Story/characters and overall rating are in the spoiler tag. Do NOT read if you haven't completed the game.

    VISUALS - 10/10 (superb)
Not much needs to be said here. Outside of some pop-in, the entire game looks amazing with great detail and animation.

    AUDIO - 10/10 (superb)
Excellent sound effects, voice acting and music.

GAMEPLAY and COMBAT - 9.0/10 (excellent)
Loved the combat. Especially melee which is brutal, visceral and in your face. Perfect for me. Stealth was great but they should have added more stealth kill animations. Gunplay is good. Some weapons better than others. Felt clunky and stiff at times. Upgrading your character is good but I wasn't happy that the abilities are spread out. For example, I had to upgrade Listen Mode at least twice to get to the upgrade I wanted which was annoying because I don't use Listen Mode. Enemy AI was overall excellent. Companion/Partner AI was fine at best. If anything, they were in the way most of the time. Worst part is that the Enemy AI still does NOT detect your companion/partner just like in the first game. Level design and enemy encounters were great for the vast majority of the game. Good action sequences. Going prone and being able to shoot and dodge while on the ground was definitely good. Underwater sections and puzzles were very good overall. A few good jump scares actually got me which is extremely rare. Pacing was great at times but also poor at times. Game went too long though in my opinion.

    Spoiler
Your explanation in the spoiler sums the game up perfectly.

I didn't force myself to continue on. I wanted to see the conclusion of what turn out to be a bad, poorly developed story.

Re: The Last of Us Part 2 (PS4)

Obviously, my rating system is different than the vast majority of critics and gamers. I used a simple overall rating for last generation but starting in 2014, I didn't like that idea for this generation because im not accurately judging the game based on all the aspects in the game which is why I decided to change to a category rating system.

This way, I can't overrate or underrate a game unless I literally just love it completely which has happened but is rare. Everyone rates games based on how they feel about the game. If this was last generation, TLOUP2 would have been a 7.0/10 at best but that wouldn't be fair or accurate because so many aspects of the game are superb. They just are.

It's that one aspect that brought the entire game down for me but yet, my rating still shows that it's a great overall game but it depends on what you're looking for. I'm a gameplay and combat gamer first and foremost. Other aspects can be lacking but if im loving the gameplay and combat which in turn means that im loving playing the game then I will continue playing the game and see it through to the end.

A game like The Division 2 is a perfect example. I gave the story and characters a 7.0/10. It's good for what the game is and better than the first game but not great. It's everything else that makes it good such as the locations you go to for those story missions. Plus, the gameplay and combat was an easy 9.0/10 for me so that's a huge plus especially if it's a long game which The Division 2 is.

I will be slightly evolving my rating system for next generation to where I use half point increments for all the categories as opposed to the whole number increments I have done for this generation.

I try to be as fair and impartial as possible but at the same time, if the gameplay and combat hits for me, chances are that I will like and enjoy the game much more as opposed to it being average or clunky.

Just wanted to clarify how I rate my completed games for those interested.

Great game, I had fun playing it, but I just REALLY cant embrace the story. I just did not like it at all pretty much.

            Oh wow. Thanks. Appreciate it.

Overall, it's a great game and for the most part, I had fun playing it as well but the story and characters simply never ever clicked for me outside of Ellie and even then, nowhere near as much as the first game.

I was going to go further in depth on my thoughts of this game, but this review does it for me perfectly. There are spoilers so if you haven't finished the game don't watch. I actually started a second play through yesterday thinking I must be missing something , maybe I need to give the game another chance. No I don't, for me this game is a slap in the face for those who loved the first game.

I guess I didnt LOVE the first like you guys. I liked it but I mean it was just a typical survival horror with decent gameplay.. super linear. I obviously dont get it and that's ok. I still think this game is a masterpiece for survival horror.

There really is no reason the need to explain why it's not great or what not. Some will hate it and I think by now, many know why. Others will love it, as I'm learning why as I play.

In a way, I think this disparity is kind of cool. The controversy itself has already made the game legendary in terms of immediate sales and hot debate. Naughty Dog is probably loving it

I finished the game last night and I'm still where I was about halfway though it which is a solid 9. They could have mailed it in and copied LoU1s story in a different location and the game still would have been good. I like that they took some risks. Even after reading the spoilers I still felt the emotion of the moments. I do think 4 or 5 hours could have been saved with cutscenes instead of gameplay, it felt like a drag at times. I understood the motives behind the antagonists actions and it made them more layered as opposed to the generic one note and forgettable bad for being bad villains like in Uncharted. I'm not surprised that the internet outrage machine was point blank wrong about the "controversial" character and political agenda and stuff. The ending was brutal but I think I got the full scale message. I enjoyed the emotional journey the game took me on. Now I'm off to knock out Quantum Break and Hellblade on the Xbox.
