Re: For all you guys wanting to gain muscle, size, etc.

Yeah good stuff there. I always found it funny how people would say "DUDE how can you eat so many eggs (including yolks) every day, don't you know that saturated fat is bad for your heart and the eggs will give you high cholesterol and blood pressure!" When it reality dietry consumption of cholesterol has little to do with cholesterol levels and saturated fat isn't the baddie people make it out to be.

    Found this interesting:

Mother's milk provides a higher proportion of cholesterol than almost any other food. It also contains over 50% of its calories as fat, much of it saturated fat. Both cholesterol and saturated fat are essential for growth in babies and children, especially the development of the brain.12 Yet, the American Heart Association is now recommending a low-cholesterol, lowfat diet for children!
People have had amazing results on keto and atkins which are basically high in protein and sat fats and low in carbs. Also alot of people have had massive drops in bad cholesterol and blood pressure while consuming diets that are basically the opposite of what most government bodies recommend.

Personally i think the obesity problem is caused by continually increasing portion sizes, increased consumption of high process carbs and a reduction in overall activity levels ie calorie expenditure....

      dumbells after pushups?

Within the last two years every night I do 100 pushups and then I would do dumbells on each arm afterwards. Later I learned that I was doing it wrong and that I should do my pushups every other night. Should I do my dumbells after my pushups? before? or should I do them the day after doing pushups. Anyone here work out?

I'm glad you quoted that Jonesy because the part I'm most interested in is the disease and overall health aspect of nutrition, not just trying to get a six pack and look good at the beach. I'm glad this book discusses that as well.

How long is Stew in the cell for, I need more people to discuss this with damn it!!

Re: For all you guys wanting to gain muscle, size, etc.

I have a question for you guys. A friend of mine is just starting to train, and he's interested in taking protein shakes and various supplements. I suggested some stuff (whey)that I use and he wants to know how much (grams) he should be taking per shake.

One of my old trainer's had told me to calculate the amount by putting 2 grams of protein for every pound. I've been doing this since my teenage years and it helped, but I'm checking here, since after reading some posts, you guys know what you're talking about.

Anyways, if you guys could give me some answers, I will gladly tell my buddy.

PS. He's around 6 ft weighing in at around 160-165

Stewaat suggested to me that 30-50g of protein would be good for a shake.

Re: For all you guys wanting to gain muscle, size, etc.

Two grams is a lot, the standard is 1-1.5 of grams of protein per pound of body weight.

So if you weight 200 pounds, you should have at least 200 grams of protein each day.

Thanks for the reply. The two grams was what my trainer had told me in high school, though I was wondering since I did have a huge workout regime back then. This was an area of training that I never really looked at, I just drank my shakes and saw improvement.

Re: For all you guys wanting to gain muscle, size, etc.

From what i have heard/read your body can only absorb roughly 30 grams of protein in one sitting and any more just passes through your system and out in your urine (thus putting more stress on your kidneys which is what doctors are worried about with high protein diets). That number may be higher for body builders or people doing lots of strenous training so up it to the 30-50 gram range is probably the way to go.

I think a LOT of people who bodybuild consume way more protein then their body can actually properly use but that is fueled by the supplement companies who have people thinking if they don't drink a protein shake every 5 mins they are going to go catabolic and lose muscle mass.

Thanks for the reply. That's good to know. I guess I'll tell him to start at 30 grams per shake, then vary from 30 to 50 as he continues his daily workouts.

So him being around 160, I should tell him to consume about 160 grams (shakes and meals)?

Maybe tell him to try to get between 160-240 grams (1-1.5x bodyweight) to make sure he's covering his needs. Of course none of these things seem to be exact science but as long as he's in the right ballpark he'll do well.

Is your buddy lifting many times per week etc?

He said he'd follow a similar program like mine, which is training four times a week, with some cardio on the off days.

I'm sure that varies from person to person based on their size.

That's what I've heard from others. I know some guys going with 50 grams, some 45, some 30 per shake. I guess thats why the 30-50 range is good.

Also, another question. I'm being asked questions about Creatine. Now I've never dabbed with supplements such as these, though I've been tempted to, so I'm not sure what to tell my buddy. He wants to know how dangerous it is, and if there are in fact, any side effects. I asked a trainer last night, and he said it is fine if used correctly, twice a day, in your shake or in water. Could you guys shed some light on this?
