That's one of the nicest things about this game.
The "normal" difficulty a good challenge, but definitely something most gamers can handle quite well and get into it.
I started on normal, because I haven't played the original X-Com or a strategy game of this nature for years.
On normal it was a fair to easy challenge.
I played a bit...got familiar with the controls and weapons/scheme of tech and moved onto classic/ironman.
You will immediately feel the difference.
Still fair but a much bigger challenge.

This game will go up there with Civilization and be a game that is installed on all my computers and one that I will always go back to.

Melissa "The wolverine" Jericho, a ficional name I made up for my main squad leader and she is a one woman army as an assault specialist. She has 13 kills thus far and i have to say I'm growing attached to a lot of my soldiers.

This game can be so nervewracking at times, especially when you make a stupid move and you're hoping the aliens miss on your turn. But more often than not this game is unforgiving, which is why it's so fun.

Yes, it's a completely different experience on classic Iron man. Enemies have more hit points they run more patrols you miss more shots they make more shots. And the strategy layer actually matters a whole lot more.

Thanks for putting this game to the forefront.

In my current game, both my Captain and my Major (was soon to be Colonel) were killed when a Muton (I think?) threw a grenade against them behind a car and it exploded. They had 24 and 22 kills respectively. I also have 2 countries backed out already as well.

I learned the grenade lesson the hard way as well. Got Samuel L. Jackson and Bruce Willis killed when they were too close to a car, and a muton lobbed a grenade at them.

Speaking of mutons, F the berserkers. Soooo many HP. Took a rocket and two more soldiers to take just one down, which leaves you crazy vulnerable to be attacked by the rest of the mutons. Nothing you can do though, you HAVE to take the berserkers out. They'll mess you up if they get too close.

Seriously, I've lost all my legit leaders. My last was a major, who was an assault, but he just couldn't hold out from a landed UFO.

So far I've only been truly defeated on one mission, though.
Lol i hear you! Ever since the game was announced the XCOM "veterans" have been wide eyed and soaking up all the info we could find. Really has its own "atmosphere" as far as dread, excitment and the "freaking send the rook in first" attitude.
Just very happy the game has been received well and hope the future is very bright for XCOM. Been long time coming.

THis game is highly addicting. Giving me the ability to edit my soldiers as well as level them up actually gets me attached to them.

Will be having a marathon session tonight (and sneak in a game on my 1994 Yankee season replay on The Show 12).

I am playing normal on the first play through. Next one will be Classic/Ironman.

There's a bug for the PC version that's really annoying. I've googled around and found some others have it too. It's with the SHIV. The standard one sometimes is not selectable for a mission. You have to dismantle it and make another one. Then you have about a 50/50 chance of it working the next time.....frustrating.

If you make the Alloy SHIV you can select it in the mission....only the only options you have for it are to drive it around like a scout. It cannot fire or overwatch or anything. Hope they patch this quickly as it makes this game even harder.

I have had that problem on XBOX as well, except for I can select it, but in battle I can't move it so it I can't continue in the game.

I am in the very early stages going through the tutorial. My cat is still alive

I am adding a rookie to every mission I go on not because of losses but to build up a talent pool. They are also useful as pawns during missions to tentatively push back the fog of war.

I like how soldiers who take damage during a sortie but survive are put on the injured list and are out of action after the mission with the duration depending on the seriousness of the wound. It is like a sports game where you have to make roster moves. Really good feature. Again it encourages me to build a robust enough roster and play rookies for the sake of depth development.
