    Re: Red Dead Redemption 2

I'm still fairly early in the story, middle of chapter 2 I guess, and I really like Arthur's character and his demeanor.

But after finding a certain Mr. John Marston to be my favorite videogame character of all-time after RDR1, (very minor, but just in case)
    Spoiler

I'm taking my sweet time with this game and have no desire to rush or spoil the ending by reading ahead, but damn I am really looking forward to finding out what happens in this universe that lead us to what was a masterpiece in RDR 1.

Yeah, don't worry on this point. Felt similarly myself, was not disappointed in the end. Enjoy the ride.

I finally finished the main story. What a ride. Even knowing how things unfolded I still found myself in my feels. Arthur is a great character. I wasn't super feeling him at first but by the end he's my guy. I also feel like they wrapped things up perfectly. If this is the end of this series I'd be satisfied. It's a hell of a ride.

In 2021 there were about 31.7 million whitetails and 3.5 million mule and blacktail deer. Use the drop

I meant to reply to this when you posted it. The game takes place in 1899, yet deer are every 5 feet in this game. I get that they didn't want to make this a complete sim and make you sit all day to get a deer, but I really do wish the deer and turkey were scaled back a bit. I don't mind seeing rabbits and all those little critters everywhere because I see that many in real life daily, but the number of deer, elk, and moose in this game is insane. I'd like to see the number that spawns toned down quite a bit, but see an increase in pelt qualities to balance it some.

You'd also think with the number of coyotes you see in game that there wouldn't be so many rabbits, but I guess there are so many rabbits those coyotes are eating good and their babies are too.

The amount of deer don't bother me because where I live I see a ton of deer and turkey everyday. If anything the perfect pelt requirement need to go. I also have a lot of coyotes and rabbits around me too. So that is normal for me.

I see deer most days of the week somewhere around my house. We used to get them in the front yard until we got our Great Pyrenees.

I get why the pelt thing bothers people, but I think that system is more of a way to ensure people actually try for clean kills, instead of putting 5 holes in a deer or a shotgun to a squirrel and calling it a day.

I think they could stand to have all pelts start as a 3* and degrade based on how you get the kill, for the sake of the videogame. I don't hunt IRL so I don't know if the same species of animal has the same quality pelt, so I'm not sure how valid the mechanic of having some animals start as lower quality is.

As it is now, I just try to imagine that a 1 or 2 star (before I ever shoot), had just run through a mudpuddle or something. If a shot I take brings a 3 star down to two or 1, that's on me for not getting a clean kill.

All in all though I don't have much issue with finding/killing 3* though, using all of the tools I have at my disposal (correct weapon, studying, tracking).

I spent hours hunting in the wilderness last night and I have to say I’m finding it incredibly fun. The wildlife in general is pretty amazing.

                            For example:

Last night I shot and killed a fox. It was, “pristine,” but when I went up pick it up it was only, “good (two stars).” I must have used the wrong weapon or missed my shot. So I left it there and went back to my spot where I was waiting to hopefully find a badger.

I waited and waited, and just watched the wildlife. I was amazed when vultures and ravens started sweeping in to pick at the fox, pretty cool I though. After hours I noticed the fox looked different and as many of us probably already know, the body was stating to decay. I stayed in the area hunting for a few days, all the while different animals would come by and pick at the fox.

Finally a coyote paid a visit and by the end of my hunting trip the fox was noting more than bones, which was just so amazing.

That was probably the highlight but there were many other cool things that happened in the 4-5 hours I spent last night just hunting. I was camped on a rock overlooking a stream and I heard some rustling behind me (surround sound is awesome), so I slowly turn and it’s a huge buck probably 10 yards away. I wasn’t hunting for deer so I just watched him, remains still. After about a minute or so I hear some kind of beast hurling toward me, I turned to my left and a wild boar was running and nearly tramples me. I literally yell as it scared the crap out of me. I was so in the moment watching that deer and hunting it was as if I had forgotten I was even playing a game.

Few games (if any) have ever delivered this kind of experience. I continue to be blown away by Red Dead Redemption 2.
