I just got it last night and started on normal, since I never played the original. I was thinking about bumping up to classic, but I'll take your advice and enjoy surviving missions for now.

Wait, your soldiers will fire at your own man when in panic?

      Is that automated?

      Sounds real interesting.

Yes, and it's all dependant on your soldier's Will rating. On the higher level I noticed that your rookies start out with a lower base Will, so it will be much more prevalent early on before you advance some soldiers.

When a player gets hit or sees another soldier die there is a chance that they will enter a panicked state. Then they will randomly do something. I've seen them shoot at squadmates, shoot at the enemy, hunker down, etc. Then you lose their next turn.

Will is increased most through successful missions where the soldier came through unscratched and promotions. Being gravely wounded imparts a permanent penalty on that soldier's Will.

Hearing how everyone is saying classic is so tough I doubt I'll try it, I get too pissed now when I get my people get killed on normal. On classic it doesn't sound like I'd ever get anyone past squadie rank.

I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

do the adjacency bonuses for satellites, labs, workshops, etc. work up and down a level? or do they have to be next to each other, side to side only?

Yep. I have a nice little square of 3 satellite uplinks and 1 satellite nexus that gives me enough satellite capacity to nearly cover all member nations.

This game is kicking my ***.....on Normal. However I am slowly but surely getting a lot better on the battlefield.

Last night I took down a medium sized UFO over China. I took a 5 person squad with a sniper, support, 2 heavies and an assault. I really thought out each and every move, taking my time, using my rockets and grenades when it made sense. I also captured my second alien (the crystal one). I had a heck of a great run and felt like I finally got "it" as far as tactics and being patient.

                    It felt great.

Nice man. The biggest thing i had to learn was to make the enemies come to you. At first, I'd charge them with everyone, but the farther you go into the fog of war to kill a visible enemy, the more likely it is that more enemies will spot you. Then, you have to try and kill multiple enemies at once. Makes life rather difficult.

I typically try my best to pick someone off with my sniper, put some guys into overwatch, then pop a smoke grenade. Usually one or two enemies move into someone's line of sight in overwatch, and the rest are better protected from the smoke.

Oh yeah. Overwatch is your friend. I now set up some really great turkey shoots putting guys/gals on overwatch. That is a huge tactic I have learned to use often.

I am really in a good groove right now....but I know things can get bad really fast. The game is a great challenge.

Played a couple games of multiplayer with Phobia today. We went 1-1. First game I got annihilated, then the second game I had three floaters on the roof and he sent his soldier right into them and I got the upper hand. The multiplayer is pretty fun, although the point totals makes it challenging.

Yea man that was my first time trying the multiplayer. It was fun though we should do it some more.

The first game you had a good squad but the 4 misses in a row on the berserker was crazy.

Then the second game I thought I was going to have good protection on the roof to rain hell on you with my 4,000 point sniper with grapple and plasma sniper rifle. Instead I ran straight into 3 floaters I never expected there.

I thought I was going to have a chance with the cyber disk though. Your guy made a great reaction shot to end it.

So many combinations to try! I would like to see us do some kind of tournament bracket of 360 guys and do a multiplayer 10,000 point battle. Would be cool to see all the different combinations of squads and tactics unfold.

Yeah it was my first time trying it as well, the second game my luck took a complete 180 and went from missing everything, to hiting everything and getting criticals.
The Cyberdisk was tough, I am just happy I got the other two guys on the roof before you took out all of the floaters.
I'd definitely like a tourney, it would be a lot of fun too see how it would unfold.
