Re: Gaming/PC Setups
I'm looking into upgrading my PC again. Anybody tried the Intel Core i7 CPU's? Right now I'm trying to decide between these:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz
Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz
The Core 2 Quad is about $100 cheaper so I'll probably go with that.Comment

I upgraded from the Kentsfield to the Nehalem when I built my new setup. I multi-task alot (Premiere/Photoshop/After Effects/Firefox/Itunes usually running simeltaneously) and my machine doesn't skip a beat. It does seem to move a lot faster than my old PC (where I had the 6600) but I wouldn't attribute it to just the i7 as I've also upgraded to faster HDD's and more memory.
If you have the money, I'd say go with the 920. It is overclockable, there just aren't many quality heatsinks out for it at the moment (at least not when I looked). If your trying to save money then go with the 6600. With it's ease of overclocking and the price tag you can't go wrong, and I doubt you'd see a noticeable difference.

Re: Gaming/PC Setups
I use my PC mostly for gaming so will probably go with the q6600 or e8500 and use the extra $100 for a better GPU. I know most games don't take advantage of multiple cores yet but I have seen comments saying that Empire Total War will perform better on quad cores, which has me leaning towards the q6600.
Any thoughts on whether the reduced clock speed of the q6600 (2.4ghz) vs the e8500 (3.16ghz) causes a performance hit on current games?Comment

Re: Gaming/PC Setups
Wow, no love for the AMD side of the computer? I just got the Phenom 9850 BE but can't build until the funds get a little more sensible. I kind of should have waited until the new AM3s came out but I saw the deal and couldn't pass it up. For those who are trying to find more information out, I'd recommend going to a site like overclock.net. They have very informative boards over there for people who are curious to build computers. They also have a part on the site where you can buy parts from trusted users for sensible prices. Just a word for those interested.......Comment
