Re: You know what really grinds my gears?
1) They can be entertaining at times. I absolutely loved when Seth MacFarlane hosted.
2) I get exposed to some films that I hadn't ever heard of, or didn't bother giving the time of day by an RT score and word-of-mouth alone. Sometimes it takes hearing more about the story and seeing handpicked images of it.
3) I like seeing the "little guys" get honored, and this includes the director. The lead actor and main supports are just a small fish in that bigger pond of rolling credits, and seeing the empire that it takes to make a film and have a creative hand in it, getting recognized nonetheless,
4) It's just like sports: sometimes I will have favorites and want to see those outcomes.
5) The Academy Awards is voted on by over 8,000 members, all with their noses up in the [snobbish and pretentious as it can be] film business and the wherewithal to make a clear-cut statement that those which are elected and victorious must have some small shred of assurance that there is something quality about what those pieces represented, which of course goes back to my statement #2. I never would have seen The Shape of Water if it didn't win Best Director and Best Picture. This does not apply to the Golden Globes, as the Hollywood Foreign Press has less than 100 members and decided to either call The Martian a comedy or a musical... I'm still not sure which.
6) The In Memoriam segment and Academy Honorary Award. Enough said.
And although I have nothing to back this up, for all I know the Oscars very well may be the most watched annual live national event without a sports tag on it. They must be doing something right to get our attention. It's only once a year, so it's not like it's hurting anybody that badly.Last edited by Blzer; 01-13-2019, 04:45 AM.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?
The only award shows I ever watched were the Grammys if there was an interesting performance promoted. I can't tell you the last time I even did that though.
As for the topic...you know what really grinds my gears? My external hard drive just suddenly crapping out. I didn't have that much on it and I've recovered a decent amount of the stuff I'd really want to keep...but man, this is annoying. Guess it's better than completely losing it all though.Comment

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?
Why do these millennial/hipster type people often have to act like snobs?
They have Apple products, I have Android, to them I have a worse product and they feel the need to make it known that their expensive stuff makes them better.
They like Starbucks, I don't, somehow that means I don't like good things.
They like the big city lifestyle, I like a simpler relaxed one, that means I'm weird.
I like certain types of food, they like different types, it means I have bad taste.
It's one thing to just like different things, everyone's different, nothing wrong with that. But people going out of their way to make it known that people who are different than them are beneath them gets me mad. It's like they're in shock meeting someone different than them. Buy all the expensive things and eat at all the trendy city places you want, I'm probably happier with myself than they are.Comment

There are snobs in all generations. You do you and ignore the flak.

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?
Do people in your day to day life actually do those things anyway? If you really pay attention you’ll find that about 99.9% of people don’t actually care about what you’re doing.

And if they like Starbucks, they aren't coffee snobs, they just don't know the first darn thing about quality coffee.Comment

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?
I personally like to have things different than other people. I don't like to think that's why I have them, but to be of an exclusive group seems significant all the same.
Many of my friends don't happen to...
- Switch hit (in baseball)
- Drive manual transmission
- Own Blu-rays / 3D / calibrated home theater equipment
- Own a Vita
- Carry around a 17.3" laptop
- Have a flip phone, which is obviously the rarest of the rare
- Abstain from hip-hop/rap/modern music you'd hear on FM radio
- Be a big Atlanta Braves fan (which is oddly particular, but there you go)
I'm sure the list goes on, but I wanted to throw a few of those out there. I certainly do stand out from others when items like this are brought up in conversation, which is kind of nice when it comes to the thought of somebody wearing his personality on his sleeve.
Some of those items of mine are clearly the weirdest of the weird, but I like to make them my own, embrace them, and squeeze out every bit of those things that I can. I do believe that it makes me unique and I'm not necessarily thought of any less as a result.
In a world of iPhone 'this' and popular item 'that,' I just don't see a need to be one of the people who is trying so hard to be exactly like everyone else. It's like that Syndrome line from The Incredibles: "And when everyone's super... no one will be." It's not of any special feeling, that's for sure.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Carrying around a 17" laptop and not having a smart phone seems like an incredibly inefficient way to have something interesting to say at parties. Whatever works for you though.

You know what really grinds my gears?
I’ve been hitting Starbucks because they built one (actually renovated a Wendy’s... RIP) with a drive thru on my way to work. It’s too cold and dark and early to get out and go in to a store. lol
$5 for a fancy coffee is not sustainable. I do sometimes feel sheepish walking in with that cup. I don’t drink gas station coffee, but I’m not classy/rich/vain enough to be exclusively drinking Starbucks either. Sometimes ya gotta treat yourself.
