Re: You know what really grinds my gears?

    Such a great movie.

I caught the last 30 minutes of it.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

I just saw a TV spot for a movie that promoted it by saying: "... with a daring twist that you won't see coming."

That's why at times I try avoiding watching promos, unless in a TV shows case, it airs during the show itself (like after the final scene).

So many times it'll show something that as a fan, you're looking out for certain things instantly and will notice key details in the promo.

You watch those? See, I avoid those all the time. I bet I already posted it as a gear-grinder once. I already know I'm going to watch the next episode, so why spoil it for me?

Heck, I'm already up in arms in the "Previously on..." segments at the beginning of an episode, but not for why you think. Yes, it's true that I don't like they undermine my memory as an audience member that I can't recall what happened the week before or play catch-up quiickly, but even more so it's actually because they only bring up previous elements that will be pertinent for the upcoming episode. Sometimes they'll recall a moment that is seven episodes back, which I get we might need a re-reminder of, but now I know that: "Oh great, this is going to be important this time, isn't it?" It would be better if it was just an "In case you missed last week's episode..." segment, personally.

I didn't know what this movie was about (Antebellum or something?), so during the football game I was like "Eh whatevs," but turned around to my computer so I wouldn't see anything else. Sadly, the guy was still talking and I heard that.

All this being said, the only movie that I know of you could tell me there will be a twist ending and I'll still be completely bewildered over what the twist is was with Saw. Not only could nobody have guessed it, but it completely ****s with you when it happens too, even if you expect a twist at all.

I watch them. I like being surprised, but I still like those small teases at what's to come next week.

I won't go out of my way to watch it online or something, but if it happens to pop up at the end of the show itself, I'll watch, and then speculate like crazy on what I think could happen in that episode based on those dozen or so seconds.

And the "previously on..." scenes I hate mostly for shows where clearly most people watching remember what happened last time (Big Brother is the worst for this as they spend 3 minutes of the show on the episode recap of a show that airs 3 episodes a week!). I like those recaps on certain other shows where it does help to jog your memory a bit on a moment you forgot about and will help to make a moment in the show make more sense since you remember the past moments connecting with that.

I think I've said it in here before, and people usually think it's weird, but I seriously don't get the mindset of "spoiler alert" don't spoil anything ever, when it comes to TV or movies.

Every time I watch a long form review of a movie on Youtube (redlettermedia is a favorite) they always feel obligated to put an alert in huge letters, because for some reason people are watching a 30-45 minute review of a movie but they don't want to know what actually happens in the movie. Always cracks me up.

I avoid those until I see those movies/TV shows for myself.

But what's interesting is that I recorded myself for 20 minutes driving home to Reno just after having seen Tenet, and I can't believe that I made a 20 minute first impressions about the movie without laying down probably a single bit of content about the movie. I just talk about how melted my mind was over and over haha. I don't say a single character name, plot element, or anything. I think that's how most of my reviews tend to be in the "movies recently seen" thread, so I hope people can understand that even if I say a lot of words in a review it's really in a spoiler-free zone.

Red Letter Media has a "Half in the Bag" show where they do it also. I get not wanting to waste money on a crap movie, but I wouldn't go into a full review if it's something I really wanted to see.

Half in the Bag is hilarious.

They can sometimes get a bit spoiler-y without warning, though. I think they did for Interstellar, I can't remember. But like all other things, I would only watch it if I saw the movie for it first.

Same happens all over the place.

Someones like "dont spoil it!" while literally in the thread or discussion page about something they haven't seen yet. If you're there, it's your own fault.

And on twitter, people keep saying to stop spoiling stuff...twitter is live discussions, what are you doing there? And if you follow the page of a show you're not watching as it airs, dont get mad that the shows page is talking about the show while it airs.

By the way, my mom would definitely be posting in this thread right now, and it's completely not her fault (I guess).

So her co-worker recommends her to watch Sons of Anarchy, as she is obsessed with the show and has seen it through multiple times. My mom and I took her on her recommendation and binge-watched it throughout this year when we were together (especially during quarantine times), but each day she'd return to work and her co would ask her: "How far along are you?" To which my mom would respond, and then this moron would go ahead and ask something that she assumes she already passed, when she absolutely hadn't yet!

Now it would be one thing if this were an isolated incident or a slight brain fart. However, since then as she would ask, my mom would warn her beforehand: "But DON'T. SAY. ANYTHING." So she lets her know where she's at, and then of course Patty (that's her name) spoils something else again. This happened at least six times, no joke. My mom even got to the point where she started saying: "I'm not going to tell you because you're going to spoil something for me." "Oh no I won't I won't I promise." [tells her, gets spoiled]

There was even one time when my mom said we were going onto the last season, and Patty asks: "What did you think about [insert series ending spoiler here]?" My mom calls her out on it, and she goes: "Oooh ooh sorry I thought that happened in the season before it."

HOW IN THE BLOODY HELL DO YOU FORGET HOW THE SHOW THAT YOU'VE WATCHED SEVERAL TIMES OVER ENDS, OR CONFUSE IT WITH ANOTHER SEASON?!?!

It got so bad we now use her name as part of a verb phrase. Any time someone's possibly going to spoil something, we refer to it as "pulling a Patty." It's embarrassing how bad it got. If she spoke to me about the show, I would turn around and walk the other way, not even acknowledging her. Eventually she would probably get the message.

It's just rude. I know that knowledge is power and people are excited to divulge information or engage in conversation about something you are on the up-and-up with alongside somebody else, but you have to be absolutely positively sure about it.

I just dance around it and carry a poker face, no matter what. Hell, before showing my mom the movie Jojo Rabbit, I described it as "about young German boys during World War II who attend a Nazi training camp." Sure, that's how it starts, but I left out any nitty-gritty that even (and especially) trailers would want to get into. The tonal shift in the film and later plot revelations made it a much more exciting watch for her, and she thanked me for not saying any more about it in fact.

But yeah, you can't be mad at people giving out spoilers if you enter a certain domain about it. I just don't like how things like YouTube titles might give things away (like for TLOU 2) and you just don't have any chance at avoiding it.
