Re: The Last of Us Part 2 (PS4)
Well at the moment I've taken it slow and in Seattle. My holy **** moment was ruined because I had to stick my big nose in areas I shouldn't have. I'm immersed in this dangerous world with the unknowns and hopefully unexpected horrors I come across. I'm still learning the two protagonists personalities and who they are now.
Spoiler
That part where Abbey had to make that dash prior to the clubbing and where she meets up with the Miller's escaping the horde was a masterful moment of horror and suspense with that gate leaning back and all. Then it takes you right to that holy **** moment and your emotions are all over the place. As for me, I'm loving this world of ****. Disneyland is still not welcomed here.

Re: The Last of Us Part 2 (PS4)
Finished it today, took a little over 30 hours on my play through.
Honestly not sure how I feel yet, with TLOU I knew immediately upon finishing it that I loved the game and it is still one of my favorite games of all time. With this one I legitimately don’t know if I liked it or disliked it yet, definitely had aspects I both liked and disliked, I’ll have to think about it some more before I decide how I feel.Favorite Teams:

Re: The Last of Us Part 2 (PS4)
Finally completed TLOUP2 in 44 hours, 10 minutes. Played on Moderate difficulty with the AI settings as is. Enhanced Dodge on. Weapon Sway off. Damage/Enemy Indicators off. Motion Blur/Camera Shake set at 0. Field of View/Camera Distance set at 5. Camera/Aim Assist off/0. Lock on Aim/Strength off/0. Hints/Dodge Prompt off. Full Screen Effects off. Sensitivity was set to 3. Pretty much everything else stayed at default. Only used Listen Mode once which was during the tutorial. Never used it again.
Story/characters and overall rating are in the spoiler tag. Do NOT read if you haven't completed the game.
VISUALS - 10/10 (superb)
Not much needs to be said here. Outside of some pop-in, the entire game looks amazing with great detail and animation.
AUDIO - 10/10 (superb)
Excellent sound effects, voice acting and music.
GAMEPLAY and COMBAT - 9.0/10 (excellent)
Loved the combat. Especially melee which is brutal, visceral and in your face. Perfect for me. Stealth was great but they should have added more stealth kill animations. Gunplay is good. Some weapons better than others. Felt clunky and stiff at times. Upgrading your character is good but I wasn't happy that the abilities are spread out. For example, I had to upgrade Listen Mode at least twice to get to the upgrade I wanted which was annoying because I don't use Listen Mode. Enemy AI was overall excellent. Companion/Partner AI was fine at best. If anything, they were in the way most of the time. Worst part is that the Enemy AI still does NOT detect your companion/partner just like in the first game. Level design and enemy encounters were great for the vast majority of the game. Good action sequences. Going prone and being able to shoot and dodge while on the ground was definitely good. Underwater sections and puzzles were very good overall. A few good jump scares actually got me which is extremely rare. Pacing was great at times but also poor at times. Game went too long though in my opinion.

STORY and CHARACTERS - 5.0/10 (average)
I will start a few hours into the game with the segment where Joel is killed is horribly done because even if you believe that Abby and Joel just happen to run into each other, the rest makes no sense. Joel (and Tommy) would not spill their guts to strangers they don't know and to go back with Abby was even more mind boggling. It simply doesn't fit the Joel character based on the first game. Biggest issue I have though is the way Joel gets killed. You never play as him, you don't fight Abby and he goes out horribly. Simply, Abby didn't earn the right to kill Joel from a character standpoint. He basically kills himself by going with her back to that cabin. This could have been done so much better and yet, it wasn't. Also, Abby lets Tommy and Ellie live. Why? This makes no sense because no one is going to do that.
The Ellie/Dina relationship and Dina being pregnant was more like a soap opera than anything. Character wise, Dina and Jesse are solid. Not bad but not great either. And of course, Jesse dies halfway through the game. SMH. None of the characters on either side really ever develop or get to the point to where you have an attachment to any of them. It's not that they were bad, they're just not memorable.
The flashbacks were cool but after Joel's death, seem to be out of place. These would have meant more if Joel was still alive when you actually play them and if Joel would have died after playing them.
Now, we get to the biggest complaint I have in the game - ABBY. You can't introduce a new character to me by having her kill Joel and then later on, force me to play as her while she pets dogs and try to come across as likeable even though it's all forced and not natural. Abby has no charisma, isn't interesting and at the end of the day, I just don't care about this character. Abby is basically a female bodybuilder. Fine, whatever but did we really need to see her topless in a sex scene? It's out of place, doesn't add anything to the game and quite honestly, is cringe worthy. Why developers put sex scenes in games, I will never know. Then for the second half of the game, we get to play as her which outside of the melee combat is simply dull and boring because I don't care about this character.
All the other characters like Owen, Nora, Mel, Manny, Lev and Yara were the same as Dina, Tommy and Jesse, fine for what they are but being separated into halves, they all simply never come together, at least for me
anyway. In general, the writing was fine. I wouldn't say it was bad but not good either. The story and characters simply didn't connect with me. Maybe if they would have done Seattle Day One with Ellie, then Abby and then move on to Day Two with flashbacks here and there along with Joel's death being done much better, perhaps I would have enjoyed it but sadly, I just didn't.
The revenge also never happens after the Joel segment. It's all about Abby and Ellie. As Abby, you let Ellie and Dina live while at the end as Ellie, you let Abby and Lev live. So what the hell was the point? If you're going to let
them live, there's no point in going after them in the first place. Too many false endings. Game seems to drag on way too long. You feel like it's going to end and it just doesn't.
The ending is beyond horrible. Again, the ending sees Abby live and leave with Lev while Ellie loses half of two fingers, Dina and Dina's son. She basically loses what should be most important to her but isn't. I did not like fighting Ellie as Abby because I don't want to play as Abby or fight/kill Ellie. The ending fight in the water was cool but the actual ending, not so much.
The groups in the game were good though. Not as fleshed out as they perhaps should have been but I enjoyed fighting the WLF, the Scars and all the Infected. There's another group at the end which is fine but not enough time in the game to see how they really are as a group and what their purpose is.
In conclusion, if this was it's own game, I would have probably enjoyed the story and characters more because there would be no history, no connection, no interest but as a sequel to what was my 360/PS3 game of the generation with an amazing story and characters that I loved, not so much. It's simply very disappointing in this aspect while everything else is top notch or very close to it.
OVERALL - 8.5/10 (great)
TLOUP2 is great for pretty much everything except for what was most important to me with this franchise - the characters and the overall story. I rate games that I complete on a category basis using a whole number 0-10 scale, add them up and then divide by 4 (or 5 if it was a wide linear/open world game). In conclusion, I played TLOU three times (once on PS3 and twice on PS4 with the remaster) but I can guarantee that I will never ever play TLOUP2 again.Comment

Re: The Last of Us Part 2 (PS4)
I've seen this criticism from those who have finished or have started and it's really annoying...as if it's a personal grievance vs. a plot hole:
*Spoilers for the Jackson chapter*
SpoilerAll the talk of Joel and Tommy revealing themselves to Abby and her group as being out of character...when they are attacked at the ski lodge the brothers are constantly yelling at each other while we run around as Abby. They couldn't just call themselves Tom and Eric in the chalet.
And to blunt the "but but they've been through so much" response it would be insane for them to keep up the charade when their lives are in danger with the infected swarm. No matter how professional they were.
I get it, you don't like the game, you have issues with some nebulous "agenda" from the director and devs, but let's be intellectually honest with each other.

Re: The Last of Us Part 2 (PS4)
Story specifics below...
Spoiler
I didn't watch any videos, screens, trailers, previews, etc. beforehand. I heard there was some controversy from some leaks but that's all I knew. Glad i did that so everything was a surprise. Shocking to me that the whole controversy about pushing a political agenda was having a lesbian character and having a trans character in the game. I don't see how either was out of place or forced in there at all.
Putting that aside...
I get the disappointment if you were hoping for more Joel and Ellie vs. the world. They certainly went in a different direction. The reaction to this game reminds me of the reaction to season 2 of The Wire. In The Wire people loved season 1, an awesome story about the cops vs. the drug dealers. In season 2, they moved away from that, made the cops vs. the drug dealers only part of the story, and introduced other characters and aspects of the world. People were pissed as they wanted more of the characters they had grown used to, but in the end it allowed them to touch on a lot more stuff and be more of a multi-faceted story.
I remember when this game was announced people were happy, but it was also a little surprising as the Joel-Ellie story didn't really need a sequel. So while I'm sure they could have wrote something focused on the two of them I'm glad they looked at other stuff going on in the world they created.
Showing the other perspective, how Joel killed a lot of people who were just trying to save the world. Maybe in his mind good reasons, but still causing a lot of damage directly and indirectly. While my initial thought was it was tough playing as Abby after what happened by the end it showed that there wasn't a clear cut good guy and bad guy. I thought it worked perfectly the way they did it, making you think of her as the villian and hate her when you first controlled her, but by the end I sympathized with her much more. Thought it was way more powerful this way than if you had given her whole backstory first. By the end it was a bit confusing as I didn't really know who to root for, but I think that was the point.
As far as the criticism of Joel's death, I had no problem with it- 1. It was I think 4 years later after the first game. He was no longer smugglng one girl across the country, but was living with an organized group years later. Completely different situation from the first game, so it makes perfect sense to me that he'd act differently and be more open. And 2. Its a dangerous world, nobody is a superhero, I dont think anyone needs some huge buildup to their death. It makes sense to show that they are putting their lives on the line everytime they go out to do a routine sweep.
I really enjoyed the expansion of the story and looking more at what the world was like. Minor criticisms and questions would be...
-Thought the switching back and forth between present and past was a little overdone and could be hard to follow at times
-Maybe I'm wrong but didn't really think having a big farm and living in domestic bliss was an option in this world, but Ellie and Dina pulled it off.
-They did cram a lot in there. Maybe make the game a little longer and add some time with the scars to sympathize with those characters? Not sure..

Re: The Last of Us Part 2 (PS4)
Gameplay wise, awesome again. Graphically looked good, some scenes spectacular. Sound was great, so intense every step of the way. So much good about the game, even if you didn't love the story, don't get the overally negative reactions some people have said. "4/10...I mean I finished a 25-30 hour game in 3 days but 4/10" lol Story, I can nitpick some pacing, but I really liked it.

I have been wanting to say what you just said for a few days. The finish the game quick but give it a 4/10. Don't want to offend but that makes no sense.. if I finish a game its cause I enjoyed it and the GAMEPLAY kept me engaged. I have literally never finished a game I didnt enjoy.. I mean I've probably finished 4 to 5 games at most in the whole ps4 era.

I’ve beaten every game I’ve played so I’m not sure how what you said makes sense?
Maybe for some they liked the game until the ending since the ending isn’t the greatest.

Spoiler expanding on aspects I disliked about the game, don’t read unless you’ve beat the game.
Spoiler
They shouldn’t have been in a position to out themselves to her group because I don’t think they would have gone to that group and put themselves in a potentially perilous situation. They patrol that entire region, wouldn’t it make more sense to go anywhere else that they have previously cleared, going into a situation with a group where you will be outnumbered seems unnecessarily risky and it played out as you would expect. That’s not even a big gripe for me though, maybe they did become comfortable during their time in Jackson and they did learn to trust quickly, I can overlook it.
I didn’t like the whole play as Abby part, I feel Peter nailed that aspect in his recap, never got into playing as her and at parts especially near the end when I’m beating Ellie as her I just didn’t like it. The fact you spend more time playing in this as Abby than Ellie I was not a fan of at all.
Abby being forced into a major part of the game was pretty much the singular reason I rate it about a 7-7.5/10, not a bad game by any means but wasn’t close to part 1. The part of the game I was playing as Abby I just wanted it to be over so I could get back to the Ellie side since I’ve been waiting 7 or however many years it’s been to see how her and Joel’s story continued but it just kept going and going.
Love the graphics, love the gameplay, I just wish so much of it wasn’t as Abby. No nebulous agenda, I just wasn’t all that immersed in the time I played as her, I took tons of time and was completely into the game as Ellie, I definitely rushed a lot of it as Abby just to get it over with. Still got 30 hours out of it so I didn’t hate it I just didn’t love it like I did the original.Last edited by IlliniM1ke; 06-27-2020, 02:39 AM.Favorite Teams:

Seemed like they forced themselves to sit through a 4/10 game. Even games you didnt enjoy at all? That really doesnt make sense to me but its fine.
