Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
I'll try and get through the 20+ pages of posts I've missed while out of town, but seems like this game is everything we wanted and more.
Gonna be tough holding off for a bit waiting for a price drop, especially since i got some Best Buy gift cards at the wedding showers we had out of town.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Restarted after getting up to the alien base and things being a complete mess on my first attempt on Normal difficulty.
Now I'm back at the same point, but this time I took my time and didn't trigger the story research as fast. This helped a lot. As long as you can keep the panic levels low and get those satellites up, there is no rush. This also seems to allow you to keep your weapons up with the new units you have to face. I'm sure it's not this way on the higher difficulty levels, but this is what I found is working for me now. I've completely lost South America, but that was the price I had to pay to keep the rest of the continents satisfied. I have 3 more satellites to put up in Europe then I'll have full coverage.
I have one soldier who's been promoted to the highest rank. Sniper Sonia "Specter" Bompastor from France. She has been known to completely clear a battlefield from a far distance in a matter of a few turns. Once I get some Archangel Armor on her, the fun is really going to start. My other standouts are are Heavy Steven "The Captain" Gerrard (clears the way for assaults) and Medic Sergei "Red Wing" Federov. They are both one promotion away from the top rank.
I took advice from somone earlier in the thread and color code my units by type using the bonus pack options. It helps out visually during the battles to quickly know what type of unit needs to be where.Last edited by ImTellinTim; 10-15-2012, 01:39 PM.Comment

This is the problem I am having right now. I have done too much research and uncovered a lot of killer tech....the game is becoming really unforgiving and I am playing on Normal.
But I love my soliders! So I am going to continue on.....I am sure I am going to get overwhelmed and lost my first playthrough. There is so much to manage.....so I am still getting a grasp of the entire game and different approaches.
I am going to pick up the manuel to help me out. I played the original but never stuck with it. I may have played 30-40 hours on the PC version back in the day and then moved on. I forgot how awesome this type of game is (RTS).
What an amazing job 2K did on this game. Now Playing on PS5:

This was my line of thinking as well, until I found that the game has checks for what you've done prior to attacking the alien base. If you wait to long there is a sh%t storm waiting for you on the other side of that mission. In my current Iron man play through the alien base was easy for me.
Afterwards all hell broke loose I've been on three back to back mission where I have faced at least 20 enemies per map. I don't mean Thin Men, Sectiods, and Mutons. I'm facing 2 Sectopds, 3-5 Muton Elites, a handful of Cyberdiscs and 2 Sectiod Commanders a pop. In those missions I have had 4 Col. with Psionic powers killed.
I was feeling real good about myself up until after I raided that alien base the game quiclky brought me back down to earth. Those damn Sectoid Commanders are giving me fits. If you don't kill them within your turn they are going to mind control your units every time.Comment

Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
To add to what allbthere stated....
If only you could pick up fallen squad mates weapons/gear.
I lost my sniper(quite dumb....he's my hang back overwatch guy) by pushing a bit early(friggin thin man came out of nowhere and nailed him).
I just kept seeing his sniper rifle laying beside him round after round and wanted so much to be able to pick it up and give it to someone else.
That and everyone should have a slot for a medkit.
Only medic class would heal the 4 or 5 points.....a "regular" unit would only heal a bit or stabilize a player...but it's frustrating to have your medic get it early(and turn into a zombie!) and no there is no hope of any medical help.
Deeper into the game and it's still a great purchase.
I definitely found myself being more careful with established players...but I've since went back to a more aggressive approach evenly with everyone.(you didn't get those medals by playin' it safe son!)
Right now my keys
-Overwatch. When setting up my assaults...I never use both turns to move or a move/fire combo unless it's a pretty sure shot and there is backup. For me....until the firefight gets heavy...it's move/overwatch
-Rotate units in when starting missions....a LOT. This becomes key later when you start losing vets.
-Stick together(within reason.....don't bunch up...just enough to barely cover each other or cover someone within one move command). Spreading out to far or wide.....with no way to cover each other is certain death.
-Get the perk for the extra shot on overwatch
-Get the perk that doesn't end your turn on a fire command.
-Use rockets/grenades if they pack up.(to hell with the lab rat telling you your ruining valuable tech.....she's not getting turned into ground beef!)
-Get the skeleton suit. Being able to grapple hook up is a great bonus....especially if pinned down.

Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Not yet..I'm holding off on doing so just yet....I'm trying to get some more squad mates promoted and some more tech.
I've got some decent armor...but far from what I need.
I've got the precision lasers and the heavy lasers(pistols and rifles)...but definitely need more firepower.
I'll also grab what perks I can from the Officers Training School before that assault.

Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown
I received my first monthly report last night, it was also a A. I am refraining from reading anything on HOW best to build the base, research, or upgrade your soldiers. I want my first play through to be truly just experiencing what the game is throwing at me and figuring it out as I go. I'm enjoying the hell out of the game so far. I'm moving slow but loving every second.Comment
