Think about it this way: if everyone who worked in the service industry who got paid less than minimum wage and relied on tips to make a living actually did quit and went and got a better job (as some of you suggested) then guess what? There wouldn't be anyone left to deliver your lazy asses a pizza, or take your orders and wait on you in a sit down restaurant when you don't feel like cooking at home or pour your drinks at a bar when you want to drown your sorrows, etc. The whole, "If you don't like my cheap *** not tipping you, then get a better job" argument doesn't fly with me.

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
This picture sums up me feelings on this topic
Basically what I mean is, tipping should only occur if you do something that warrants extra money. Doing your job alone doesn't deserve anything more than the wage you agreed to when you agreed to work there. And before anybody does the whole "ERMAHGERD, DEY MAHK LERS THERN MAHNERMERM WERG, DEY NERD MAHR!" thing, think of it this way, there are tons of ****ty jobs out there that pay minimum wage, pick one of those instead if you can't handle someone not paying you extra for doing your job.
I assumed it was common knowledge but this post leads me to believe different.Last edited by kehlis; 06-28-2013, 06:24 PM.Comment

I usually tip well. Unless the waiter/waitress is lazy. Then I don't tip at all.Comment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
If the service was that bad, you should consider talking to someone rather than just leaving nothing. You may think you're making a point, but its really counterproductive.
It may start a chain of events that causes the next customers service to suck. Its easy to paint a picture of how it could come full circle on you.Comment

Nobody is ever making less than
minimum wage. If the base wage is less than minimum, and tips don't make up the difference, the employer is required to make up the difference.

What is the minimum wage for workers who receive tips?
An employer may pay a tipped employee not less than $2.13 an hour in direct wages if that amount plus the tips received equal at least the federal minimum wage, the employee retains all tips and the employee customarily and regularly receives more than $30 a month in tips. If an employee's tips combined with the employer's direct wages of at least $2.13 an hour do not equal the federal minimum hourly wage, the employer must make up the difference.
I didn't know that.Comment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
Servers don't sign up for minimum wage and in fact they don't really know what they are signing up for based on tips so it's not fair to say they need to be willing to work for whatever they "signed up for."
Disagree?Comment

There will always be people in this world that are cheap and proud of not tipping.
If our server did his job well (and I'm not even talking going "above and beyond") they deserve to be tipped well
If you check on us a couple times when relevant, don't make us wait unnecessarily and make yourself available to your tables I'm happy with that. We went out for dinner the other night and our bill was ~$58. Left a 22 dollar tip because our servers did their job well.badComment

Heck, our daughter is a waitress at a truck stop and she said she's happy with a dollar per person. She get's upset when people get up and leave without giving a tip and not once did anyone seem dissatified with the service. She than goes through the , What did I do wrong scenero's?

That would apply to anyone who wanted a better paying job. I would imagine that a majority of fast food/restaurant workers can't get a better job. If these jobs are really that bad then I don't see many doing because they had a better job available.MLB: Texas Rangers

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
I know people who work in restaurants/bars who make plenty and live very comfortably. I even know some who have left the service industry for this "better job" and return because they made more as a server/bartender.
They just have to be willing to live with different hours than what society has deemed to be the right working hours.
It's not fair to make that assumption of all of them because it's far from the truth.Last edited by kehlis; 06-28-2013, 09:23 PM.Comment
