Feeling guilty about taking a day off. I don’t know why, that’s what sick/vacation time is for!

I took Friday off, told my boss I would not even look at my laptop.

I check my email on Friday morning, I notice one of the directors wanting to meet with my team on a project and data we pulled that is being presented to high level executives on Monday morning. I decide to call in for this quick 30 minute meeting because I'm responsible and want to make sure my stuff is good. Thing lasts an hour and then was forced to do 2 hours of work that had to be finished by EOD because somebody else took off and wasn't working Friday.

I was kicking myself for calling into that meeting.

I'm more shocked that another human being actually used one of those. I thought I was the only one left...

Really? In my area, I can't remember the last time that one WASN'T used. I've even had the person in front of me put it out at the end of their order for me. In fact, it's happened to me enough that I find myself doing it without really thinking about it.

I let woman, about 60 years old, cross a really busy street the other day, I stopped my truck and waved her on. She crossed safely, however, she did not wave or thank me in any way. Didn't even consider it.

The lack of thank you I see grinds my gears so much! Even letting cars pull out, nothing. My area people just walk across the street whenever they feel like it and expect you to stop and they walk SO SLOWLY just staring at you.

So I do and NOTHING, except sometimes they give you the occasional finger or hand just because!

It is making a cold 40 year old.

On that note, when approaching a four-way intersection with all stops, I do not courteously always let you go first. I play it exactly as is: go first if you stopped first, and use the right-of-way rule if there is a tie. Apparently I'm the only person on the planet who watches the other car(s) stop while I feel/know when I have complete stoppage. (By the way, pro-tip for baseball umpires out there... your best way of making a call on a force play is to look at the bag and listen for the catch. Whichever happens first gives you that decision to make, but it does require that you multitask two different senses.)

What often happens is I will still be slowing to my stop when a car to the left/right of me stops first, and they let me go anyway. I insist that they go, but they are either completely uncalibrated or nonobservant as to when I stop.

That first example isn't so bad, but it irks when it's the other way around. I'll get there first and they'll just want to move assuming that they got there first, without even looking at me.

What is the absolute worst of them is when there is a dense amount of cars at all four stops, and the entitled ones decide to go do their thing when I have watched when all three of the other cars have stopped to know my place in line. Some elitist prick driving a BMW or something always messes it up and goes before me. I never, ever let them have it. I go through the intersection and give them the scowl of disappointment every single time.

Strategically, there are only two instances where I will enter the intersection early and out of turn. One such time is when another car is in a straight lane going the same direction that I am, and it is their turn to go. As long as I was legally stopped at the time, I will move in an even pace with them and everyone else would be none the wiser. The other scenario is when I am right-turning, and a car stopped on the road to the right of me is turning left. Other cars can't go in any of these scenarios anyway, so I might as well do my thing.

EDIT: By the way, I don't want you to think that I am calling all people who drive BMW's elitist pricks... even if that's really what I may actually be doing. But I definitely don't want you to think it.

I use them all the time, and will put one behind my own stuff when I'm done loading the conveyor belt. It seems pretty common everywhere I've lived.

I hope you didn't count that day as "off". If you are checking your email and calling into meetings, you aren't "off". You're simply working remotely. That should not count as a day off and any HR department following the law would agree with that.

I'm not sure why it's so hard for people to understand 4-way stops but I've given up thinking the collective driving IQ is going to ever go up. Everything posted above just seems like common sense (to me, anyway). That's why I've slowly become a proponent of replacing as many 4-way stops as possible with alternate metering lights (like you see on highways) to avoid confusion. It shouldn't be necessary but all my experience tells me it is.

I don't necessarily feel guilty but I do get this sense of doom/anxiety about how much stuff will pile up or how much crap I'll have to fix when I get back.

So much for that trip I was hoping for.

The people I was gonna go with decided to just cancel all plans despite them literally telling me to try and find hotels in the area between a certain timeframe (I was almost like a travel planner lol, even looking up things to do in the area). Spent awhile on this, but I found real good choices (best of which being a cottage, which is hard to find this time of the year, especially at the price I found it), just for them to back out completely. Nothing to do with the place itself, they just decided they don't want to go anywhere all of a sudden, despite as recently as yesterday even stating their interest in all of this. Not the first time something similar to his has happened.

Not going on a road trip by myself (though one day I probably should. Just drive, and drive, and drive, and drive, during a non busy time of the year(so no traffic) to "get away" from everything), so this ruins my plans too.

I hate how this type of stuff happens. I didn't care at all about going on any kind of trip and if nobody had mentioned it to me, I wouldn't have bothered. But once people start putting ideas in my head about something being a possibility(not just a trip,but anything in general), I warm up to that idea, only for it to be completely thrown out of the window and forgotten about. If they never mentioned it, I would have never cared about it, but once it seems like a possibility, only for it to not happen, that "grinds my gears".


If it's not gonna happen, or there's a chance it won't happen, don't tell me about it! Tell me once it's confirmed and for sure happening. False sense of hope sucks.

Like you said, people have all bailed on stuff before, but I'm sure it might've been smaller things, and likely a reasoning behind it too. But to go as far as to say "lets plan a week long trip somewhere" and get as close to booking a place without actually booking it, and backing out is cheap.

But like I said, it's not just about the trip, it's about things like this happening in general. I probably just take people for their word too much, especially people who are "just talk".

I probably will one day just go somewhere by myself, but don't know when. Though I've always gone somewhere with at least 1 other person, so it'd be a new/weird experience going to an unfamiliar town, navigating and sightseeing everywhere without anyone else. Driving is somewhat different since you at least have radio/music. Might just to something like that next summer. Be like "I'm going to ___. Come if you want, if not, I'm going".


Maybe people would be more enticed if it's like "lets take a plane to ___!", because nowadays I see so many people who seem to want to avoid nature, going through parks, driving down the open road and all of that (aka stuff that's appealing to me). My idea of a good vacation vs other peoples are completely different things. I could spend an entire weekend at a cabin by a lake. Other people, not so much.

There are plenty of people that enjoy things like this. I think you just need to find some new friends.
