I'm back...hopefully. Won a XB1 Elite from a work-related online seminar. Already have one of those so I'm going to return/sell it and pickup a new graphics card and XCOM2!

I bumped up from Veteran to Commander difficulty. Just lost my first 2 guys about 10 missions in, one was my fault, the other was on a rooftop, half cover and got taken out by an officer on the ground. The guy on the roof was one of my top rangers, I was using Mark Nauta's ( the guy who's responsible for balancing the game) character from Firaxis.

The other guy I lost Was Christoper Odd, aka Mr. Odd, a YouTube let's play guy who is really good, I recommend watching his vids. He plays Legendary Ironman and really makes it look easy.

Another f'n surprise deals havock on my game. Word of advice, don't try to slash a muton. Especially not with your senior ranking ranger.

Just ran into my first sectopod...I lost a captain ranger, a captain grenadier and a corporal grenadier.

I had a VIP mission where the VIP and two of my soldiers were one square away from being able to evac on the last turn. There went my last mimic beacon along with my best specialist. And my only psi operative. This was after the hacking mission where I aborted but couldn't get my fully promoted sniper to the evac because he got acid bombed and had restricted movement. I did laugh watching him try to run the gauntlet of about 10 overwatch enemies though. Bless his heart.

This playthrough went from looking like a win to looking like a series of upcoming suicide missions. Hopefully a mission to reclaim that specialist (and mimic beacon) pops.

Are there missions to save/rescue captured soldiers?

Yes, a VIP mission can pop to get back a soldier that was captured. And I'm almost certain you get back any items they had on them as well, but I'm not 100% on that.

Wow. I didn't know that. Would be nice to have a shot to get Steve Rogers back after I left him on a VIP extract mission because I was a bonehead and he ended up one square short of an evac when I could have blown up the LZ and had it re-position to where he could have made it.

That's awesome, I almost want to leave someone behind during a mission now just to do a rescure mission.

And there's something that I just learned.

Yeah its a random placement but its effective when the LZ is on the second or third floor. I just happened to have pulled everyone out before seeing he was one block short.

I got a VIP mission once where an enemy group's spawn was on the original LZ way across the map out of sight. Got a message that the LZ was compromised and they gave me a new LZ within a single move of the police van. So I just moved everyone to the LZ, hacked the door remotely, moved the VIP to the LZ, and left. Triggered one group of 3 enemies that didn't even get a turn. I considered that repayment for all the **** this game throws at you.

I would have as well. Any RNG benefit it gives me I'm taking no matter how cheap it feels. Because to your point there are those moments like the retaliation mission it gave me with a procedural map that had me on an island having to run across a 6 square wide river just to get to the mainland where a double pod pop awaited me. Meanwhile the aliens are popping civies at 2 per turn.

Still inching my way to victory. Learned that if you start the countdown again, it goes back to the default total time, not the time that was left when I first triggered the countdown. Had a VIP mission where I lost 4 guys and the aliens somehow filled 4-5 Avatar slots very very quickly.

Sidenote, I really like that all the aliens are never obsoleted. In XCOM 1 towards the end of the game, I started missing the little Sectoid guys.

cost me $200 in gift cards and most of the morning in setup, but I am playing XCOM2!
