    Tonights featured brew:

    Wychwood Hobgoblin

Pours a dark brown color with ruby highlights, producing a 1 finger fluffy off-white head that leaves moderate lacing.

Aroma of dark fruit, chocolate, some roasted malt and a bit of coffee.

Taste is fairly nutty, with added notes of brown sugar, caramel, roasted chocolate and some dark fruits. Rich taste, a little on the sweet side but they pulled it off nicely.

Mouthfeel is very smooth and creamy. Full bodied with medium carbonation, a great brown ale that is easy to drink and would definitely purchase again.

Got around to trying the last of the variety pack

        Giddy Up
        ABV 6%

" A delicious juxtaposition of coffee, sustainably grown in Brazil and espresso-roasted locally, pressed into an ale with the deep color of a copper cowboy kettle. First whiff is full of sweet caramel, toffee, latte. Then, a hint of lemon scone flavor from the addition of lemon peel. Body is creamy, resoant of espresso, yet the finish is bright, even a bit frisky."

I wasn't impressed with this even though I expected it to be the winner of the 3 I never tried before.

It may have been a bad batch but it poored extremely flat with little to no head. Lacing reminded me of something that'd you see from a light beer, the taste follows that mold as well- watered down which took away the flavor (imo). It really reminds me of the 1554 but watered down, the carbonation is still there. Starts off creamy espresso (no real bite/bitter) and the lemon begins to show up.

Tonight I'm going to try it again but this time from the bottle instead of pouring it to see if my opinion changes.

        My prefered order, for now
        1) 1554
        2) Fat Tire
        3) Giddy Up
        4) Mothership Wit Organic

1554 has a really nice balance to me. Right off from the first sip you'll notice an earthy-type malt and a somewhat dry chocolate flavor that follows throughout the entire glass. At times I've noticed there's somewhat of a sweet/fruity hint in this ale but it doesnt take away from the chocolate imo. The finish is usually what makes or breaks a beer for me and this one passes. It finishes with a dry, crisp, and somewhat smoky chocolate but the bite isn't bad (slight bitterness).

Drinkability is good imo, not something you should just chug down but one isn't enough in the evening.

So, I'm looking for a beer recommendation. I'm 21 today and just tried a Guinness, absolutely hated it. Also tried a milk stout and hated that equally.

              Any recommendations?

If you are just starting with beer, I might suggest something a little lighter than that. Beer tastes pretty bad to most people at first, so usually a lager or a lighter ale is the way to go. I'm assuming you live in WI, and I'm not at all familiar with micros or locals from there, so I'll just suggest a few national brands.

Blue Moon is pretty universally popular. It's a wheat beer, usually served with a slice of orange in it (although it tastes just fine without). Made by Coors, so you can usually find it around.

For nationally-available lagers, I'm partial to Dos Equis myself. Quite refreshing, and more flavorful than most. Their amber is pretty good, too (comes in the brown bottle, as opposed to green for the lager).

Someone from WI might be able to give you more that are available easily in your area. I might also suggest finding a brewery with an alehouse, if there is one around. Most have samplers, and that's a good way to try a large variety quickly without getting completely plowed.

I would recommend revisting those after some period of time. Way back when when I had my first craft beer, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, I thought it was the most god awful thing I tasted. Same as my first oatmeal stout. For some reason I went back to them and they started growing on me. 12 years and hundreds of different beers later, it's now the Bud, Miller, Coors of the world I can't stand and now have an insatiable appetite for "extreme" beer.

As for starting out, I'm not sure where you live so options can vary. If I recall, Bass Pale Ale was kind of my entry beer into the wonderful world of good beer. Lots of liquor stores have "mix a six" packs which you can utilize to figure out your likes and dislikes. Go to a good bar and ask for some samples of stuff or explain to the bartender where you're coming from. You're not going to like every style, nobody does, so don't get frustrated that you didn't like a couple of stouts. I would say avoid really hoppy beers (stronger pale ales, IPAs) as that's a taste you have to get acclimated to (and subsequently addicted in my case). It's a journey for sure and your tastes will always change / grow.

Edit: Just saw EnglishHombre's post and it looks like I echo most of it!

I've been sticking with Newcastle Brown Ale lately.

I also have a six pack of Murphy's Irish Stout leftover from St. Patty's Day.

                    Both very good beers IMO.

Shiner Bock is now sold here and on tap at some bars. I had that for the first time 2 years ago at a trade show I was at in Dallas and loved it. It was a pleasant surprise to see it here now since I hadn't had it since then. Awesome beer.

Well, here's the recap. Friends took me out, I had a Harp in a bottle and a Leinenkugel Honey Weiss on tap. The Harp was decent and I really enjoyed the Honey Weiss. I also had some Anchor Steam thing which I had two sips of and did not like and a Pilsner something-or-other which smelled like skunk and was not good at all. Everyone else agreed on the skunk smell, they all wanted him to buy me a Blue Moon but he wouldnt. And then of course my birthday shot. Afterwards we went to a friend's place and I had a Jaeger bomp.

Pfunk, do you attend Bradley? I'm in Peoria so I could offer some suggestions on where to go for some good beer if you're interested.

Also if you smell skunk, the beer is likely bad and should be returned. Some Belgian beers and others have funky smells at times, but skuning in an Pilsner anything is bad news. That's one thing about craft beer that sucks; a lot of the breweries don't date their products and can sit on shelves for a long time. Especially the imported stuff.

I'm drinking some of the Murphy's Irish Draught tonight... So good... For those that have not had it, it's a dark beer that goes down smooth. It's similar to Guinness, but better IMO.
