    I've tried a few of the p90x, but plan to go the other route with insanity.. my roommates however have been doing p90x for a while now.

    Free weights would probably be the best bet and depending on your strength and fitness level right now, intervals of 5 and 10's lbs work out pretty well so you can change weights easily.
    I've found that the iron gym pull up bar works pretty efficiently as there are different hand positions, but there may be even something better out there now.

    It really is about the diet, cannot stress enough.. diet diet diet. My roommate was ultra thin when starting this and he really bulked up through eating a heck of a lot more throughout the day minus the bad foods, though he also started taking protein as well.

      Keep it simple and just pick up some free weights and either a chin up bar or some bands that has been discussed for resistance in place of the pull ups. I have the above plus the perfect pushups and can tell you that it is harder but easier on your wrists. My p90x is set it arrive this Friday (January 7th) as my daughter decided to take my original P90x to college

      I have Insanity but I like P90x as it is just an all around better program for sheding fat and adding muscle. Insanity is for serious cardio whereas P90x is alittle of everything.

        I have done p90x before and loved it but was wondering if anyone had done P90 (the fist version of the program)? My wife was thinking of doing it because the time needed isn't as long apparently. That was her only problem with p90x as you usually need an hour and half per day to get this done properly which my wife finds difficult with a young child + working nearly fulltime etc.

          I have P90 and I can highly recommend it for the wife. Very similar to kenpo and those types of work outs. 1 1/2 hours to get in a workout is too long in my opinion. She should consider just doing 30 minutes a day with more intensity and adjust from there for future sessions.

            cool thanks for the reply. So in the P90 it's more cardio / bodyweight exercise program as opposed to P90X that uses the free weights / pull ups etc?

              Correct and the workouts range about 35-40 minutes with warm up and cool down so your wife should be able to work it in better than P90x.

                  You're welcome. I have a suggestion that she might enjoy more when it comes to cardio:

                  Zumba

                  Not the kinect game but the actual dvds. It is dance that doesn't require anymore room than P90 or P90x. She will burn a ton of calories without noticing it as I have to admit is actually fun.

                  Ok now that I have put myself out on this I am now turning in my man card

                      Definitely! I am going to use it from time to time just to change things up. I was drenched in sweat just after the first workout. You spend so much time trying to learn the moves at first that you don't realize how much of workout that you get. The workouts are long so I probably shouldn't be recommending it for anyone who is short on time. However, I am sure they would still benefit even if they reduced it to 30 minutes per day.

                        That hilarious you mentioned that. I just ordered those dvd's from amazon as part of her b'day present on the 13th of Jan. My wife used to be a dancer growing up (tap, ballet etc) so i'm sure she'd love it and i've heard it is a great workout.

                          Bump.

                          I'm about to be all over this. I am currently 6'6" and weigh 255. My goal is to be 225-230 by my 30th birthday, which is June 1. I am playing in the biggest 3-on-3 basketball tournament in the world at the end of June, and want to be ready to go physically for it.

                          I've cleaned my diet up a lot over the past two weeks. I've been running and lifting, and I feel great but I want something more.

                          I've NEVER heard a bad word about P90x from people who finished the workout.

                          I am pretty excited, to say the least. I know it'll suck, but I also know that it will be worth it.

                          I don't plan on getting all the supplements, though. I'll get the whey and I'll attempt to follow the diet plan - I'll never eat bad, but I may not strictly follow their plan.

                          30 pounds lost and the changing up of my body composition in 3 months - shouldn't be that bad.

                              I'm about to finish phase 1, heading into the recovery week today. So far so good, I'm not in it to lose wight or anything, actually the opposite. I've been a twig my whole life, so I'm using this to get in shape and maybe gain a few pounds of muscle.

                                Make sure you are eating right. I did it for the same reason. I ate a lot of protein and for the last month had the recovery drink. There was a noticeable difference, but don't expect to be jacked by the end. I was considerably stronger though. My max bench went up 25 pounds and it was the most I've ever done after just one phase.
