I will most certainly be trying this game out. We should get together in game when it comes out and get in the same linkshell. MMOs are where I spend most of my free gaming time.

One thing I would hope that has changed in this series is more questing ( ala WoW or EQ2 ) versus sitting in the same spot for hours at a time grinding exp. Really liked the subjob system and storyline FF11 had going for it.

Post some beta impressions when you find them.

While I really enjoyed aspects of FF11, there are some that I probably wont be able to tolerate this time around.

The biggest issue I had was the nonstop grinding for experience, with the token mission thrown in here or there.

For example ( and its been years since Ive played , so I may get something wrong )...

1-10 was nothing more than birds, mushrooms, and crawlers.
10-20 was Crabs and Gobs non stop in the Valk Dunes
20-30 was non stop mushrooms in Yhoater / yuhtunga jungle area
30-40 was non stop bats in Garg Citadel
40-50 was non stop crawlers back in Crawlers Nest
50-60 back to more crawlers in the Boyadha tree or whatever
60-70 more darn crabs in the area that looked just like valk dunes ( dont remember the name )

This was the only viable method of lvling since this is where everyone went, and with the exception to the beastmaster or red mage, no classes could solo for exp.

Missons were very well done and the subjob system was nice, but killing the same repetitive mobs over the course of 70 lvls was terrible and I will not do that again.

Square has already said that the grind won't be there like it was in XI which has become notorious for its level grinding. Quests are the name of the game in XIV.

Speaking of FFXI, they just announced the level cap going from 75 to 99. Insane.

That is a big jump. With the level grind in FFXI, I thought it'd jump from 75-80..

                  Re: Final Fantasy XIV (PS3/PC)

I am without a doubt getting FFXIV. It's the whole reason I bought a PS3. I was in one of the well known and successful linkshells on Midgardsormr server on FFXI and am looking to get as much of my LS as possible together for FFXIV.

There's alot of info been coming out the last few days about the classes and battle system.

                  - First, give us an overall image of battles in FFXIV.
Okada: Players can fight in parties or go solo in FFXIV, but the monsters can be in parties as well. There will be battles where it is "party vs. party." Battles won't be fought by pulling enemies back to a set camp, but rather we are envisioning players moving about as they fight. [Elmer Point: think nomad camp style]

                    - What type of players are these 9 classes geared towards?
A: The basic ideas each class encompasses are as follows:
Gladiator: The hero who wants to protect the weak. The party's great protector. The all-purpose melee.
Pugilist: The fighter on the front lines. The thrill of thinking on your feet and switching stances. The vanguard attacker. For players who love paying attention to the details of battle.
Lancer: Using range to your advantage. Requires good judgment of battle conditions. The party's last resort in a pinch. For people who enjoy the tactical side of battles.
Marauder: A macho attacker with massive power. The party's trump card. For people who love waiting for the perfect opening to strike.
Archer: A sniper who plays it cool, aiming for the perfect shot. The party's shortstop. The lone wolf.
Conjurer: Party support that can change between attack, defense and healing based on the situation. For players who want to do it all.
Thaumaturge: The party strategist, who controls the battlefield through manipulation of status effects. For people who enjoy deep strategy.
Miner: A Disciple of the Land, who deals in metals but cannot wear most equipment. For those who want to get rich quick, and enjoy the labor it takes to do so.
Blacksmith: Uses metals to craft weapons and armor. Requires training. For those who enjoy doing business and dealing with customers.

Has there been any word about Subscription Fees? I hope they don't go that route, but I am guessing that they will.

Oh, there is no doubt this will be a subscription based game. Most likely it will be $15 a month just like all the other major MMOs. Well worth it imo , since this is the genre I play the most.

Easy to pick up a game for $60 and get 10-20 hours of playtime in and I feel like I wasted my money, while I can get a game that gives me 4-5 years of playtime for only $15 a month.

Why won't my embedding work? Just shows a bunch of code and won't actually embed.

There's a whole race of Shantotto's kind in FFXI (Tarutaru) and FFXIV (Lalafell). I was almost one in XI until deciding against it and with with my hume..
