Ours becomes a nervous nelly when thunder and fireworks appear. As soon as the thunder or fireworks are gone, not heard, she calms down and falls asleep. We were fortunate this year, the fireworks around the neighborhood ended at 11:50 and she was asleep after that. Some years it's been 2 or 3 in the morning fireworks (during and around the 4th of July) are going off and she prances around and can't settle until they are over with.

A few years ago, I took her for a walk on July 2nd at 9:00am in the morning. A bottle rocket appeared out of nowhere and she jumped a few feet in the air and I did as well because I wasn't expecting it. As we approached the guy that fired it off, he did apologize and let us continue without firing off another one.

My initial post wasn't a mad/ranting post, it was just understanding and finding some common ground with some other OS posters. Suddenly, it lit up like a firecracker(pun intended)
My neighbor has a dog that chases the fireworks he shoots,
almost to the point it's like he's trying to bite or eat'em.
Dog must be deaf by now.

Funny thing is the dog's name is Speedy

If he keeps that up they may have to change his name to Stumpy.

Menu screens on DVD's and Blu Rays that show every plot point of the movie before it allows you navigate past it.

For someone who hates spoilers as much as i do, this irritates me to no end.

You haven't yet learned to turn your head away as you press "Play Movie" when it shows up? I even go so far as to mute the damn thing. I agree with you one thousand percent. Just do a static image with the film title.

In the film The Big Sick, Kumail puts in a DVD for his date and says something like: "Just close your eyes cause when the menu comes up, there are some spoilers in it." It probably made me laugh more than any other line in the movie, and nobody else in the audience laughed. It's just one of those things man.

Yeah true lol. I have developed several strategies over all these years to deal with this. I do mute both the TV and the sound system, and i try preload the movie well in advance just to be sure it will be ready to push Play when the time comes. Seems like a lot of unnecessary work to watch a movie, except that it is completely (unnecessarily) necessary.

The worst one wasn't even a menu screen... I had not seen Stranger Things, and purposely avoided spoilers until i had time to see it. When I finally got the time, i got Season 1 and was ready to watch it. I put in the Blu Ray, and the first preview started (It would not allow me to skip the trailers at all, which is infuriating enough). So i was like fine whatever. A really cool-looking trailer for some Science Fiction type show came on. It looked freaking awesome. About a minute and a half into this trailer, i realized i was watching a preview for Seasons 1 AND 2 of STRANGER THINGS!! I am clearly already about to watch the very show that they are trying to convince me to watch!

In that first minute, I saw scenes from season 2 that completely ruined Season 1 plot twists for me, without even realizing what i was seeing.

I then tried fast forwarding, skipping, and even turned it off, which only caused it to start from the beginning again. I felt like i was being forced to watch this. I muted it, and I hit the info button to see how long this was, because it just kept going. This preview was about 5 minutes long! I ended up just turning the TV off and letting it play in the background for 20 minutes just to make sure. Talk about having your gears ground.. im surprised mine aren't worn completely smooth after that one.

I hate the buzz phrase "launch angle" in MLB. Trajectory is just fine, thanks.

Exit velocity is fine and has always been around (or initial velocity, but that's whatever). But not "exit velo." Let's stop trying to sexify everything in the MLB that is already plenty sexy on its own, such as the long ball. I will go berserk if I hear a youth coach or kid say any of these terms.

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?

My top two most annoying baseball terms are:

"Big fly" for a home run - that is like nails on a chalkboard to me, even when i was a kid.

"Scuffling" - which somehow became really popular a few years ago and it seemed like you couldn't watch any baseball broadcast, anywhere, without hearing it every few minutes. It has either slowly died down by now, or my mind has somehow figured out a way to block it out. But i still hear it occasionally.

I realize this probably should be in the Annoying Terms thread, but kind of fits this conversation i think..

Any game that I watch were the announcers talk about everything except the game. This mainly refers to ESPN Sunday Night baseball. I can't even watch it because they are always talking about somebody else or some other team totally.

My opinion should probably go in the uncommon opinions thread, but ESPN sports coverage has been lacking for the most part - for many years. I haven't enjoyed most of ESPN's coverage of most things since i was a kid. It just usually seems shiny with very little substance.

I'd say that's a pretty common opinion around here. I don't know many people that enjoy ESPN's broadcast style. I think most just tolerate it.

I can't even stand to watch Sportscenter anymore. Talk, talk, talk is all they do anymore. I watched it to see highlights and scores of games. I can't remember the last time I watched even a minute of SC.
