I agree. The amount of depth here is staggering. You start out playing "wrong", there's no two ways to say it. I don't know anybody who hadn't read about the game first that didn't hop in and start hacking zombie heads and running them over with cars. Hell, I got that achievement for 10 zombie hordes destroyed in 1 day (with a car, no less).
After I started running out of cars, and how long it takes to repair them, I changed tactics. Silently scavenging for resources, setting up outposts (although I'm not quite sure what that actually helped, as I still have zombies wandering through them), and generally just building a stash of massive amounts of building materials, food, medicine, etc. I'm systematically clearing every building I can find, radioing for scavengers when I get too full, and driving AROUND zombies instead of through them since I'm running low on functioning cars.
I learned to always keep a few firebombs on hand for Big B*stards, and am genuinely feeling like I'm figuring out how to survive in this world. I LOVE that they just throw you in it without any instructions. I forget your dude you rescue at the beginning's name--but holy crap is he a badass once you level up that spinning roundhouse kick. A single-target attack guaranteed to knock them down? I've taken out entire hordes on foot with that guy just Bruce Lee-ing it. Kick, LB+Y to finish them. Dodge with B, another kick, another finisher.
But if I ever get to a moment like that, I already massively screwed up to begin with. Love this game.
