Re: The first time you dunked

I've given up. I'm 5'9 185 with short arms and small hands. I can get the rim, I can almost dunk, I've thrown a couple off the back rim, but I don't think I'll ever be able to flush one. I also can't jump off one foot to save my life. Off two feet I can get the rim flat footed, if I run and jump off one foot I don't think I can even touch it. :/

Have you tried flushing off a self bounce lob? If you time it correctly and toss a good ball, that can often provide one of the best opportunities to throw one down. It takes away the havoc that rising with a ball can often create for the little fellas.

I've only dunked once in my life which was during Freshman basketball practice during a full court layup drill where I had perfect momentum and timed it just right with my left hand. As much as I tried I was never able to do it again on a 10' hoop

Yea, it's always hard for me to get the bounce right. And the few times that I have I throw it off the back of the rim.

I could 1 hand running jam with really no problem but I couldn't tomahawk it or do a two handed jam, but freshman year college in the intramural league I went up for a rebound while running from the baseline and I just kept rising like I got a boost in the air, I grabbed it with 2 hands about 2 feet away from the rim and threw it down. I actually semi-blacked out when I did it, I had ahold of the rim and I almost went paralell to the ground. I got T-upped for it for grabbing the rim, but I honestly wasn't even going to try to dunk it.

The looks on everyone's face was priceless.

Seems like you weren't aware of what you can do.

You see, my situation is the complete opposite. In my head I can dunk pretty well. In reality, I lost all the athleticism I used to have and can't jump anymore.

10th grade first time. i tore my acl in 9th and don't know what happened, guess the rehab exercises from the injury just strengthened stuff in my legs? anyway, after that it was over. i threw down all the time. not really on people, can't palm the ball but on a break or something i could easily toss it to myself off the glass. too bad that was a long time ago!

Might sound ridiculous, but if you're consistantly throwing it off the back of the rim when you get the bounce right, perhaps you should try taking off from a little further away. Every now and again I go through a spurt where the same thing happens to me, it seems like a lot of my dunks are hitting back iron. It's usually a result of taking off from too close. You kind of have to believe you can fly. That you can. . .touch the sky.

You're not going to get one from me. At 5'8" my version of a dunk is a fundamentally sound layup.

Can't dunk, if I were any shorter my feet wouldn't even reach the ground.

Only dunked once in my life. It was the time I posted about it in the beginning of this thread.

Ever since my heel injury of about five years ago, I haven't even been able to work out much less get off my feet. It's embarrassing and frustrating.

The first time I "dunked" was 8th grade.
I was a 5'7 guard and I leaked out after a missed free throw and kinda layed it in while grabbing the rim afterwards lol.

But now I'm 6'1 and have arms like Rondo. I'm actually almost able to do standing dunks but the ball usually slips.
I don't wanna be Jordan, I don't wanna be Bird or Isiah, I don't wanna be any of those guys.
I want to look in the mirror and say I did it my way.
