re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
So I was on the disarm bomb mission thing last night, and I didn't fully understand what the heck I was supposed to be doing. By the time I started getting in the groove about what to do the bomb was armed and I had to evacuate.........well, I thought I could still disarm the bomb so I didn't " evacuate" and got the entire squad killed.....LOL
Didn't save after, hopefully I can retry it.......Comment

re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
WOW it is good to be back!!!!!! This game is SEXY! Easiest way to describe X-COM for those that never played it.
Chess + War hammer (table top warfare) + playing GI Joes as a kid attacking your friends base = X-COM
Its one part chess where every move needs to be calculated and thought out. Its two parts table top board game, where to move, what ability to use, and what line of sight do you have. Then it takes the joy toys had when we were little kids & the randomness of each "encounter" with the "bad guys".
This will be hard to beat as my GOTY. That is until ARMA 3 is released

re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
After reading some of the impressions here and seeing who the game was made by, I decided to pick this one up after work yesterday.
I never played the original, so I threw it on easy to get my bearings. I'm officially hooked. I made a lot of mistakes but learned a lot from them. I'll probably restart this weekend on the normal level.
I love that every decision and move you make has to have a purpose. I'm guessing that money and resource management is going to be a lot harder on the higher difficulty levels too. Can't wait to really get into it!
I had a similar experience. Best Buy was sold out - no problem - Gamestop is in the stripmall attached to Best Buy. Sold out there too. Luckily, the salesman at Gamestop called the other Gamestop and had them put aside their last PS3 copy for me so it didn't sell on my drive over. The salesman at Gamestop 2 said the demand for this game was terribly underestimated.Last edited by ImTellinTim; 10-12-2012, 09:05 AM.Comment

re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Man, there is SO much stuff to juggle at the home base. I'm scurrying to build as many satellites and satellite facilities as possible to tamper panic, but I just ran up against a LARGE spaceship, and realized my interceptors were grossly underpowered. So now I'm trying to research upgrades for that, while trying to better my equipment for my soldiers. I don't want to be underpowered in the field, as the enemies are getting tougher and tougher.
I literally can't put this game down. I live and die with every shot, and hold my breath hoping I can finish researching the next upgrade before another UFO is spotted.Comment

I think I'm going to name my guys after hockey players to keep better track of them - trying to stick to the correct countries/types too when possible (Russian sniper = Alex Ovechkin). Yep, this is what I'm thinking about at work today.Comment

Really good part of the game IMOMan, there is SO much stuff to juggle at the home base.

I have 3 interceptors for the U.S. now and when a large spaceship came in...I scrambled the first one. When he was about 3/4 damaged I aborted his mission and sent the second interceptor scrambling. Two shots and a little damage to the interceptor and the ship came down.
Sent out my ground team and found some great tech to research.
What I'm doing now is sending out 1 sniper....2 support....1 medic(one of my support has a medkit as well though) and 1 assault. The second support carries the stun gun and I have managed to get 3 types of alien captured alive and researched.
Finally starting to use smoke grenades as well. One of those behemoths had to of my squad pinned down...both needing to reload on their next turn. Popped some smoke....he couldn't see them and missed them on his next turn. Flanked and got him. Good stuff.
Definitely on track for Game of the Year consideration.
Now we see what Ramone was so excited about!

Just....
Gotdammit.
Should have never popped into this thread. Now I have the urge to go get it now.
1 question before I decide on purchasing this game.
How similar is it to chess and what capabilities does it have online (as in multiplayer. Co-op or VS)?Comment

re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
If you don't go with a run-n-gun mentality(all the time)....it's got strategic elements like chess(albeit simpler in a sense)...
but...
I find that covering pieces(unit members) as you do in chess is important...especially on the higher levels and with larger threat missions.....having the right mix of units(medic to keep players alive)....and the actual strategy can give you the feeling of a chess match...you move...they move...you adjust...all the time having an underlying strategy.
I just completed a mission....and I finished off all the thin men.....floaters....and most of the greys.....and left the last one to be cornered. I was trying to get my unit with stun capabilities in close to get him alive. I did get close...right next to him...and his stun failed to work. He was dead meat if I didn't have the foresight to cover him with another support unit on the same turn.....
I didn't get him alive....but I didn't lose one of my squaddies.
