Yes - don't you hear that terrible wailing fax-machine-like noise in the background when reading any of my posts?

Nah, it's not that I "can't" do always-online per se, but I'm on the road a lot for work and other things, and planes, airports, even some hotels, it just isn't worth the hassle of getting connected at a lot of those places even if the option is there (and a lot of times the connections offered in those places is really poor). I rarely PC game at my house, for whatever reason...mostly because I use it as a time-spender while I have nothing else I can be doing, I guess.

I played for six hours straight this morning/afternoon before the servers finally booted me. I did lose a little bit of work, but it was only 1-2 "sim days."

GF had some trouble logging in initially, but has been playing now for the last couple hours with no issue.

We're both playing on Private, don't know if that matters. But I guess we've been lucky.

All that being said, I really enjoyed playing it today. I can't remember the last time I played a video game for six hours straight lol, lost complete track of time because I was having so much fun.

They'll figure out the server issues, just stick with it and enjoy it once it works.

It's funny, if not for the server issues, I'm seeing a lot of positive stuff for this game.

I think I am glad I held off though. Will pick it up later. Wonder if they do decide to have an offline mode at some point?

As someone who shares his frustration, I am actually glad he went off like that.

It IS a REALLY fun game, once you get in. I've got my city pretty much maxed out in terms of layout. Now, it's a matter of upgrading the density of my zones and expanding my city's population. So far, so good.

The problem I'm having now is that the city I spent the most amount of time on is on North American East 2, and I can't get back into that server now.

Kluwe is actually very smart, but also very opinionated and very vocal.

As to SimCity, this debacle of a launch will keep me from buying the game anytime soon. I'll stick with SC3KU until the game is more useable, if I ever purchase this new one at all.

How can you disagree with any of this? I gave EA $60 for what? It's not like where in Madden where people bitch about the gameplay, I have yet to be able to play 15 minutes of this game.

Not only do you test servers, but you can also gain users you might not have gained previously by providing an "demo" of sorts.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but they had a free BF3 beta that anyone could download and the BF3 launch still had issues.

As much as I am enjoying EA potentially falling flat on its face with this launch, this fits the typical first week of servers for a game launch (at least from my experience with console games):
                    1) The first 2-3 days are unplayable
                    2) Thursday/Friday it starts getting stable
                    3) Weekend hits and the servers get smacked down some more
                    4) A week after launch everything starts working normally.

If you already paid for it and you really enjoy what you have seen so far, at least give it till next Tuesday before you throw in the towel.

This is going to damage the brand in a lot of people's minds - it was always easier to think of this more as a Maxis title than an EA one (and the negative stigma attached to that name). Now...not so much.

Ten years passed since the last real Simcity game (not Societies) - all they would have had to say is "hey, we're making another one" and it probably would have sold.
Good point. However, I think once Spore failed to meet expectations (EA posted a 1 billion dollar loss that year) and Will Wright left, EA decided to assimilate the Maxis we know and love - to the EA we love to hate.

The biggest difference however is that you CAN play those games offline. So if the online is bad, you still could play the game. With this, you can't play PERIOD. So it really isn't typical.

If you want a good laugh, google Simcity and read the news: ABC news, Forbes, The Detroit Free Press, Examiner.com, every Gaming site, PC World, PC Magazine, The Consumerist, and The USA Today have all slammed EA.

I feel like this is such a disaster, DRM online requirements will be scrapped in the near future.

I think always online is the video game future that some companys will really want. It worked in away for Blizzard with Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3.

SC2's launch went fine IMO, but it wasn't truly "always online". D3 was, and it was a complete disaster. I stil hesitate to say this is worse, because I think it was 2 or 3 days after launch before I could even log into D3. Server issues, nerfed features and all, I've still been able to play Simcity several times since the launch.
