I can vouch that not everyone gets an A on their first one. Plating on classic my first playthrough and I received a C. I lost a country since I had no idea what I was doing. Was able to learn on the fly and got an A on my second council report.

After spending my whole lunch reading the strategy guide I think I finally have a grasp on what's going on. Think I'm gonna restart one last time and sink in and let the chips fall where they may.
Gonna throw on my new Astro A50 headset tonight and go at it. Love this game!!!

Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
The way this game plays out sometimes is hilarious. Last night I downed first large UFO and made one of the biggest rookie mistakes ever, one that my former CO would have torn me apart for in an after action debrief. I set up a perfect large room breech in the main cabin and dropped three Mutons that had higher position and then pulled my sniper, Major Oliver "Green Arrow" Queen up and grappled to the top of the UFO to provide close support overwatch as my assault team egressed the main cabin.
Just as my team pushed outside a threesome of Chryssalid came charging up my rear from the back room in the UFO I failed to clear. Sure enough one jumped right up to the top through the skylight and zombified Green Arrow. My assault team was able to pivot and wipe out the Chryssalid, but Heavy Gunner Captain Dinah "Black Canary" Lance had to put down Green Arrow.
Tearful to see my 11 mission 33 kill sniper eat it but hilarious that his girlfriend was the one that had to put him out of his misery.Comment

Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Wow, I might have to pick this game up. Seeing how this thread keeps bumping and reading everyones comment it looks like a fun game. Would you guys say its in the same vein as Valyria Chronicles?
I had a lot of fun with that game, but I never really finished it. Then my PS3 died and I lost my saves. If it is close, I'll definitely snag this game up on PC.Comment

Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
I don't want seconds to be precious, I want to take a turn, think about it, sip a beer, text someone, look at what the enemy is doing ... I find some games can actually be stressful!! this is more relaxing, it's still gripping, but I can just chill the hell out and do things at whatever pace I want on my own terms.Liquor in the front, poker in the rear.Comment

Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Ethereal's if you don't know what they are you will soon enough and they will give you nightmares.
I'm two story missions past the alien base and the game has taken a turn for the worse. I'm now doing missions that have no less than 18+ enemies per map and they aren't filled with Thin Men and Mutons. I just did a terror mission with 3 Sectopods, 6 Chryssalids, 6 Muton Elites, and 3 Heavy Floaters for a cherry on top. FMLComment

I guess I'm doomed then. I lost two troops in the tutorial bomb mission. John Matrix and Martin Riggs you will be missed.
I want to thank everyone for introducing me to my latest addiction.Comment

Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
This is precisely why I like it and what xavier said ... I don't want to be rushed in this type of game. I remember playing other strategy games like what happened to command and conquer and unlike the early days it became about how fast you can frantically organize your units/base and seconds became precious.

It's funny how we've come full circle. I grew up in the turn based strategy days and always preferred them. Then in the 90's is became RTS. Turn based was viewed as "lame" and boring and for old gamers.
Now it may come back in vogue...which is fine with me. Then again I see girls dressing the same way they did in the 80's these days. Funny how history repeats itself.PSN: JISTIC_OS

I currently just activated the first "story movie" where the commander is talking about the aliens changing their tactics and attacking cities. They hit me with 3 floaters, 4 sectoids, and couple thin men I believe.
I am praying I get some engineers at the end of this month review. I need to build some satellites BADLY!!Comment

Then came C&C, Total Annihilation, Warcraft, and Age of Empires games and everything changed.
So glad to see a turn base game making a good comeback honestly!!!
Ohhh with that said, if anyone happens to have Combat Mission Barbarossa to Berlin I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to play a game against someone. One of the few games you can even play turn based through e-mail.
If you have not played it, it is by far the greatest world war 2 turn based strategy game. It is VERY similar to X-com, you plan and plot your moves and then you hit play and 60 secs of action unfolds in real time in front of you. Then the opponent does the same thing. FANTASTIC fun game filled with massive amount of strategy!!

Talk about Full circle, I remember growing up LOVING the Battleground series. It was turn based and feature Gettysburg, Waterloo, Shiloh, Antietam, and several other civil war games. Bull Run was my favorite I remember.
Then came C&C, Total Annihilation, Warcraft, and Age of Empires games and everything changed.
