This girl failed her permit test, and she still got a BMW for her birthday. Worst show ever.

I don't think I was ever spanked as a child, but I was very well-behaved kid, so I didn't really warrant any spankings. My little brother on the other hand, needed to get spanked as a child but didn't, and now he can get away with pretty much anything because he knows nothing will happen to him.

I agree with the rare spanking. I'm not into the new age crap either, you need the threat of the spanking.

That being said, if you're constantly spanking your child you're doing something wrong. I was spanked very rarely, and it was effective. I don't think the "I'm taking my belt off" stuff happening every day really teaches a kid, it just instills fear and hate of the parent (which is worse IMO).

Like everyone's said, voice inflection and all that can really be much more effective.

Good posts. My wife and I have a 5-month old and have discussed this a few times and have agreed mostly on the premises set here. Neither of us were hit often as a kid, but received a spanking as a worst case scenario.

We both agree that a child should never be spanked for doing something that they just don't know about, rather than a situation where they obviously understand and are stil disobeying. For instance, if a kid was trying to help out in the kitchen and dropped a glass and broke it, that is not a situation that would warrant dicipline. But if the kid is in the other room pounding on the cat or dog, when they have been told not to do so, then I think it is justified.

I've gotten the good old soap in my mouth once, but that's really the only punishment I've ever received. I was a damn good kid, and hopefully my kids will be as good as I was so I won't have to worry about hitting them or not.

I probably won't, though. Not that I don't believe in it, but since I was never spanked and was raised fine, I am going to try my parents way of raising me. It's all about the voice and the looks. Those hurt me more than any hit ever would have.

We use timeouts. Seem to be more effective than spankings. I tried spankings at first but decided against it. The biggest issue I had was I felt guilty (which tells me that is not the right answer) and I felt it was teaching our son to hit.

I just tell her in a firm voice not to do it and it stops, if not I spank. I don't like all that counting to 5 crap, when I say stop, she needs to stop.

I remember when I was a kid, I got my fair share of spankings, and it definately was the reason I never did the same stupid thing twice.

But I also agree it cannot be over done or it will lose its meaning.

I was only spanked 4 or 5 times in my entire life that I can remember... So the occasional discipline with spankings is fine by me. Kids have been getting it for years, and it when used correctly I think it really works. The worst though was when my mom put soap in my mouth for talking bad... liquid soap!

I don't think I lost the taste of soap in my mouth for a few days LOL!
