What is the process for adopting a second dog? Not the actual adoption paperwork, but as far as making sure the potential new pet will get along with the existing pet? Is it as simple as just taking the dog along with you when you're looking at candidates or what?

That's what my parents did when they got their second dog. They took their dog with them and let the two dogs run around with each other for an hour or so to make sure they got along. What is the process for adopting a second dog? Re: OS Pups Thread!
That's a good idea but I honestly don't think its necessary. My belief is that you have to walk them together everyday so that they work together and they form that pack bond with you and they'll get along. What is the process for adopting a second dog? Re: OS Pups Thread!
Normally, you want to introduce the dogs in a neutral area like at a park or something. If you're adopting from a shelter, then I'm sure they can meet there since it is a neutral site. The only thing is Gemma may not be used to all of the dogs barking there and get anxious. Maybe there's an area outside with less noise where they can meet. You can call the shelter and see what the suggest. What is the process for adopting a second dog? The only time my wife and I did that introduced our dogs in a neutral area is when our original two dogs met when we first started dating. Other than that we've basically let them meet at our house even though that's not ideal. Frodo's "foster mom" brought him over and stayed for two hours to make sure they all got along.
Just be sure to watch over them and make sure that the new dog isn't food or toy aggressive. Look up info on what to do if the dogs eventually do get into it. I'm sure they won't but it's always good to be prepared. My 2K17 Boston Celtics MyLeague

Re: OS Pups Thread!
When we were getting our new puppy recently, my two older dogs were not happy about all the puppies running around. But once we did one-on-one introductions in a neutral backyard everything was fine. If you are worried about either dog, just make sure they are on a leash and take a walk with them even if it is in the backyard. Putting two dogs together for the first time with nothing to do but meet may be a problem, so give them a distraction like walking and keep the getting to know you sniffs short, like 3-5 seconds, before distracting them with something else. Putting a toy between two new dogs might not be the best idea either. What is the process for adopting a second dog? Re: OS Pups Thread!
Thanks for the input guys.
I'm looking for a specific breed so I don't think there would be many trips to stores/shelters. If there are we wouldn't take Gemma into the actual shelter. We don't need to trigger any deep-seeded memories for her.
I'm not worried at all about Gemma getting along with an additional pet apart from the initial jealousy of sharing us with something else. She is submissive of everything include house plants, but she loves to play with anything. We will watch the (future?) in-laws' Brittany Spaniel one weekend every month or so on average and they get along very well together.
Just something I started thinking about as I've always wanted a German Shepherd since we had one as kids.

Re: OS Pups Thread!
Some shelters have adoptable dogs online. If you want a German Shepard puppy it might be difficult to find, but if you don't mind a dog that's a few years old or even a senior dog, then I'm sure you kind find one. Thanks for the input guys.

You're in Virginia, right? I was planning on searching for you, but my work has most everything blocked these days. I did find a German Shepard Rescue site in Virginia, but I'm not sure where it is in relation to you. http://www.shepherdrescue.org/My 2K17 Boston Celtics MyLeague

Yup. Have that site bookmarked. My cousin is also a vet-tech around Richmond and she said she'd keep her eye open for when I'm/we're ready.

Here's Riley, my golden retriever. He just turned 1 year old in February, the pictures on the left side are from when he's a pup. He's a great dog and a great companion.Attached FilesOhio State Buckeyes | Carolina Panthers | Charlotte Hornets | Cincinnati RedsComment

We got a Great Pyrenees mix last July. He will be one on April 27. His name is Eddie and he is a goofball. Love this guy. The first photo is the day I picked him up. He was just over 12 weeks then.

Re: OS Pups Thread!
What are the odds he bounces his cage over the curtains while you are gone and has a field day. He has the same look on his face that my black lab did right before he pulled off the greatest magic trick of all time. While we were gone he bounced the cage over to the curtains and dragged those through the cage holes. Then bounced over to the bed and did the same with a comforter and then the same with a pai of dress pants I had draped over a chair all before bouncing his cage back to the original spot. I got home and the cage was full of shredded fabric and he laid in the middle of it in all his glory. Do you now how hard it would be to pull a comforter through the cage bars?Chalepa Ta Kala.....Comment

Re: OS Pups Thread!
We actually moved the cage upstairs. He hasn't "bounced" it yet. I could see him trying though. He is totally capable of doing that. And, yes, he destroyed that rug in the photo, too. What are the odds he bounces his cage over the curtains while you are gone and has a field day. Re: OS Pups Thread!
Our family dog ended up passing away about a month ago now, but we're beginning to look into buying a new puppy and I was wondering what kind of advice you guys have.
We really love the two schnoodles that we've owned, so we'd love another schnoodle, but we've also been looking into morkies/yorktese puppies. I live in Rochester NY, but we'd be willing to drive to Ohio, PA, other parts of NY, etc. to pick up a new puppy.
We came across at least one puppy that we liked, but after looking into the owners, it looks like it's one of those Amish puppy mills and that kinda scared us off.
Edit: I think we just struck gold
About to head down to check this puppy out.
