I've tried a few of the p90x, but plan to go the other route with insanity.. my roommates however have been doing p90x for a while now.
Free weights would probably be the best bet and depending on your strength and fitness level right now, intervals of 5 and 10's lbs work out pretty well so you can change weights easily.
I've found that the iron gym pull up bar works pretty efficiently as there are different hand positions, but there may be even something better out there now.
It really is about the diet, cannot stress enough.. diet diet diet. My roommate was ultra thin when starting this and he really bulked up through eating a heck of a lot more throughout the day minus the bad foods, though he also started taking protein as well.
