweat it if they do because I can build others. Names are Wall-E and Rover.

Yep. Just unlocked a couple SHIV's myself. It will be nice to have high powered cannon fodder when my guys are healing. Plus, don't they count as mobile cover?

I think there is something in the upgrade tree for our guys to get two reaction shots as well. I think I gave it to one of my team last night.

Also...I have company(my grandson) and needless to say, without my undivided attention(he was watching me play and is giving it a try today) I was getting slaughtered.
At one point....4 of my squad were turned into zombies. It was pretty bad having to shoot my own guys....Including my Captain...who bears an eerie resemblance to myself and also happens to have the same name as me

Anyone having and graphical issues on the ps3? I was playing last night and lost the graphic controller icons to input commands as well as the country flags. In those spots they just show up as blue and purple pixels, everything else shows up fine. I would hate to start over and reload everything. I did end up losing Lee Christmas because of it!

Are classes assigned randomly or can that be influenced somehow depending on how you use a rookie on a mission? I can't say I've taken a ton of rookies out on missions in my game so far but when I have they always get assigned to assault or support. The only sniper and heavy I have are the ones I started with at the beginning of the game. I'm a huge fan of my sniper, btw. Aliens shouldn't mess with him.

I wish I had gotten in on the Green Man Gaming 25% deal earlier this week but I was too busy to notice they had the PC version on sale.

Looks like the promo is now down to either $5 off the PC version or $10 in Greenman credit.

Well I kind of answered my own question. Was playing with my usual group when I ran into a total of 8 mutons at an abduction site. I lost all but two of my squad. My beloved sniper didn't make it. Got my butt seriously kicked. Realizing I was in bad shape squad experience-wise, on the council member nation front, and I seemed kind of far into the game, I decided to start over. Bumped the difficulty up to normal and turned ironman on. I'm trying to use different guys on missions early on now. So far by doing this I have like 4 snipers and 1 support guy. Go figure. I didn't do anything to cause that as far as I know. Had like 3 guys killed already, including my Swedish assault guy, Dolph Lundgren. Still have my Argentinian heavy, Lionel Messi, though.

Actually the current promo is the best. The 25% off was for anything except X-Com,just as the current 20% is anything but X-Com. They were giving away a free game you could trade in for $8 towards it before but it was $49.99 then. So now you're getting it to ammount to $40 or $35 if you want to buy something else.

It seems you can influence the creation of support units, but that may just be coincidence as the rest seems random.

I've purposely sent rookies in using assault tactics (I only have one assault guy and he's also my most experienced-if he goes, I'm screwed). I've tried to hit guys from farther who I want to be snipers, etc. Nothing influences it from what I can tell.

However, I've given medkits to rookies and each time I've used one, they became a support unit. Small sample (5 or 6 times), so as I said, it may be coincidence, but it's the only thread of consistency I've seen.

I've looked elsewhere on the web and seen people mentioning the same thing with the rookie-medkit connection. I actually tried some of the same things you did in my old game. Maybe I wasn't quite doing what I was intending to do with some of them though. In this new game, the two guys that were assigned to the sniper class did kill some enemies from a decent distance away IIRC. I may have to experiment with that at some point and really try to see if there's any connection between how a rookie kills its first alien, which is basically how they get promoted, and what class they are assigned.

Patience is the key with satellites. It takes a good 20 days to build one, not to mention needing the resources for uplinks. Just temper panic as much as you can while building satellites. I already lost one country, but I'm a ways in now, and have satellites over all but two countries. Pretty sure only one country is at a 3 or above panic wise.

Satellites take patience, money, and resources, but are of the utmost importance.
