I'm the same way, which is exactly why I made a conscious choice to stop drinking alcohol when I was 20-21 years old. The combination of seeing how my father was and how my personality was to do everything to the extreme simply shaped my decision to stop. 23 years and counting!

Couldn't have any stimulant for the next week. Try cutting out cocaine, nicotine (dipped 1.5 cans Copenhagen a day), and coca cola (drank 6 to 10 cokes a day, literally) all at once. It was a tough week. Thankfully, I asked Christ into my heart that day, was able to get through it, and I haven't looked back since. That was 17 years ago.
      That's right!

This one means more to me because His word is my true treasure here on earth, and it's something I'll always have with me regardless,of what the world brings against me, the challenges I face, or all the times I fail.

It's funny because I'm old now and I've turned huge computer geek. Used to have long hair (down to middle of back) and party with a very rough crowd (hung out at a low rent biker bar). When I tell people, they don't believe me, because I don't cuss or engage in crude conversation and they don't see how it's possible. Their eyes usually get pretty wide though when we start swapping stories from years gone by. Shows what God can do in a life. Truly transform it.
That is right too! I have friends that were heavy in to the gang life and now are not that person anymore! What change them? I think we know, but I don't want to break any TOS.

They say there is a alcoholic gene or it could be an addiction gene. I can't remember which one. They say some have an addicting personality. Meaning they tend to get addicted to things more than others.

My Elementary school principal used to tell me to make good decisions, I thought it was corny but oh how true it is.

Stick to the drugs that cant kill you, OD'ing is a crappy way to go out.

                My three things are

                1. Meeting my future wife when I was 19

                2. My father dying of Cancer when I was 27

                3. My son being born when I as 31

Each one changed my life in different ways, all for the better.

My wife obviously put my life in a great position that I'm still thankful about every morning I wake up next to her.

My father passing gave me more awareness to Cancer and it's affect on people. Have done many charity events since in helping raise money for research, without ever forgetting my father.

My son taught me what life is really about. The joy he brings to me every day I come home from work is like nothing else in this world.

Re: The moment that changed your life forever

of course becoming a husband and father, but the biggest was my mother dying. she did 4 months after we got married the same week she found out she was going to be a grandmother.
She was my best friend and to lose her is very hard to take. that was 8 years ago.

Last time I saw her the day after thanksgiving. she died December 2. I lived five hours away from home by time i got on the road she died. There was nothing i could do about or save her. I didn't even get a chance to say goodbye. Its still hard nowadays. But God works in mysterious ways my oldest daughter is a splitting image of my mother down to her attitude. I was able to move on because of her death and do things i don't know i wouldve done.

That is really heavy. Thanks for sharing. I lost my little cousin to cancer she was 12. That was tough watching her die a little bit more each day. I was there when she died. She told me she was ready to die and to me to be there for her mom and grandma. And then she died!

I agree my oldest son is going to turn 8 and while that is not 14 he got older fast. It feels just like yesterday we brought him home for the Hospital. My 1 year is getting old too.

I'm only twenty, so I haven't had any kids yet to change my life and I have been lucky to not endure deaths of close loved ones, but I would say that when my ex of two and half years played me changed my life.

I did everything for that chick, even payed for her summer semester at the University of Jacksonville (A private university, mind you, so you know that crap's pricey). After I found out she was talkin'/kissin' on some dude while we were getting shaky (but still together), I cried for days... But I learned to be stronger and wiser when it comes to women. I learned to be more independent and that in the end, family and friends will always help you through things.

Re: The moment that changed your life forever

The day I was caught cheating on my girl with my best friend's girl in my second year of college.

Not only have I completely turned my life around since that day by admitting a drinking and gaming addiction, but I also turned my school life, my social life and health around.

It was the first time I ever took responsibility for my actions and probably my first time I was ever in trouble as an adult.

Now I am only 21, so while I have had people die in my life, it's weird that something maybe so trivial changed my life forever. Odd how that works, but it really, really did it for me.
