Yeah. I don't always succeed, but I just try to be a better person today than I was yesterday. Life's hard enough on its own sometimes, no need for me to add anything beyond that.Comment

Maybe I'm weird but I never really consider how diverse a cast is. I notice it obviously but it just has no bearing on how much I care about a project. I'm not more likely to see a movie because of a diverse cast but I'm also not outraged that black actors get jobs playing white cartoon characters. I just watch a thing and judge whoever for the performance they put out there.
I totally pre-judged this Little Mermaid news for a second though, because I read the headline as Halle Berry.
This is how I feel too but what I’ve come to learn is that it matters to some of the people who didn’t look like the original character (or ANY of the other Disney characters) even if it doesn’t matter to me.
The remake isn’t meant to be exactly the same as the first time, and that’s okay. They’re not taking anything from me, the original still exists. They’re adding a new chapter even if it’s a rehash. What some consider PC marketing is actually making some feel like they are seen, especially for what is a young child’s movie. The hashtag rebellion is misdirected hostility. Every movie is marketed to trigger some sense in its audience. This one isn’t hitting for some people, but that’s no reason to get upset. Be happy for the folks who are excited the character looks like them in this remake.
I guess it’s like when someone from your hometown “makes it” in sport, entertainment, etc. You feel like your home is now on the map. So when Suzy from the next town over makes it, it shouldn’t be a moment that makes anyone mad. There’s room for both.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers

Anyone have a problem with Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury?
I feel like people just use certain things as an excuse. If the actor is diff AND an unknown than how it was written, people freak out. Fury was diff too, but in sure because of who was playing him, people gave it a chance.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?
In the original Little Mermaid story, she was green.
And she had her tongue ripped out in exchange for legs and feet.
Feet that bled the entire time she was on land.
And the prince found her hideous and married someone else.
She thought about murdering both of them in their sleep.
Instead she died and her body melted away into sea foam.
But yeah, having a black girl play a mermaid in the Caribbean is WAY too far.Boston Red Sox

Haha, most Disney origin stories are absolutely horrific. The adaptions have always been toned down and given the PG treatment. They’re really just continuing to do what they’ve always done.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers

As a person of color you nailed it!
10yrs should I probably wouldn’t have cared too much but as a father of two girls, I’d like for them to see superheroes, fictional characters, etc... that occasionally look like them.

There have been movies and other things over the last few years that I never would've given a second thought to but after seeing my nieces get super excited just because it featured a woman or a girl doing it? Man, I went from indifferent to understanding it a lot more.Comment

Lots of the Disney adapted fairy tales have darker versions. A Grimm's style adaption of some of them would be nice.Comment

Man, I can’t believe people are genuinely upset about this Mermaid bull****. I’m more concerned that Disney’s run out of original ideas; they’re redoing old cartoons as live-actions and making (IMO) unnecessary sequels.
I used to care about small stuff like that. Now, as long as it’s not affecting me, I could care less.
People that really get upset about that stuff need to enjoy life more

Re: You know what really grinds my gears?
At the end of the day if little girls who happen to be African American get to have their own Disney princess, it's absolutely insane to be mad about this if you think about it rationally for just a minute.
But these days everything is about social media posturing, negativity and trolling.Comment

Right? There was an original Princess story that came out in the late 2000s that focused on an African American princess in New Orleans. Nothing but praise. They change one little detail and it’s a huge firestorm.
Now that I think about it, I think it’s less about racism and more about changing something that everybody’s familiar with. People tend to be skeptical about small changes like that, citing it as an excuse to fulfill some PC agenda.
Which happens, imo, but a change here makes sense and isn’t driven by PCness.
People just suck, manComment
