You can use calipers which gauge certain points on your body.
You can use a handheld device which shoots a current through your body and tells you.
You can do it in water with some sort of device
You can do it in an egg-shaped chamber (did this for college...was weird)

Personally I just gauge myself in the mirror.

    <10% is pretty ripped
11-15% is in really good shape but you have about 5-15 lbs of fat to lose before you expose all your abs
16%+ is you need to get to work...

That's just my own personal scale I use.

Just a heads up, Planet Fitness sent out some coupons to members, one of which is a 30 day membership for $3. Apparently it was supposed to be 30 days for $30 but they made a typo. I know a lot of people don't really like planet fitness, but I just thought I'd mention it. Perfect for me because I only need it for one month while I'm home from school.

Is there a startup fee though?

It's $10 a month here too, but after you pay a $40 startup fee, which is fine I guess if you are going to be a member there for a long time, but a rip off if you just want to use it for a month or two.

Anyone have any ideas on how to keep your hands warm when working out?

My bench is in the garage, and with it being <20 degrees outside the metal bar gets damn cold. I'm sure there has to be an easy way to fix that problem, but I'm having a brain fart.

god didnt create cake and bourbon. etc etc...

                man did.

stick to the foods "God" created and you'll be fine...admittedly easier said then done though, as the man made food includes things that cause you to become addicted to it.

A simple rule I like to stick by is this.

If i look at the ingredents, and I can't prononuce even one of them, or if I had a bowl full of one of them, would I get sick?

                then I dont eat it.

Although I'm addicted to DOTS the candy, but that wont be an issue soon I hope!

BTW, you should drink Raw Milk, not skim Milk. you need the fat in Milk and pasteurized milk is absolutely horrible for you.

Today was the first day of working out in the AM before go to the job. Felt really good to get a sweat going early in the AM but I'm not looking forward to the afternoon crash after lunch.

Good luck man. That is NOT an easy task by any means. Good news is you will have less people in the gym and you kick off your body's metabolism.

BTW any of you know your resting pulse?

At my physical I found out mine was 50. Basically that means I'm a well conditioned athlete...or that I suffer from Bradycardia. If I haven't been arrogant enough for you guys let me just say I'm a f'n beast.

Anyone heard about or used CLA before? Its a supplement that may speed up weight loss. Of course, you have to be eating right and be exercising as well, but it kind of looks legit. I'm just not completely trusting in supplements and was wondering if this would be worth trying?

Honestly just eat right and work out, you'll lose weight. You're 19ish I'm assuming so unless you have genetic problems you're lose weight just fine.

So I just went to the gym for the first time in, oh...about a year and half lol. Let me tell you, it kicked my ***. Here's the sad thing though, I didn't even get to lifting. I did cardio for about 30-45 minutes and was so exhausted for being so out of shape that I couldn't really go on.

Anyway, enough of my "fatassness"...do you guys usually lift first and finish with cardio? Should I just do cardio for the first days/week to get my legs and lungs back and then hit the weights or does it really matter?

Re: For all you guys wanting to gain muscle, size, etc.

I'd say the earlier you get started with the weights the better and i know exactly how you feel. I've been slacking lately and will have my first gym session tomorrow since the birth of my daughter over two months ago. I can already tell i'm going to be sore for a week but it gets easier with time. Just don't go to hard and hurt yourself with your first workout and be prepaired to have difficulty moving the day after.

What do you guys think of the idea of a "cheat meal" once every week or so?

How does this look for a daily diet?:

                                B'fast - 3 eggs, lean ham

mid morning - peice of fruit (usually an apple)

Lunch - large salad with grilled chicken breast and fat free dressing

Afternoon snack - peice of fruit (usually a bannana)

                                Post workout - protein shake

dinner - lean meat with vegetables or salad

The reason i like the fruit is that's easy to eat on the go while i'm at work and gives me a nice energy hit as well.

I'll be doing a fullbody weight session for 1 - 1.5 hours 3 x per week and doing 45-60mins cardio 5-6 days per week as well.

Should that be good enough to drop some excess body fat (i'm prob about 25-27% bf right now) and get in shape over the next 3-4 months?
