It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.

This is a very loose relation but I have a funny thing to mention about how often I get water at restaurants/fast-food joints. This belongs more in the brain fart thread but that's okay.

Most places that allow you to self-serve your own drink has water as a tab on top of another fountain drink, so I'm mostly preconditioned to have one hand press that tab and the other have the cup down below.

However, every so often a place will have water as its own separate faucet or what have you (I've pretty much only seen this at In-N-Out), and my mind is so warped in how to use those ones that the last time I tried to use my "one hand to press, another hand to hold underneath" system.

It didn't end too pretty, because once my hand pressed down water just started pouring all over it. I inherently "forgot" that its tab is behind and underneath its faucet instead of in front and on top of it. The guy waiting behind me cracked up and asked if I needed help. Admittedly I kind of did because I couldn't recall that you're supposed to just place your cup underneath to make it work.

Anyway, back to what you said, yes that would peeve me too. It sometimes has the people giving me the cup reminding me that I can only use it for water, so it gives us water-drinkers a very heavy glare of suspicion as we work our way toward the machine. I'll of course always be an honorable and trustworthy individual being in that regard. Plus, I don't like soda.

More like "Look at all those Wal-Mart cashiers whose day you're making slightly easier because you're doing self checkout instead of joining a line of 20 people because there's only a few cashiers working"

"I don't want to bag this item" only comes up after you've scanned it or weighed though right?

Those weights are extremely specific. Good luck finding two things that weigh exactly the same as the other without being completely obvious, lol.

I always wondered how the self checkouts can tell one item from another when it comes to produce. At the various self-checkouts here you put the produce down over the scanner and it weighs it and you punch in the produce code. What's stopping someone punching in say the code for regular bananas when they have organic ones? (which cost quite a bit more) I'm sure they lose money hand over fist on organic stuff.

The money lost due to stuff like that is probably more than justified by having less cashiers.

Lets say you replace a cashier with a machine. Depending on minimum wage, lets say 12 hours of being open will save you well over $100 per cashier. If you have even a few "thefts" every hour on produce, that's probably only several dollars an hour being lost, which is less than money saved on not having an employee.

And that's just people not getting caught. I'm sure if a store realizes stuff not adding up, they'll have random checks (assuming they don't already) by the associate in charge of the self checkouts. If you see someone with lots of produce, then you might check. If you see someone with just abunch of boxes and other scanable things, you won't bother.

Sounds like you'd be a nice add for either the chair faction or the copier faction. Because you'd be happy with either. Now we just need to know what your position is on whether Hilary Swank is hot or not.

Got a call for a welfare check earlier this week on a naked white male. Arrived, rounded the corner into the courtyard of the complex and, sure enough, there stands naked white male. I ask if he's alright, he practically stares through me, then bolts in the opposite direction. I catch up, get him slowed down, eventually get him detained and listen to him scream that he's Dave Chappelle until paramedics arrive and take him for evaluation.

Just paid $20 for a carwash. Soap still all over the car. It's completely clean, just soap still on it. I'm nonconfrontational so I'll just take it back to the house and rinse.
