    Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown

I don't know how I survived that alien base without losing anyone.

A few close calls. I hate (as a person, but not a player) how the maps are designed to force you to send one guy blindly into a room. Luckily I was smart enough to use Run & Gun when I did it and used the Gun part of it to kill the alien that approached me. Then I used Run & Gun for my second Assault soldier to kill the other alien. If not for that, I would have lost my favorite Assault soldier. She's been with me for 10 missions.

Another moment one of my Heavy's took two huge hits. Was left with one bar (lucky). So I moved her away from the battle so my medic can tend to her.

Then there was that advanced sectoid that decided to control the mind of one of my soldiers. Luckily, Bogdanov took the alien out and was promptly promoted to Colonel.

I did end up losing a soldier in a Very Difficult mission right after the assault. Not necessarily a stupid move, but a surprise attack. Stationed the soldier behind a car and an alien surprised me and attacked her on her exposed side.

I finally got into this game a little the past few days. Quite addictive, but man is it hard.

Had my first country (Nigeria) leave the council last night because a bunch of rookies I had to send in due to injuries failed miserably at a mission.

I just started mission 3. Does anyone have advice or recommendations for someone that is just starting out?

              Don't rush.

Anything in particular you're looking for advice on?

Something that helped me big time:

Try and put up as many satellites as you can in each region, eventually getting a satellite everywhere. Build nexuses together so you get the bonus. If you don't work on the satellites early then it'll be tougher to keep some areas from leaving XCOM.

For battles, always end your players with Oversight (if you can). Don't move too fast and do dashing a lot, you'll end up overextended and lose guys fast.

                  CMH,
I've read a few posts in this thread about regretting decisons made in the beginning. Some people even had to start over. One question I have so far is how to recover research items from the battlefield. Is this done automatically? I killed 6 aliens and at the end it showed that I only recovered 4.

                  Mgoblue,
Not building enough sats seem to be one of the main regrets from people that started over. I will have to look into what oversight is and your dashing tip will save lives. Thanks for the tips.

I think grenades and rockets completely obliterate aliens... so there will not be anything recoverable.

                      It's done automatically.

And like bghost said, using grenades destroys artifacts and makes them unrecoverable.

When it comes to regretting decisions, I think for me it's just learning strategy. There are things we can warn you of, but playing the game is where you'll really figure it out. You're going to lose men, but every time you do, you'll know how to avoid that death. Or at least try to.

Granades and rockets were used. That explains a lot.

Oversight is available to everyone. If you just move within the Blue area, you get a 2nd turn with that guy. Instead of dashing you use that 2nd turn as "Oversight" (Y on Xbox I think). This lets your guy shoot at one enemy that moves within his sight. Lets you be prepared for guys to rush you, vs getting thrashed by a group you didn't expect.

Yeah, my dashing/overwatch strategies are just learning to go slow and be smart. Nothing special, just find that being ready for guys to come at you is better than not being able to return fire...

You still lose guys, but it's about minimizing the losses.

Oh, careful grouping your guys together too closely. Aliens will not hesitate to use well timed grenades to shred your key soldiers.

This is how I approach now. At first, I was eager to get things going. I didn't necessarily dash, but I didn't realize how vulnerable I'd leave guys without moving as a unit.

Now I approach to bait and fire. I want the enemy to come to me (well, not all the way up to me because some enemies will make you pay for that quickly) and then fire at them.

A good thing to know, WildFan, is you always have an opportunity to fire first if you strategize how you make the wave of enemies approach.

You'll learn quickly that enemies are stationed together and come in waves. You can theoretically have every wave open up at you. But that's suicide so avoid that. When you have a wave of enemies attacking you, deal with them first by NOT approaching further into the map.

So, if guys are attacking you on the left, you might avoid sending men too far to the right of the map. Sure it can help flank, but if you mistep, you'll open another wave and now you'll be dealing with twice the enemies.

I also always try to do one of the following two things, with each switching during a mission depending on my positioning, health, map, etc.

                              1. Send a soldier out to be bait on my first move. When the wave opens, get a free chance to position and fire at the enemy first with the remaining soldiers.

                              2. Overwatch my team and then send a soldier out as bait to open the wave. When the enemy approaches, my entire team will fire reaction shots thanks to Overwatch, getting a free shot on every enemy.

Each has its benefits and negatives.

Overwatch is always a last move a soldier can take whether they have two or one move remaining. So be aware that if you overwatch heavy all the time, you may get reaction shots, but now the enemy gets the next move. Depending on how you've stationed your soldiers, that could be trouble.

Sometimes, it's a waste to overwatch your entire squad too quickly.

took down a battleship and captured an ethereal for the the "all research projects" achievement.

next play time - what i believe is the end of the game mission.
