I'm still considering getting this, but it would be competing with some pretty stiff competition for my gaming time - Starcraft II and Civilization 5.
Turns out to be $12.99 a month. MMOs have always been worth the cost of admission for me, since I get way more play time out of them than single player games.

As crazy as it sounds MMOs help me save money. I buy way less games when I'm subbing to an MMO and over the course of a year end up saving hundreds. Although really I could just give up gaming in general but thats not going to happen.

I guess SE has sent a cease and desist letter out to all the websites that had their patch mirrors set up. For those that dont know, their patcher is downright abysmal and a few patches took 10+ hrs to download.

Several people posted the patches up on Utorrent and megashare, so you could get the patch and be up and running in less than 5 minutes.

This is a terrible move since a lot of Universities dont even allow p2p downloads, which is exactly what their patcher is. I sure hope they fix their patcher very quick or else it will alienate a ton of people that had to rely on torrents and rapidshare just to get the game playing.

I read some of those stories about 9 hour waits. Glad I got mine from megaupload.

Regarding the game, I am torn between loving some parts and absolutely hating others. I enjoy that it is a different take on an MMO. I have just one character who I am to love and cherish and mold into everything instead of just saying "Next!" and making a caster or a tank. This one toon is the whole thing which is great. I also enjoy the crafting system being a big deal! People all over the place are crafting using these crazy looking machines all throughout the city. Pretty cool. That and the game looks great.

On the negative side, things that nearly every other MMO has and that I have taken for granted for since I have grown so accustomed to using them are missing. The UI is not user friendly and the chat options are probably my least favourite thing in the game. Last night when trying to chat with in game with Crimsontide I would literally have to type out /t (character first name character last name) (the message). Since I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to party up (not sure if you can unless you are side by side) I couldn't help but feel that it is sometimes easier to just not chat because of the UI.

There is some lag in cities but it is not unplayable. I've played through Warhammer, Aion, and a few other launches and this one so far is fairly good. Of course when the standard edition drops next week will be the real test.

Come over to Figaro with me and Xavier. Add After Burnerz to your social list and Ill help in anyway I can. The learning curve here is pretty steep to start off with.

Yea, I like the fact it is a new MMO and it certainly has potential I have grown tired of wow after my 6th or so 80, so this is new and fresh.

In order to respond, hit the space bar and then control-R. Hitting the space gets your cursor in the chat window, and the control R will respond to the last person that sent you a tell.

Picked this bad boy up on Friday (thank you trade-ins, first CE I've bought of anything.) I'm having fun so far -- on the Bodhum server. Phys level 13, Conjurer r11, weaver r6.

If anyone wants to play on Bodhum, send me a PM and I'll give ya my name. In a linkshell with some people who seem to have their ish together. Got lucky to find them, since I didn't have a linkshell from XI to come over with.

Me and Xavier are on the Figaro server. I kinda though we might all be able to get together since this game just released, but the few people on this thread that play decided to go a different route.

Well, it's out for us cheapskates today....

I'm not jumping yet (subscriptions are not decisions I make on a whim), but I'm definitely looking forward to some more impressions.

                          Re: Final Fantasy XIV (PS3/PC)

Well, I dont think Drakkon will be playing until March, and Xavier hasnt logged in since the night or two that I can tell. Seeing as there wasnt much interest, I decided to jump onto Besaid server because it was more populated, and the more people the better.

There is good and bad to like. I am not a fanboy of any series or publisher and call it like I see it. This game has great potential, but its a long ways away from it in its current state.

Playing with a control is a definite must. Its just set up that way and using the keyboard / mouse is clunky.

The classes are all pretty nice and its great that equiping any weapon will change you into any class....so you dont have to roll alts anymore. Being able to mix and match your skills is pretty unique too. You can make an archer than has attack buffs and can heal itself etc by multiclassing.

The content is lacking in a serious way. With the exception to the starting quest, you only get a quest at lvl 10, 20, etc...and from what I understand..you get class quests starting at 20 as well. The content is mostly like WoW dailys. Talk to quest giver, run to location, kill 3 rats, crystal spawns, click it...you won! The content is no where near on par with what FF11 had in its initial release.

The zones are massive, but I think thats a negative versus a postive. You can run around a zone for 45 mins...never hit the same spot twice...and yet it looks exactly like where you just were 100 meters back. No real terrain features, landmarks, etc to break up the monotony.

The UI is basically what kills this game. You have only 2 chat windows, but everything is spammed into them. The /shout command only works across 2 map squares, so you have no zone wide chat of any kind. So much is going through your chat window, that even if someone says something, you most likely missed it. You cant chat while crafting either, as anytime the craft window comes up...it clears you chat window.

There is no AH system. They relied on some stupid retainer system. IE...you have a char hold up to 80 item to sell. Sounds good in theory, but you summon him in a market ward...where there is already 50 toons in there selling.

There is no way to search items. You have to manually select each NPC...click browse...wait 5 secs...look at their inv...repeat x50. Market wards are an awful idea. Say you want a sheep leather..there is no way to find it other than randomally selecting NPC in hopes they have what you need.

In a nutshell....the UI is worst UI system I have seen in my entire life. Keep in mind I have played pretty much every major MMO to at least the first level cap. The UI is what will keep this game from doing well, its very frustrating trying to do even the most simple of tasks.

Content can always be added, and I feel FF11 did a good job with that. But if they dont change the UI to something at least remotely user friendly, this game will sink faster than the Titanic for most fans.

I've been pretty busy this week but honestly, because of the points crimson made above I haven't really felt like I just had to log in and play. I'll log in this weekend and play here or there but I won't continue to subscribe until there are hopefully some interface changes and additions to content. I'm just way too picky with my MMO interfaces to live with the bear bones version that FFXIV offers.

I actually switched to Besaid a while back as well. Pizza Oven, if you ever need anything. Loving my LS so far, and im phys18 marauder16 right now (with a few self-heal skills thrown in.)

I actually hit surplus/fatigue so it might slow down a few days for me, but all the better to pick up fishing. Or something.
