Re: You know what really grinds my gears?
I'll preface this by saying if I'm the head honchos of the nhl I wouldn't do a single thing to curb the fighting. The fighting is a part of that leagues gimmick it's part of it culture.
If they wanted to end the fighting they'd have to change the culture of their league. Your refs would have to physically stop all fights not just sit there watching the whole thing with their hands in their pockets. If a player accidentally hits a ref trying to stop a fight they're suspended, no questions asked. You ban taking off gloves while on ice, ban fights outright, eject players suspend players penalize teams etc etc etc. over time the fights would become rarer and rarer. It's not impossible to get these grown men to not punch each other. Don't pretend that it is.Comment

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?
I don't hate fighting in hockey, I actually like it, but it bugs me when there are goons on the ice with no talent and have no purpose other than to take cheap shots and pick fights. It's surprising some of these guys even know how to skate. When fights break out organically, that's edge of your seat stuff for me, but some of this planned out orchestrated crap can go.
And this is coming from a guy who loved to see Lemieux get his. So call me a hypocrite if you must, but **** that guy lolWolverines Wings Same Old Lions Tigers Pistons Erika ChristensenComment

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?
If they got rid of fighting in hockey, that would open up pandora's box. You'd have guys constantly taking runs at top-tier players the whole game and whole year. You'd have some awful 4th liner going after a superstar player because there would be no repercussions.
That's like inserting Nazr Mohammed for the sole intention to injure LeBron James in the ECF, so the Bulls could move on.
Trust me, that'll never happen.Comment

Or hockey players could not act like primitive *******s and not fight or intentionally try to injure like every other not baseball sport.Member: OS Uni Snob Association | Twitter: @MyNameIsJesseG | #WT4M | #WatchTheWorldBurn

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?
The whole enforcers protecting their star players is BS. There's plenty of players who aren't stars who are willing to drop the gloves when their teammate has been cheapshot.
It's just so ingrained in the culture that will make it hard to get rid of. They are phasing out goons for the sake of goons, but it's just bringing to light the "pest", a guy who has some talent but plays on the edge occasionally going over. Just look up Brad Marchand. He's a decent hockey player, but all his cheap shots and embellishments make him a million times more unlikeable then any goon ever was.
The NHL has a discipline problem is a main problem. It also has a lot of old school people in charge, and fighting and respect meant a little more back then (though crazy things still happened back then too).NHL - Philadelphia Flyers

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?
I think fighting in hockey is one of the stupidest things going in professional sports. I just don't understand the point in it nor why we're ok with it.
It's in the same level as intentionally beaming batters in baseball (especially beaming rookies just for the hell of it). It's dumb.
However neither if these things grind my gears, mainly because I rarely watch either sport. But if they did ban fighting in hockey I think every arguement against banning it would be inherently flawed.
It's beaning and there is no such thing as doing it to rookies just for the heck of it
It's clear you don't watch or understand it!SOS Madden League (PS4) | League Archives

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?
When people fight in hockey, it's because it's "part of the game". When they fight in basketball or football it's because they're "thugs" and have "character issues".
Right. Ooooooookay.
------------
When people watch college sports (mainly football) and their only comments on the game are about Player X and how good of a pro he'll be and how Team Y needs to draft Player X instead of comments about the game or the team as a whole. It's like the whole season is one big combine to those people. Just irks me to no end.And may thy spirit live in us, Forever LSU

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?
Actually quite a few people who fight in hockey are referred to as thugs and that exact term has been mentioned previously in this discussion several times...Last edited by kehlis; 11-14-2014, 11:14 PM.Comment
