Here in the Philippines you basically just tip the smallest bill you get in change or something like 20 or 40 pesos which is .50 to a 1 US dollar. I would tip 20% sometimes and the servers are so grateful because they never get anything like that. Granted the service is not close to what you get in the US but they only make less than 10 bucks a day working 10 hours a day so i don't mind making their day if they give good service.

Does that wage still apply to waiters abd waitresses though? the minimum wage here is $7.75 I believe, but from what I've heard waiters make like $3.00 an hour plus tips.

I read an article and restaurants have 3-5 years, depending on size, to pay them $15 an hour so yes it does apply to them.

What tips can be counted toward minimum compensation?
Small employers can pay an hourly minimum wage and make up the minimum compensation balance with employee tips and/or payments toward an employee’s medical benefits plan. To use tips to make up the balance of minimum compensation, the tips must be (a) actually received by the employee and (b) reported to the Internal Revenue Service. Note: employers must provide employees notice of tip policy at the time of hire (as required by the City of Seattle’s Administrative Wage Theft Ordinance).

I would assume almost all restaurants would be considered small businesses since even the big ones are franchised.


I did see that most places that are paying the $15/hour and invoking a "No Tip" policy.

The way minimum wage on tipped employees works is that if they're wage+tips is less than the standard minimum wage, the employer is responsible for the difference. So a tipped employee can't make less than, for example, $15 in Seattle (once that's the full min wage) even if they don't get a cent of tips.

That said, I live a little outside of Seattle, and will be moving closer to the city soon. I'll simply avoid dining/drinking there when possible because of the increased prices the city will see (it's already expensive there)

It seems like it would raise the service level in tip based restaurants. Managers and owners are going to have short straws on crappy employees who can't get above that threshold.

Let me preface this by saying I am a very good tipper as long as the service is good.

I just got back from a trip to Disney World (we go every year, so this is a brand new practice) and every dining establishment there has a new way of handling checks. I would almost call it a shaming policy. The waitress will bring you a copy of your check JUST for you to write in the tip amount. You are not given anything to sign yet. You have to give the check back to the waitress so she can input the tip amount in to the computer, and then you get another copy of the check to sign off on.

So basically you have to sit there and wait for the waitress to return after she has already seen her tip. So if you had a bad experience and don't want to tip very highly, get ready for an awkward exit.

I remember one time I ate at some restaurant near the Grand Canton and had probably the worst service of my life and I didn't give him a tip. A couple of days later the bill hits my credit card statement and he gave himself a tip. Let's just say he doesn't work there anymore.

Also, tipping based on percentages of the bill is certainly one of the most idiotic social norms we have in this country. Why should the server make more or less depending on if I order a steak and a root beer, as opposed to a sandwich and a water? They are still bringing me only 1 plate and 1 cup.

Another Disney example.

On night #1 we go to a steakhouse. The service is okay, nothing special. The waiter doesn't do anything wrong but nothing above and beyond either. $178 bill.

On night #2 we go to an italian brick oven place. All we order is breadsticks and a large margharita pizza. The waitress was fantastic, she was knowledgeable about the restaurant, the area, the shows and whatnot that were going on, was always around when we needed something. $33 bill.

The waitress in the pizza place got the larger tip.

I've said the same thing. I don't get some of the arguments for that. If I'm at the same restaurant, same waitress, and one day I order a steak and potato with a sweet tea for say $20, and the next day at lunch I order the lunch hamburger special with a water for $5, why would I give her 4 times as much just because you brought a plate out with a steak on it?

Obligatory Disclaimer: I'm a great tipper and always have been.

I'm convinced that if everything we know about the tipping system was erased from our memory (MIB style), and we were forced to rebuild the service industry from the ground up, our current system would easily be one of the most absurd suggestions.

While I'm ranting...

No one has ever given me a reasonable explanation for

a) why do I have to tip a taxi driver? What does the fare cover?

b) When you order delivery, you pay a delivery charge and you tip. Isn't that paying twice for the same thing?

To somewhat answer "B", the driver only gets a percentage of the delivery charge. When I delivered, our delivery fee was $2 and change and we got $1 of that. I figure if I got your food to you faster than the quoted time or on time, I should get a decent tip. If the food was late or cold, I couldn't really argue getting stiffed.

Isn't that an in-house problem though? As a customer, I pay $2.95 delivery charge to have the food delivered then I tip because........ the food was delivered? That's where I get lost.
