Well for contacts, it doesn't relate the same. You said prescription, which to me is the original document where the doctor says "Yes, this is what you can have/need/etc." and those usually have a limited lifespan of several months.
But the pill bottle you have, you can't just take it in. It will state on it how many refills you get and for how long. You usually can't get more than a couple of refills on the original prescription and they will only last for so long. For contacts, I'd imagine part of it is to get you to come back in, but at the same time, someone shouldn't continue wearing something that may or may be the right prescription any longer. It's the doctor erring on the side of caution so someone doesn't continually wear the same contacts for 10 years that may or may not be doing what they should any longer.
