Re: Another Great Tasting Beer Thread

So, admittedly I'm not much of a beer connoisseur and not really sure what the differences between lets say an IPA or a stout or really any other type of beer. I assume its in the taste, but that's about as far as I know. Anybody care to school me a little?

On a spectrum (basically, I'm forgetting some styles, as there are like 50) from light to dark:

      Hefeweisen/wheat beer
      American Lager (think Bud)
      Pilsner
      Farmhouse/Belgian ale
      Pale Ale
      India Pale Ale
      Imperial IPA
      Amber ale/lager
      Red lager
Belgian trappist styles (dubbel, tripel, quadruple)
      Strong Ale
      Brown Ale
      Barleywine
      Black Ale
      Porter
      Stout
      Imperial Stout

From hoppy to malty (approximate and varies by beer):

      Imperial IPA
      IPA
      Pale Ale
      Barleywine (sometimes can be super-hoppy)
      Strong Ale
      Belgian Farmhouse/Saison
      Pilsner
      American Lager
      Red
      Belgian trappist ales
      Brown Ale
      Porter
      Stout

If you wanna dig around and really get good descriptions for the sub-styles and basically everything (I don't know much of crap about German styles, for example), BeerAdvocate has a great page: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/style

If I drink a 750ml of La Fin Du Monde, I'll pretty much be dusted, right?

I normally am... one big bomber of anything 8%+ normally does me right where I'd be in the "drunk" stage if I drank any more. I was definitely in the drunk state after the 9%+ combo I had last night, and that was about the size of a bomber with maybe another 3 oz tagged on (12 oz + 16 oz).

I wouldn't say "dusted", but if you're not a big drinker (I get that impression from your posts that you're more like me and drink mainly for flavor/experimentation), you'll probably be pretty set.

Yeah, I'm not a crazy drinker. I've actually found that I get a nice buzz after 3 12oz high-quality beers. I think the quality ingredients make it easier to attain that buzz.

I just dont want to open a big 750 and have it go to waste because I don't really have anyone else to share it with.

SARANAC BLACK & TAN Surprisingly, this is a damn good beer
this beer is very roasty with some coffee, chocolate flavor. it is very smooth and kinda thin. u can drink a few at once or a couple with a meal its not overly filling.

Dark malt roast dominates the aroma, a bit of chocolate, and a bit sweet.
Some caramel malt sweetness early, but then the dark grain bitterness (and hops?) kicks in strongly. After the bitter rush, the finish is fairly clean with just a subtle lingering bitterness. The lager addition really smooths out the stout character. not bad all for 7 bucks a rack.
This was included in the Saranac taster 6-pack I got tonight. Had the Outer Adirondak Lager...very good.

                  What does "AA" mean?

                  This beer sounds delicious.

Thanks for asking, as I probably wouldn't have learned this otherwise:

"Each hop variety will have its own range of alpha acid percentage or AA% (Alpha acid is a resin contained in the hop plant that is responsible for the bitterness in beer.) as well as aroma characteristics."

                    Cool stuff.

Going to have a couple Old Rasputin's and check out something else dark(maybe a Stone Imperial Russian Stout, stick with the genre of the night). With winter right around the corner. The guys like myself who like dark heavy full flavor beers, that time of the year is right around the corner again

Hm....so the higher the AA is, the more bitter it will be? Not terribly crazy at the sound of that.

Re: Another Great Tasting Beer Thread

I dunno what the spectrum is for that rating though for a finished product (75 is WAY above any one of the hops ratings, so I dunno if it translates)... a Hazelnut Brown Ale will not be bitter, I can almost guarantee it. Brown ales are one of the most mild styles out there, I'm sure you'd like that one.

I've been on a huge session-style beer kick lately, mostly thanks to this place that does an $8.50 sandwich + session beer special for my uber-late lunchbreak. Tried the Coney Island Mermaid Pilsner from He'Brew today and REALLY liked it... I could see myself drinking that as a go-to when I'm looking to drink 3-4 beers. Also fond of the various Saisons around, especially the Boulevard Tank 7 and Hennepin (Ommegang). GABF caused another explosion in brewpubs and places with insane beer lists, so I've kinda been in heaven the last few months between that, the MMJ scene, and the street food scene.. god I love Denver.

Thinking a Victory Prima Pils sixer tonight... it's a phenomenally beautiful day and sitting out on my back porch with some Super Sour Fire OG and a beer or two sounds like a quality plan.

One of the reviews on BA said that the Hazelnut one tastes like Nutella, and I'm definitely a Nutella-whore.

Always got a kick out of the He'Brew name, but never tried any of their beers.

So, after 90 days of sobriety I took what used to be my usual Thursday night trip to the local German pub in Cleveland about two miles down the road called Der Braumeister.

I had my usual 24 oz. Aventinus on draft and followed it up with a 24 oz. Weihenstephaner on draft. I then sipped on two glasses of Chambord and enjoyed a nice plate of my usual vegetarian Maul Taschen, which is a spinach and goat cheese ravioli topped with sauteed vegetables and a cauliflower cream sauce.

I then stopped in at my local corner pub afterward and sucked down two Hoegaardens in the bottle (best thing they have unfortunately) before heading home. Needles to say, I was pretty loaded and it feels good (sort of) to be back off the wagon and I look forward to contributing to this thread again.
