If I have a kid that is flunking out of 9th grade, I'm pulling him out of school and telling him to either learn to play basketball, rap, play an instrument, act, or sell cocaine. That's it.

There is little, if any hope for someone too stupid to pass the 9th grade.

I won't be as blunt as Cebby, but yeah... if you are at the point where you need to use $200 to motivate your kid to pass the 9th grade, you probably went wrong somewhere previously along the line. He didn't need a 2.0 to graduate, he needed one to get through the first year of high school.

And what are you going to do to motivate him the next year? You have to continually up the ante to keep the carrot dangling on the stick.

Clearly, we have very different views on this.

I'm not a parent but I know my answer for this. No way I'd do that. I'd tell him that if he was going to keep doing that and waste my money if I sent him to a private school that he was going to pay his own tuition. Or tell him what his future is going to be like if he doesn't amp it up. There is no way that I'd pay him to do that. That's something that I would expect him to do automatically

          Very well said.

Some ambition to do something with your life should be enough motivation to get a freaking 2.0 in the 9th grade.

Instead of promising a reward of $200 for a 2.0, there should be enough motivation in the knowledge that if you don't get that 2.0, you are probably going to be flipping burgers for the rest of your life.

If I were you, I would just drop out of school and run away to join the circus.

That's exactly what my parents told me growing up. If your going to do bad in school your going to be working at macdonalds all your life. Needless to say I never got bad grades.

That is such crap, Going to college his little bearing how much money you will earn. If you do not go to college there are still ways to get a good job. It is all about learning a profession. I did not go to college and I was making $20+ an hour (before i got laid off). personally i am a big fan of military service over college, You learn a trade, make money, and most Importantly, you learn how to grow up.

I don't disagree with that at all; I'm not sure where you got that out of my post. College isn't for everyone, and I do think that too many people get steered towards college when maybe it isn't right for them.

That being said, just about everyone should be able to make it through high school with decent grades. Our friend GOL has some work to do on that front. You may not have gone to college, but there's a difference between that and struggling to reach a 2.0 in 9th grade.

Now I seen it all; thank you! I can now die. Like I said if the parents have the money and it is a way to motivate their kid to get a 2.0. I say go for it! And for the record school is hard for some. Maybe he has a learning disability. I know a lot of parents that use cash to get their kids to get good grades or to at least get a 2.0.

                      You are incorrect.

I believe education level is the factor with the most correlation to income.

If you go into the trade career you will probably make more than a college educated person. I know some trade people that make over $100,000 a year. Sure they work hard that is really the difference. I work hard at my job, but it is my brain that works hard, not my body.

It is not always true. That is for people that work at MacDonalds. A lot of non college people make just as much or more than college graduates.

I do too, but not $200 for a 2.0. Again, where are you going to go from there next time you need to offer motivation?

LMAO, how about find one that includes the trade careers with that stats. The bottom line is a lot of trades make more than college educated people. My dad made over $150,000 a year back in the 70's and he was in construction. He had no college degree. If you are not college material; you might want to look at the trades. I think if I wasn't a college educated man with a soon to be 2 Masters degrees. I would have been an electrician.
