That was not a fun morning, but the building plumber and manager at least cleaned up the mess after unclogging the drain.
Oh I was only joking, it definitely sucks.

And aren't you near all the closed roads in Oakland for move in week? That would only make it worse.

My wife stayed at work (works for Pitt) until just about 15 minutes ago just to avoid the traffic and probably will all week.

I understand you having to move the seat up or back to safely reach the peddles, but there is no reason, imo, to mess with adjusting the head rest or how the back of the seat is angled. You were just driving it a few blocks within town and then their house to my house (30 minutes tops). You didn't need to make it that comfortable.

        I could tolerate that.

I'm on Centre Ave. in North Oakland so just off the edge of campus and I work in Lawrenceville so I don't have to go through campus and my bus this morning which goes through campus before getting to my stop actually arrived pretty much right when the schedule says it's supposed to. We'll see how it is the rest of the week though.

The empty gas issue drives me crazy. When my friend sold me her truck before moving to New York she made sure to get it fixed up as best as possible before she left. We met the "mechanic apprentice" to pick it up and he was like "how do you deal with that loud banging sound?" and we said "what loud banging sound?" and he acted like oh nvm. We get in and the gas is on E and the car is in 4WD during summer. Must've bumped the button on accident, then ran it on the freeway, probably going 80 mph in 4WD. This **** ruined the 4WD and left me with an empty tank

I refuse to use self-checkout. I have watched my father use it 3 times now at 3 different stores and every time he has needed assistance because it didn't work. So why use it if you need someone to help you anyways? My father has finally given up on it now also.

Self-checkout is all I use when I can. In and out in a few minutes, works without issue.

                      Self-checkouts, both good and bad.

Good to use. Can just check out your stuff without the obligatory small talk with random cashier, and you can use up your change on the machine without feeling guilty that you're making someone count all your coins.

But sucks during those moments it forces you to wait for assistance and it takes forever, or you're in line at a self checkout and people using it clearly haven't used a touch screen of any kind before.

Although, self checkouts at grocery stores, that's just using the honor system right? If someone truly wanted to, couldn't they just bag some bananas or apples or whatever and just not pay for it? There's no barcode on it so there's no way they can tell you're taking it unless they check your receipt and see you didn't pay for everything you have.

I mean, you could steal at a self checkout, but there's a non-zero risk to you getting caught. Firstly, there are store cameras and surveillance. Secondly, there's usually an employee working a bank of those machines to get people unstuck and they can be a bit oddly proactive about coming over to stick those stickers on your soda packages or to clean off the scanner. Depending on who it is, the person might or might not be paying attention. Thirdly, if anyone is in line behind you (and they definitely are watching closely and hoping you finish soon) they could rat you out. Stores also tend to turn the machines off at night when they go to a skeleton crew and don't want to oversee them.

The biggest thing for the stores, however, is the self check machines save so much money on labor costs that additional costs via theft are already accounted for and then some. It's baked into the system.

Picked up some bagels from Panera last week for the office and they had the same thing. It was so easy that I actually went to a register anyway just to make sure I didn't miss anything...

I don't know how I feel about it, TBH. I like the ease of it and I can make all my changes/substitutions where I know that they're entered right. On the other hand, I don't want to completely get rid of human interactions. Even on a rough day, a smile and friendly banter with the cashier is nice.

Those machines are weight sensitive though, at least they are here, if you put bananas in a bag it'll tell you to remove the previous item before letting you continue

Yeah, but does yours have the "I don't want to bag this item" button like my store does? You could just hit that and put them back in the cart.

The weight thing can also be tricked by setting other things on the scale. Or taking one item off and putting two items on...
