It sounds like I lack any real understanding of how procedural generation works in games like this. My first thought was that save files would be enormous as it would be constantly expanding based on the numbers used to generate the content around you at the time and the content you already left behind but yeah, I have no idea how this all works.

    6GB, 16GB, 60GB, doesn't matter. I can't wait to explore to my hearts content.

Your save files should essentially be notepad files with numbers on them.

I don't know if that's a fair way to say it, but nothing is really being saved but numbers that the game understands means "this graphic."

I feel this is one of two camps people will be divided into when the game comes out. Definitely seems like a game that will be widely polarized as far as reactions.

I think the majority of people will either be bored within an hour or so, or, will be thrilled by the exploration and invest hundreds of hours looking under every rock on every planet

You could have a number like this:

          5412312182730121

5 is the size of the planet, 4 is the max species size, 1 is the weather type, 2 is the hazard type, 31 is the gravity, 2182 corresponds to the dominant type of species (and each species type could be indicative of the types of subspecies, food, and environment) 73 the type of alien presence 0121 the mineral/resource allocation.

Now your save file might have 2000 of those numbers, in case you play offline. And some data about your character. The client takes those and renders them (generating them as your personal lobby encounters them).

Maybe makes a little more sense? Because the geography isn't retained, saves files should be a lot less expensive and is why the game client itself is relatively small.

            Re: No Man's Sky

I've seen a lot of people get a little worried about the sizes of games. It usually has no bearing on the product.

Like others have said, the game is small because of the procedural generation. It shouldn't be taken as an indication of game quality.

What you do to planets is retained, but only by you. If you end up near someone, you will be placed in the same lobby so anything each of you do is shared and saved among you.

You aren't saving giant 3d meshes of each planet, just the randomly generated numbers used to create them, then you have to save the alterations.

That was y understanding as well. You are also able to name planets and wildlife as well that saves server side, correct?

You can name the planet if you're the first person to discover it.

That is what I thought. I seen pics where it showed 'Discovered by [gamertag]'. Was not sure if I seen them for the wildlife as well.

I believe so? Or maybe I just assumed named species would be server side because of named planets.

Just looked it up... apparently they all have something similar to a 'latin name' based off the specie type/variant that is more prominent... but you can still name them.

No Man's Sky: Name your own dinosaur, get eaten by it

So, without explicit goals or narrative, and without connecting with friends, what do you actually do in this universe? One possible avenue, says Murray, is to become a botanist or a zoologist of sorts, cataloging and naming flora and fauna. Upon discovering a new planet, animal or plant, it's uploaded to the servers. The next person to come across said planet, animal or plant will see that you discovered it. If you encounter a dinosaur and decide to name it "Awesomesaurus," every subsequent explorer will know that you discovered and named it first. Incidentally, each animal and plant gets a "Latin name," which is displayed much more prominently than the player-designated name, "because we know that you're going to call it 'Penis Monster' or whatever," says Murray. "We just don't want the whole universe to become filled with penis monsters."
Seems to list the names of specie types in the Wiki.
