Re: You know what really grinds my gears?

If I had the free time for it, I'd actually like to say that a life experience of mine includes being on a jury panel.

That being said, I am to be summoned next Thursday, but I am still teaching summer school at that time so I will be requesting a continuance until December if I can.

I actually did get picked to serve on an attempted murder charge the first time I went, but I learned real quick how to answer lawyer questions so they wont want me. I'm ready for another paid 'vacation', I dont know why I havent been called in the last 6 or 7 years. but I can definitely see how its not for everyone.
I've been called 5 times but never picked for a jury. So I end up just sitting there reading our listening to music for 8 hours. I'll say though, the experience was different between Charlotte and Denver. Denver had a lot more people. Probably 250 of us. Charlotte there was maybe 75. That made my experience in Charlotte more tolerable. Still hated it, but not quite as much.

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?

I kept getting jury summons sent to my parents house in New Mexico (I haven't lived there since 2001). It was a nightmare to convince them I don't actually live there. It happened twice in the last three years.

After the most recent incident, sure enough, once I was able to convince them I've been a Pennsylvania resident since 2001, I got a jury summons for here in Pittsburgh.

I've been summoned 4 times but have never been on the jury.

I wouldn't mind doing it one time I guess, just for the experience.

Jury duty needs to be for the unemployed and the retired. Let the people who are working, work. Biggest time waster sitting there for days.

                I'm presuming this is satire/sarcasm.

I do think a large majority of cases shouldn't have even gone to court. One jury I was on was a brother-sister civil suit that was extremely petty.

I got summoned back in November, 2016 but didn't have to report. It seemed like the potential jurors were allotted into pools and my pool appeared to be a later one so I guess the jury was filled by earlier pools.

I have honestly never heard anyone say "I love jury duty". How is it in any way a "paid" vacation? Most states don't pay you jack-sh*t. Even if they did pay you, it's gotta be at best some miniscule fraction of what you could otherwise be making at work. Not to mention it forces you to take PTO at most jobs these days. I'm glad there is someone out there that likes it I guess, but I would say that's a pretty good candidate for "uncommon opinions"...

No, I'm 100% on board with nemesis. It's a serious hindrance to most working people's lives, and the asked commitment is not commensurate with the recompense (which is 0 in most cases). I understand that most of us would want an actual jury of peers (which unemployed and retired aren't for most of us), but I don't consider most people that end up on juries anyway to be my "peers". As the old joke goes (which is pretty on-the-nose), juries are made up of people who couldn't get out of jury duty....

in Alabama (and 7 other states), the law is your employer has to pay you for jury duty

                        That definitely changes things!

It honestly makes sense. I mean, the point is that it shouldn't cost you money to do your civic duty.

Jury duty sucks, until you remember why it is that we have this system and what the alternative could very well be otherwise.

Yeah exactly. AND if eeeeeeverybody would just ALWAYS do their civic duties, we would never need juries anyway! Problem solved.
