we are going to have to find alternate sources. Oil is not a renewable resource so we are going to HAVE to find another source (wont affect our generation but our grandkids wont appreciate it). I guess necessity will become the mother of invention eventually.

That is all true but that doesnt help us right now today. That is the same type of stuff the government is talking. They talk and talk about what we need to do but they dont provide any ideas or solutions about the problem right now today.

They get 18 percent with all of their gas taxes (and again make more than oil companies)...perhaps the government can take most of those taxes and invest it into research of alternative sources? (of course not, they dont and they wont). It's not the oil companies' jobs to find alternative sources. Oil companies jobs are to find and produce oil and gas.

Anyway, it's pretty simple. If we want to lower gas prices significantly, we need to do something to increase supply, not decrease supply. Let me help you out, the oil companies increase supply. The government talks and raises taxes.

The oil companies are just as guilty of being all talk and no action as the government. Please, don't act like the oil companies are innocent bystanders with the consumers best interest at heart. Hell the oil companies have a lot of blame in to why we aren't further along in developing alternate fuel sources.

And please save the supply and demand stuff. Especially when we all know that seems to be as fixed as the prices.

Despite what you claim, the oil companies are not out to do us any favors, and have proven time and time again they will gouge the consumer using any means necessary.

There are a few companies trying to help research and make alternative energy resources. Those companies (BP, Chevron) will be the energy leaders of our future.

But damn, oil companies are making a load of money. One of my friends families owns a large oil company and when I see the profits they are raking in just last quarter it makes my jaw drop.

Re: Can anyone explain to me why gas is still rising?

You all sure love to hate on the oil companies, don't you? They go out there and pour their money into exploring for new oil, then Congress comes in and tells them they can't drill. The environmentalists will not let us drill where we need to, yet they complain about the prices.

Congress wants to impose Windfall profits taxes on the oil companies. Yet, that is going to hurt you, the consumer, more than anyone. The oil companies will simply raise the prices to offset the extra taxes and you'll be stuck paying the extra taxes in actuality.

One reason the price of oil is so high is because the speculators know that Congress has no intentions on allowing the oil companies to drill here in the US. They know that Congress is all talk and no action, so the price of those commodities go up. Yet Congress blames speculators when they are the ones to blame for the price rise since they won't do anything about the problem.

Then they want to raise the gas tax...

Oh course, there is one source of oil that is right under our feet which could last us for hundreds of years. It's coal and we can convert coal it oil for the equivalent of $50 per barrel of oil. That sounds a lot better than the $120+ oil we have now. Yet they won't do anything about this. I saw where the military is now using coal and converting it into oil because they don't want to be dependent on hostile countries for the oil which they need to fight wars. Why don't we follow their leads?

Anyways, to put it short, the government is the source of the problem.

highest profits of any U.S. company. That is actually good for the US...unless people would rather become even more dependent on foreign oil companies and keep funding them so they can buy more American real estate (companies which are mostly nationalized)

                      http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/02/...ness/exxon.php

"the higher profits in the industry mask a more contrasted reality.

Faced with the resurging power of national oil companies, like PetroChina, Petróleo Brasileiro of Brazil, or Gazprom of Russia - Western majors are having a hard time increasing their production and renewing reserves.

As oil prices increase, countries like Russia and Venezuela have tightened the screws on foreign investors, limiting access to energy resources or demanding a bigger share of the revenue. At the same time, many of the traditional production regions, like the North Sea or Alaska, are slowly drying up. The industry is also being pressured by rising costs and shortages of workers, rigs and engineering capacity.

Western majors, once dominant in the global energy business, now control only about 6 percent of the world's oil reserves. Last year, PetroChina overtook Exxon as the world's largest publicly traded oil company. Saudi Aramco, which is wholly owned by the Saudi government, pumps four times more oil than Exxon. It owns about 25 percent of the world's proven oil reserves."

"Global oil supplies were nearly flat last year, growing a mere 100,000 barrels a day to 85.5 million barrels on average, according to the International Energy Agency. Growth in Russia and the Middle East was offset by declines in the United States and the North Sea.

Oil demand last year grew by a million barrels to 85.8 million barrels.

Meanwhile, OPEC, which met Friday in Vienna, decided to leave its production levels unchanged, resisting pressure fro
m developing nations to pump more oil into the global economy."

I have to read this book for school and this one line made me think of some of the opinions you guys share, and how they differ with the author.

p.s. I'm not 100% sure I did the parenthesis and page number stuff right, but I should because I have to write an essay about this book that will heavily scrutinized before school starts. I can't wait.
